Redcafe Snooker

Has anyone been following the Welsh Open on Eurosport? Absolute carnage for the seeds. Only 3 of the 16 seeds made it through to the last 16, it's QF day today and Trump plays Hawkins so that's another one heading home!

Draw:

Scott Donaldson vs. Zhou Yuelong (first ranking event QF for both!)
Judd Trump vs. Barry Hawkins
Stuart Bingham vs. Stuart Carrington
Robert Milkins vs. Kurt Maflin

Anyone watching the shootout on ITV4? It's a bit shit if you're a snooker purist but for a one off event it's quite fun

Ye Im watching - its actually great TV!

Just turned over to it and wish I hadn't  it's worse than my old snooker club on a Friday night. Atmosphere and standard

Keep watching - its hit and miss but some frames are great

There was a great match where Jimmy White won by 1 point earlier - quality stuff!

I didn't realise until now that as of this year, it's a ranking event. Bit ridiculous that. It's fun but not does really have any resemblance to actual snooker. Think its why only 3 of the top 16 have entered it this year.

I watched some guy who was 28-25 up with 5 seconds left put the white in like it was intentional & lost 28-29 :D Shite stuff, honestly.

Edit: Found it on YouTube.

That's hilarious

Couldn't believe it when it happened  I don't play snooker often (play a lot of pool as we've a table), and my highest break is only in the 30s, but I can say I'd play that shot 100 times and the white would never go in.

Ronnie's newest interview, one word answers, interviewed clearly has no idea what to do, then Ronnie ends up breaking into song

Best of 19 until the second round proper at the Crucible, cuts down on upsets and makes it a real test for the players.
Great result for Reanne Evans (11 times Ladies World Champion) last night, she beat Robin Hull 10-8 and is 2 wins away from being the first female to play at the Crucible. What an incredible sporting achievement that would be.
Most of the other usual suspects are either winning or are already through, look out for Peter Ebdon and Jimmy White who are on a collision course in Q/R2 if they both win, and in the same section of the draw as Michael Holt.

Pretty sure she was one win away last year & lost to Ken Doherty. Would be amazed if she made it through this time.

Draw for the final round of Qualifying, the winner of each match makes it to the Crucible and will be drawn against one of the 16 seeds later this week (World Championship starts on Saturday). Some interesting matches in there, although not a huge amount of potential Crucible debutants (Bingtao vs. Ursenbacher will produce one).

Mark King v Xiao Guodong
Akani Songsermsawad v David Grace
Luca Brecel v Dominic Dale

Gary Wilson v Michael White
Michael Holt v Peter Ebdon
Rod Lawler v Jimmy Robertson
Yan Bingtao v Alexander Ursenbacher
Yu De Lu v Martin Gould
Mark Williams v Stuart Carrington
Tom Ford v Hossein Vafaei
Lee Walker v Noppon Saengkham
Li Hang v Stephen Maguire
Ben Woollaston v Zhou Yuelong
Jamie Jones v Graeme Dott
Fergal O'Brien v David Gilbert
Rory McLeod v Hammad Miah

The amount of concentration you need to play snooker is crazy, the highest break I've gotten is about 30ish, I tend to drink whilst playing so I never line up the shot how I should, and that creates a ripple effect into how I get down on to the shot and then I rush back up after delivering the cue.

To be able to play the amount of snooker they do and maintain their concentration and routine is admirable, I should try not drinking when I play but it's the only time I get to!

Agreed - I think in terms of the concentration required on a consistent basis, not just every now and again like in a lot of sports, snooker players have to be admired in that respect.
It's such a difficult sport but I think the strength in depth is very good these days. Looking at some of the names that could be heading to the Crucible, the seeds will not have it easy by any means. Mark Williams is 3-6 down after the first session of his final Qualifier, but if he makes it one of the seeds will be coming up against a former multiple World Champion in the first round.

Yeah the players are getting much better, with all these different tournaments I don't think we'll see another player do what Hendry did during his pomp, I hope Trump is able to successfully replace Ronnie as the mercurial talent that is everyone's target to aspire/beat.

On another topic, as I've not really kept up with snooker lately, and idea how Neil Robertson is getting in lately? Seems he went through a period of being unplayable to dross, heard during commentary on one of the recent tournaments that he admitted to just spending time playing on the PlayStation instead of practice!

Amazing how complacency sets in once you've hit the top.

Robertson has been frustratingly inconsistent since his World Championship win in 2010. Having said that, he has completed the Triple Crown of World & UK Championships plus the Masters.
On his day, he has the talent to win another one at the Crucible but it's a 2 week tournament and I just can't see it. He's been knocked out in the first round 3 times in the last 6 years and only got to the one table setup on 3 occasions.

@Mrs Smoker I agree, the coverage yesterday was great and there were some exciting matches. It's good that World Snooker are making the Qualifiers more accessable than they've been in the past.

I'm going to Sheffield with a few workmates on Friday 21st and as far as I can see looking at the schedule we will see the winner of the Ding and Liang matches, whoever they might draw - first round draw is 10am this morning.

@ChrisNelson yeah he's so good when he puts his mind to it but it's the complacency that has ruining him I feel, if that story of him just playing PlayStation instead of putting the hours on the table are accurate then I don't think he'll ever be remembered as one of the best sadly.

For all the criticism Selby gets for being "boring" he has to be commended on his work ethic and willingness to put the hours in to stay at the top of his game for so long!

Last night was epic. Fergal averaged around a minute per shot, yet I wouldn't go to sleep, it was quite captivating. Record broken for longest frame, 2 hours and 3 some minutes, drama, some controversy too...excellent. Of course, wouldn't want those happening every now and then.

Draw is done.

Fergal goes first against the world champion, Selby. Ding has a compatriot as a first hurdle, Yuelong. Trump got McLeod, while Ronnie in my opinion got a very tricky opponent, Gary Wilson. Wilson was most impressive qualifier, had most century breaks and also had a 147.

Snooker would get a surge in popularity if they did this for other tournaments as well, especially with flat draw and 100+ players at the venues. I think one Chinese tournament actually had all the tables streamed, but guess that's too high tech for Europe.

:lol:Just read about that frame. Sounds like a real endurance test.

Anyone but Trump to win please.

He is a massive bellend. Just read some interview with him on BBC and here is a quote...

"The public are seeing something from me which they have not seen before, and think I can win it.

What is he trying to say there? So peak Hendry and O'Sullivan weren't as good as Trump currently is? if he just means the public have never seen such a massive twat in snooker before then yeah, he's probably right.

Also in the interview he says he is using being favourite as an advantage. He has never struck me as the most confident player, especially when he is up against one of the top players, looks like a rabbit in the headlights half the time. Can't wait till he retires.

I'm really not fond of him either. Would easily prefer the other 31 players to win it over him.

He's pretty good player though, and unlike Murphy for instance, he upped his tactical play enormously. Mark Allen too, seeing their safety play recently, and it looks quite good. Against Murphy, or Maguire too, I'd play even if I need 10 snookers. They still suck at tactical frames.

50 minutes until the event of the year.

He's saying they are seeing something from him which he hasn't shown them before. There's nothing arrogant about that. Like a lot of players he knows what he is capable of and translating it to tournaments it's always difficult but now he feels he is showing what he knows he can do and the public are seeing it so perhaps are starting to think he can win things.

I don't think he's saying he's taking snooker to a new level or doing anything revolutionary. It's probably the context you found because you think he's an arrogant twat. Personally, I think he's a bit cocky and exuberant rather than arrogant.

Funny thing about seeds in first round, they do get the money, but it doesn't count in the rankings. Hearn said it was because they didn't have to qualify - some *reward* of sorts for qualifiers after three long rounds.

Both Selby and Maguire (Mags after msi) dominant. 10-0 in Selby match might be worth a punt.

Saw the first frame and a bit of Selby's match and he looks in good form. Confident with a business head determination. I might put a fiver on him for the Championship.
