Redcafe Snooker

It's fecking weird seeing that Maguire is 36 years old. When I was a nipper playing snooker, around 14 or 15, I remember watching him and hearing he was the next big thing so started to follow him a bit. Now he's older than the players I used to consider old back then like McManus, Doherty and Parrot. I'm glad I'm not playing competitively any more, I used to love being the whizzkid that the older heads didn't know how to play against, full of confidence and all that. Now I'd be one of the older players with a head full of reservations and previously missed shots while some 15 year old knocks in back to back 30 breaks and dispatches of me with ease :(

This time tomorrow I will be in Sheffield enjoying a pre-snooker breakfast (and maybe a cheeky Guinness :)). Got tickets with a few workmates for Liang vs. Ding at 10am.
I'd be interested in hearing how that goes! I've always fancied seeing a live snooker match, having watched it on TV for so many years, but I have never been so do let us know if you think it is worth it. Can you actually see a lot from the seats, and what's it like as a general day out at the Crucible?

Fair play to Rory last night, massive scalp and he worked so hard to get across the line. At one point he seemed to pot a dozen or so difficult balls only to piece together a break of 20-odd, it was seriously hard work. Trump is clearly the more talented but wasn't at the races - surprised he was a favourite for the tournament, he will need to make huge strides mentally if he is to win a World Championship.

Agree with many of the above posters about O'Sullivan. Massively talented but I too am getting bored of his antics, though his importance has lessened because we currently have a fantastic collection of players and some good characters. Hawkins looked to be in fine form yesterday evening, as does Robertson, and I'd never seen Xiao play before and he looked very good too.

Shaping up to be an excellent championship.

Can't wait for tonight. Prediction is Murphy to go 4-0 in the lead then Ronnie to bash him over the head with his cue, offering both middle fingers to the Man and storming off.

That'll teach Murphy to play mind games with a psycho. :)

This will be the fifth year in a row we've been - so far we've seen Robertson vs. Milkins (2013), Trump vs. Ford (2014), Selby vs. McGill (2015) and Williams vs. Holt (2016).
I also went a couple of times in the 90s with my dad, think we saw Willie Thorne amongst others. The atmosphere is definitely as good as the commentators make out. There's still a buzz even after all these visits when you walk through the door and down to your seat, the tables look so immaculate. It's nice to sit and enjoy the snooker without commentary although I know a lot of people have these silly ear pieces! It's good value for money too, we've paid £28 and are seeing 2 top players play 8 frames at the home of snooker, I think that's good. Plus we've not seen either Liang or Ding before so that makes it better. The view from anywhere in the arena is good but try and get as close as possible, from the front 3/4 rows it feels like you could reach out and pick the balls up. Sheffield is also very good for drinking so try and go at the weekend and make a day of it!

Sounds awesome! Hope it's a good session for you.

I really enjoy watching snooker but they are massively lacking in people with personality. Other than Ronnie, the others are just so dull.

They seriously need to find a young guy with personality to lift the sport

What does this *personality* mean exactly? I mean, I don't watch interviews with players, only matches, and I don't find much lacking when the play is good.

Does sound rather good. Definitely something I will look into in the future. :)

Yea mostly for interviews and commentary. They need someone who can bring in the mainstream audience by being funny, obnoxious, cocky... Anything really

At the moment listening to the likes of Ebdon, Davis, Virgo is tiresome. They don't really have a huge personality in the sport other than Ronnie

Agree on Ebdon, not so much Davis, and not at all Virgo. Virgo is pretty lively in the commentary box as far as snooker goes.

Yea I think Virgo annoys me with the "where's the cue ball going?" Everytime it's within 3 inches of the pocket.

Also the number of times they have mentioned Parrott being the best cushion player ever ..... So dull

I couldn't do that on a video game :D

Can someone explain why it comes off the cushion in that direction?

He's hit the ball on the right side, so it's spinning counter-clockwise very fast. When it hits the bottom cushion, the spin on the ball causes friction, and the ball bounces with the spin.

Just like spinning a tennish ball with high revs against a wall.

Some shot from Wilson just there, off almost every cushion for perfect position...might be highlights though.

I'm definitely a fair weather watcher of snooker, and whilst I find safety play utterly tedious I somehow find it enthralling and impressive at the same time. It's a bizarre mix of feelings.

Really hope Murphy can stage a comeback here.

Shaping up to be a cracking weekend of snooker.

Screw Murphy. He's a sanctimonious sack of shit. I'm sure I've made my feelings known about him multiple times in this thread. Porcine wanker.

Why do you dislike him so much?

I find him boring as sin, but not sure why he's so hateable for you?

I'll take sanctimonious over precious, egotistical and paranoid thanks.

Murphy seems like a class lad. If you found yourself in a snooker club with any of the top 16, he seems like he'd be the first one to offer to help you out if you asked. Even has a YouTube channel where he posts tips n tricks.

Didn't like him much when he first came onto the scene, but that was mostly because of all the god loving shite. Now? He's pretty cool.

I also remember when all the players like Selby/Hendry/Ronnie were complaining about Hearn's new tour list, saying how they're fatigued & whatnot. Shaun Murphy said something like: "What a load of absolute rubbish. We get to travel the world, stay in nice hotels, and play the sport we love for a living. We're lucky to be here!" Gained a lot of respect for him after that.

Don't mind Murphy, just a boring guy with a bit of dignity. Glad Ronnie beat him though.

Also not keen on Murphy, tries to come across as Mr nice but clearly isn't.

Sure she cheated on his ex Mrs with a new bird even though he is part of the god squad.

Then when Maguire forgot his chalk and he got him docked a frame was a bit shit.

Also he just seems to have strange opinions and won't disagree with the higher powers of snooker much. He's like a puppet to them.

Let's see if he can muster some strength to comeback from 10-9 down.

Best of 5 frames now. Don't really mind who wins, but Liang vs Ronnie would be crazy.
