Redcafe Snooker

Saw the first frame and a bit of Selby's match and he looks in good form. Confident with a business head determination. I might put a fiver on him for the Championship.
He seems like a nice guy but I really don't enjoy watching him. I hope he doesn't bore his way to another victory.

This 17-year old kid Yan is putting up one hell of a fight against Murphy.

No way he looks 17 either!

Ronnie rates him extremely highly. Said he will win a half dozen world championships. Complete package. Next generation's phenomenon.

Tbh, even if he ends up losing this match, I've been massively impressed. Only just turned 17.

EDIT: Murphy just got an outrageous fluke that could see him nick it.

Ironic, pretty sure it was Murphy he got a huge fluke against earlier this year.

So harsh. Came back from 9-5 to 9-8 and looked set to level before that massive fluke.
He's defo one to watch out for though.

There's talk of a massive Chinese influx over the coming years. I'm sure this will be the death of snooker as we know it here in the U.K. It will become as popular as table tennis and lack any interest.

I'm not sure keeping it a white, predominantly British sport really broadens its appeal tbh.

Brecel is pathetic. Fu after being down 2-7, and playing like shit yesterday, got to 8-8 tonight, with Brecel doing his best impression of crap amateur player. Funny how promising he was, yet he's already 22, and with little to show off with.

I've said it before in this thread, but I actually love low-quality snooker games. Scrappy ones where there are safety battles and missed pots, I find them so much more entertaining than games where the players are clearing up.

Really hoping Fu wins this frame, I want to see another.

I agree with you

Just watching some highlights the last few nights, Murphy looking classy as always, a few new players looking good too.

I see Ronnie is being as big a bellend as always though.

Awesome comeback from Fu last night, what a performance. And fair play to Brecel for not losing his rag after the ref declared a push shot. Been some really good contests already, and great to see some new names providing stern competition to the established crop.

Everyone always defends Ronnie, I honestly think he could walk in to the living room of most snooker fans and take a dump on the Sunday roast and they would still worship him. I don't understand why he can't do what he does on the table but without the controversy off it.
He seems to think he can play by whatever rules he likes just because he's 'box office'. Snooker was around before Ronnie and it will be around after him, I'm glad Barry Hearn has stood up to him.

Really. So if the last 16 has 16 Chinese players in it you're going to watch it with the same level of interest? I won't be.

Why wouldn't you? Chinese players tend to be more attacking, and nationality means bugger all when it comes to individual sports for me. I'm not rooting for the UK to win the Snooker, F1, Tennis, or Ping Pong - I'm rooting for individuals based on who appeals the most.

While he doesn't use the nicest words, that doesn't mean he could be right. The interest in table tennis dropped dramatically in Germany when everything started to go to the Chinese. For niche sports, you need local heroes to keep it alive in your country.

Those are tactical frames, not low quality. And yeah, they can be immensely captivating.

Judd Trump seems to have an injury he's wincing evey time he's taking a shot, he is also losing 7-6

What's wrong with a bit of eccentricity? It's precisely that attitude which makes him a fan favourite. He had a problem with the photographer and referee not stopping him.

You'd seriously describe Ronnie as 'eccentric'?! Dominic Dale is eccentric! Ronnie is, let's say 'petulant'. And he may be a fan favourite but I can tell you a lot of snooker fans have nothing like the time for him that they had in the past, people get bored of it.

Describes me perfectly. Every other event is "Ronnie has problem with World Snooker" & after so many years I'm just tired of it.

I see no reason to get worked up about this. So what if he's petulant? He's still the best entertainer in the sport. It's not like petulant sportsmen are a rarity. I for one like a good drama and Ronnie never disappoints.

I also don't see what's so bad about it. He's a bit of a man child at times in interviews but is that really so much of a distraction? Instead of constantly bringing it up in every single conversation about him, can't we just concentrate on the actual snooker?

Rory McLeod dispatches of top favourite (by some weirdos) Judd Trump. Kudos for that, but feck off with refusing to shake female ref's hand.

Pleased for him. Always liked McLeod. Battles hard, despite not being the most 'gifted'. Hope he can go a bit further.

He was ok against Trump, but Trump was much more the reason for the scoreline. I don't give him much chances against Maguire. Oh, and already tomorrow at evening Murphy and O'Sullivan start, nice.

He has Maguire in the next round? Ouch!

Yep, and Maguire left a very good impression. Here are all the second round matches, and starts of their first sessions...

Thursday 1pm Bingham - Wilson
Thursday 7pm Murphy - O'Sullivan

Friday 10am Liang - Ding
Friday 2:30pm Allen - Higgins

Saturday 2:30pm Maguire - McLeod
Saturday 7pm Selby - Guodong

Sunday 10am Robertson - Fu
Sunday 10am Hawkins/Ford - Dott

Robbo leads 8-1 in first round, Hawkins is up 5-2 against Ford.

Saw bits and pieces of Trump and McLeod. McLeod was poor at times but got that little bit of luck that you need, fair play to him. Trump had a few beautiful reds in the second last frame.

This time tomorrow I will be in Sheffield enjoying a pre-snooker breakfast (and maybe a cheeky Guinness :)). Got tickets with a few workmates for Liang vs. Ding at 10am.
I think I've heard something about the McLeod/ female ref thing before, seems very odd. Trump could be destined to become the next Jimmy White - left handed, fans favourite, attacking player but always just short at the Crucible. It must be playing on his mind that it's another year gone, and with all the Chinese players becoming so good at such young ages, he will quickly start to run out of chances. Seems crazy it's 6 years since he played in the final there.

Murphy vs. O'Sullivan should be a cracker of a second round match, especially now Murphy has spoken out against Ronnie's recent comments, both will be well up for it.
The top half of the draw in general is throwing up some good matches but the bottom half is wide open now, with Trump out and Bingham & Higgins on a collision course in the semi-finals, I think Barry Hawkins will be fancying his chances of another final, although he will need to improve on his performance last night where he was simply the least bad player against Ford.
