Redcafe Snooker

When you call yourself the Jester people tend to expect something a little more than a dour face and slow frame rate. But I do like Selby, for what it's worth.

I'd like to see Murphy win it now. He used to grate on me but the quality of his ball striking is too good to ignore.

Disappointed to see both Robertson and Ronnie bow out. Probably my two favourite players on the circuit.

That nickname was given to him, not that he doesn't like it! I think he is ok myself.

I wanted a Robertson v O'Sullivan final when the draw first came out as I think they are the 2 best players.

@johnny boy Definitely. He seems one of the most active when it comes to interacting with the crowd.
Another thing I really like about Selby is how grateful he is to be a professional snooker player. Ronnie and Judd Trump for example have been outspoken about there not being enough money in snooker. Selby on the other hand has said numerous times he thinks he is lucky to be earning the amount he does doing something he loves. Don't get me wrong I love Ronnie but he sometimes comes across as ungrateful.

That and the fact I enjoy Selby's style of snooker is why he's one of my favourite to watch.

I agree completely.

The tag boring is often labelled at people who are winners, hence the Davis and Hendry reference earlier.
Not all players have O'Sullivan's genius and natural flair, they are in their own zone of concentration.

To me having watched Selby quite a lot, the way he has a laugh with the audience I think his just the way he relieves the tension.
No way is he boring.

SKY TV did a good documentary on him recently, it was really good.

God I fecking hate Murphy. Absolute weapon.

Hate is a pretty strong word for someone you have never met.
Lots of people I can't stand, say on TV, but if I met them they may not be so bad.

Why do you hate him?

Pompous arrogant prick. I've heard it directly from a current pro (not one of the top names but one that has played in a World Championship semi and has been on the circuit for years) that he is not a popular chap at all amongst his peers and is every bit as full of himself as he comes across on TV.

....and supports Manchester United.

To be fair to him he does a lot for Manchester Children's Hospital and I read somewhere he donates regularly to them.

I couldn't hate someone who did that personally.

Ah right, never knew that. Always thought he was decent enough as a person as well.

Interested in who the pro is. I have an idea based on your description, but won't say in case you don't want them named.

He probably is. The guy does quite a lot for children's charities - my lad is severely autistic - so I can appreciate that.

To be fair a lot of sportsmen and women do.

The word "hate" is just used freely too often.

I sometimes work on a bar at a venue in Preston and we had one of the tournaments about 13 months ago, and I asked to work in the players lounge for the whole week which had big screens of all the matches and also 2 practice tables, it was crazy for me, a snooker fan, nobody else on the bar staff cared. I'd watch O'Sullivan and the others practicing for hours whilst I grabbed them a coffee! I was having my breaks sitting with terry griffiths and Mark Williams etc.

I noticed very quickly how there was a group of players that were all jack the lads having a laugh and going off to places like Nandos together and practicing together. They were Williams, Perry, Mark Davis, Matthew Stevens, and, Bingham and Ryan Day. Then you had people turn up like Higgins who seemed to get on with them all but stayed with his little entourage. O'Sullivan literally turned up, practised for 30 minutes, played his matches and left.

Sorry Ive completely gonee off on a tangent so back to my point of quoting you, I noticed that Murphy turned up and didn't speak to anyone, looked miserable the whole time, sat on his own, didn't really practice and I don't understand why. He's massively underachieved since winning back in 2005 or whenever it was, and I just think that you've to earn that sort of attitude, for example I didn't have a problem with Ronnie strutting around one bit.

The funniest one was Nigel Bond, probably about 45-50 years old, and he was there with his parents the whole time. Just Nigel and Mum and Dad, I don't think he has any friends.

Another funny story from that week, I had the refs come up to me in the bar asking where's good to go out round Preston, me and my mate said "oh get to Yates' at the top of the street", and they said, cool we will do, want to come? The tabs on World Snooker. So me and my mate finished our shift, met them outside and we went to Yates getting smashed with all the refs all night, the main one of the lot is Brendan Moore - proper yorkshireman, such a good laugh that night. He reffed the final the next day, he looked well rough.

Blimey that should have been Hawkins 0 Murphy 4. Instead it's 1-3.
Murphy pots black and goes in off.

He comes across well on TV.

Guess, good for him then!

Unlike some of you guys, I like all of Roberston, Selby, Trump and Murphy.

Ronnie, however, I cannot stand. Glad he's out.

I like Robertson and Selby. Trump's a bit arrogant but it's not always a bad thing and the less said about Murphy the better.

Well, back to the actual snooker itself Murphy in good position at 6-2.

Didn't realise they were still having morning sessions, can't watch any today till I get home later.

Disappointed in Hawkins after he had such a great match with Robertson. Murphy's looking excellent though, struggling to see past him for the tournament.

Quite like Bingham actually, seems like a decent guy. Obviously humbled to have gotten to this stage as well which is good to see.

Everyone who has watch snooker for more than two minutes knows Murphy is a tosser, just listen to how he speaks for a start! He said himself recently he's said some bad things about others and is trying to get away from that, putting it down to his younger years, now he's matured but I think this is just a mask, like a Nigel Pearson acting away like a Cameron or Miliband.

Fatty Murphy did a piece on BBC where he talked about having home schooling because of severe bulling at school yet despite this he chose to hammer O'Sullivan on tv for not doing his 'responsibilities' of tv interviews, with everyone knowing he suffered from depression etc, even going into clinics and so on. The guy is a grade A WAN*** and even when he tries to speak nicely he's dull. Ronnie, Trump, Selby even Wobbo are all better than him. You'd think someone who went through some trouble like Murphy did would be sympathetic to others woes, but no. He's fat anway, should stop eating or boozing.

Can I get an AMEN sista?!!

Just great breakbuilding from Hawkins (and just now Murphy). 103-57-104-73 from Barry, 90 from Shaun.

But seems we will get another session tomorrow after all.

Or not. 5th century for the match for Murphy, and just one frame away of final. 16-7.

That's 11th century break for Murphy, I believe the Crucible record is 16 by Hendry. Could be in jeopardy.

EDIT: 16-8 at the end of the day. Another fine break from Hawk. Can he go 9-0 tomorrow? :)

Should've been at least four frame advantage for Bingham, maybe even 6, but didn't happen...

Still, third session where he didn't lose, another 4-4 would be great.

Hreat escape from Bingham.

EDIT: Not so good on the yellow though...

Barry gets the first of this afternoon's session with another amazing century clearance and he's in again in the next frame... come on the Hawk!

Fecksake, two shots after I wrote that, he lost position on the black and missed a difficult one off the spot. Murphy left with the balls in good places.

Brilliant Snooker from both. Wouldn't mind either of these handing Murphy's ass to him.
