Gaming Red Dead Redemption 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Stadia)

We aren't talking twitch shooting here, this isn't an fps so people need to stop making comparisons to games that aren't even close to being the same.

But what's the point in over complicating things? Why, for an example, would you have R2 to draw a weapon, L2 to then aim, R2 to fire...but wait, if you hold R2 just slightly and it fires anyway. There are just bad choices, the whole "realism" argument doesn't account for those, especially small things like the reload button being opposite side to all other games. The camera too, it's poorly accelerated and first person mode has the wrong fov and acts more like an early N64 Z-button game.

I love exploration games and this hits the spot, but when the weakest part of a game that heavily relies on combat is the actual combat side, you can kind of see why people feel more polish is needed. I mean even the crime system seems like an even more dumb version of Skyrim's a hell of a lot. Even the menu system is poorly designed, holding numerous buttons whilst flicking through things is just way to outdated.

Having a character sway and have a bit of weight about him in a game like this is excellent, and exactly what I want. Poor controls holding back aspects that are basic enough as it is (i.e the combat) just kind of ruin that side of it. For me anyway.

Oh, how did I forget about the menu system. You need to use the "claw" technique at times just to equip shit.

The menu system sometimes leaves me holding buttons I don't even need to hold just to try and get around it's awkwardness.

Why didn't they make tapping LT draw your gun, holding it aims your gun and holding up on the d-pad or b or something puts it away again? Then they could free LB up to highlight people for interaction. That's probably not even the simplest or best solution, but to me it feels like it would improve on what's currently happening. At times it feels like trying to play a Metal Gear game with its needlessly convoluted controls.

I like it overall, but times it just feels like it's wearing me down. I don't want to pay bounties because I know story missions will just slap huge bounties back on me so it feels like a waste of time, but then I get constant hassle from bounty hunters when I'm trying to just enjoy the game.

With regard to the camera acceleration etc, have you adjusted them in the settings?

I did this in GTA and it made a huge difference - so I kept the same settings for this.

The same is true of the controls for first person - using the Standard FPS control scheme (I think!) makes it much easier and more natural.

I see where you’re coming from, when you look back at the controls they don’t actually make sense - I’ve just become accustomed to them so don’t really notice it I guess.

The very first thing I did was increase the sensitivity of the camera, it was wayyy too slow to begin with, it’s much more responsive now so I’d recommend trying that if you haven’t already.

Also, if you hold the options button on PS4 it brings up the map, saves you having to pause and click the map...just a little thing I noticed today, quite handy.

Of course I've adjusted them guys, but they are poorly implemented, that was the point. The whole game does seem like they ripped code from a 90's game, in actual fact it feels like one of my favourite games of all time Omikron: Nomad soul. Anyone who's played that will know exactly what I mean, especially the first person bits

But don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the game is shit by any stretch. Just like Witcher, I will be sinking stupid hours into this just like I already have. For example, it took me nearly a whole day to get to chapter 2 because (as my gf put it so nicely), ooooh shiney! And then I go running off

I'm just putting across what I see as the control issues for those not on reddit arguing like children ;)

I accidently found that via trying to do something else

Btw is there any way to ride a horse and keep it in a pack or even on the road at the same speed without holding anything? I'd like to be able to look around whilst the horse just follows whoever I'm with, but it seems like a weird combination of having to holding the stick or press x or bloody both. I keep thinking I'm missing something obvious that's not cinematic mode.

Did the training mission where that guy legs it out of the house and you're supposed to chase him. I thought I could vault the fence instead of running round which of course I couldn't, and so he was getting away as a speck in the distance, the guy yelled 'let him go he won't get far in this' and I was like nah feck that, pulled out my pistol and nailed him from so far away. Felt like Tom Sawyer at the end of the League of Gentlemen.

I'm really not sure how the cores work for my horse or for Arthur. Could someone give me a thorough explanation of it and or post a link where I can read up on it. It would help me immensely with the game. I still fecking love this mind you. It's epic.

So health and stamina have cores that drain slowly due to hunger. The bar around them is how much health and stamina you can use. If your health and stamina cores are full, the bars will regenerate quicker.

Dead eye cores dictate how much of the dead eye bar you gain every time you kill people/animals. If it's full, you'll regenerate more dead eye. It's different than health and stamina in that the dead eye bar doesn't actually regenerate on it's own, you have to smoke/drink/eat certain foods to get it back.

Cores also act as an "emergency reserve". For example if your health bar is 0 then your core is your remaining health. So essentially if your health core is empty, you have no reserve and you die when your health bar is depleted.

There are also tonics that can fortify health/stamina/dead eye (indicated by a yellow circle around the core), which stops them from depleting for a set amount of time. Also the bars can be levelled up to give you more of each stat.

HDR is screwed in this game btw, and it definitely looks better on the pro in 1080p.

I've done it myself now by running it through the PSVR V1 box, it's so much better. There's something wrong with their engine, it'll be interesting to see if it's sorted anytime soon.

Cheers. Can you improve your health and dead eye like you can with you stamina? I can only seem to improve my stamina.

Also my horse just died. :(

I don’t know where we’d be without you putting it across. Ta.

Cheers. Can you improve your health and dead eye like you can with you stamina? I can only seem to improve my stamina.

Health can be levelled up by: rowing boats, catching fish, killing with bow/throwing weapons, winning fist fights and drinking a Ginseng Elixer
Dead Eye levelled up by: Skinning animals, headshots from 50+ meters away, crafting items and cooking meals

I sometimes notice a +1 dead eye when I kill something but not always, the only way dead eye seems to fill is by eating though.

The other cores work how redlambs said, dead eye is either broke or wasn't explained well.

Coffee and tobacco also refill core.

Its a crazily fun game with flaws just like the Witcher and its gradually getting its claws into me so my vews might change. Its a very different game for me though as I'm finding the exploring way more fun than the story and side quests. In the Witcher I found the side quests and story focus way more interesting than RDR2, but find just looking around more fun than the Witcher.

So far I would say it doesn't quite stand up to TW3 and its obvious that they've looked at what that did and made a play for the same amount of real content rather than fetch quests but it is definitely growing on me as I play so we'll see.

You are very welcome my friend :D

Yeah, it's a grower for sure. I'm already enjoying it way more than gta5 and I grew to appreciate that, so the signs are good ;)

thanks for that!

Nooooooooo!

This is how I know I'm going to like this game for a long time, despite thinking it's a bit shit. I'm going to remember my first dead horse and the time I accidentally kill a character I like :(

I just got myself an Arabian white beside Isabella lake. 1 of 3 rare horses in the game. Called it Shadowfax.

Just started Chapter 3. Rhodes looks great.

Already had a fist fight with some Lemoyne Raiders in the bar after Dutch said not to start trouble  Beard is also coming along nicely.

Trying to work my way through the different satchels to unlock the mega satchel. Sod's bloody law that when I need a perfect buck pelt I don't see any bucks, having seen about 8 on my travels to go rob a train.

I also killed my horse again...coming up to a level crossing, I hear the 'choo choooo', look to my left and see a train. 'Nah, I can make that'.

Tapping X for all it's worth to get across the tracks. Horse stamina at zero, she fades, she's slowing down just in time for the train to annihilate both of us. We're doomed.

Damage limitation, get the horse to be hit at an angle to rag doll me away from the train. It works, I'm injured but alive. Seabreeze? She's gone. Through my tear filled eyes I de-saddle her and run to the nearest station with my saddle, the smell of her grey hide still ripe in my nose.

Sleep well Seabreeze.

Just bought this tonight and downloading it as we speak, the reviews were so overwhelmingly positive I figured Id give it a go!

That shit is driving me mad. I have scoured the map for a fecking badger. I think you're better off just exploring naturally and you'll come across stuff. Got perfect rabbit, squirrel, snake, coyote pelts just by riding along and seeing them.

Also, I think as your bond grows with the horse Arthur becomes more affectionate to it. My bond is maxed and he's gone from stuff like "Here girl" to "There's my girl".

If Silver dies, I'm reloading a save. Don't give a feck.

Caught a huge 17lb Longnose Gar after doing two whole minutes of reeling the thing in, whilst in the camp canoe.

There’s an option to return to shore with it since that size of fish requires you to physically hold it... so after spending a good 15 minutes of fishing which included reeling that one in, I thought I’d stop there and return to camp with it

So I take the Return to Shore option, which causes me to reappear on shore next to two fecking alligators in a pincer formation and get killed within 5 seconds and I lose my big catch.

Legitimately had to turn the game off after that point.. I was that annoyed. I’m gonna get my revenge though. Every alligator I see in game is getting a bullet to the cranium this weekend.

I found an illegal business in a gun shop, I went in and spent a fortune pimping my Lancaster repeater, then held up the owner and got a free repeater in the back room, whatever the final one is called. I was a bit miffed that I got it right after pimping the Lancaster, I turned the game off a few minutes later and went back to it. Well, auto resume on Xbox so it never really went off. My new rifle is nowhere to be found.

I eventually turned it off as I was enjoying hunting but couldn't get peace to do it with damn bounty hunters.

I appreciate how good this game is, but I’m finding it so hard to get into.

I was hoping when RDR2 was announced, it would be a sequel in something like 1917, and we’d have cars

Surely that would make little to no sense? The RDR series is about cowboys and outlaws, and the post WW1 era would be the totally wrong setting.

When can you start fishing? I haven't progressed the story too much, but i've done a few missions and haven't unlocked anything yet. Can i just buy fishing rod at any time?

Keep doing missions. The first 2 chapters are one giant tutorial that unlocks and explains things.
