Gaming Red Dead Redemption 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Stadia)

You clearly give a feck. Because you're making a big fuss about someone not being a fan of a developer/series. Who cares? That questionable source exists. The poster and his opinion exists. If he has 'agenda' I'm sure many others do too. How does anyone explain GTA IV getting a 10/10 from IGN? No bias there? Ban IGN?

Like I said, it's just a game. A lot of us will thoroughly enjoy it. Some won't. That's life.

What are you going on about now? Who mentioned anything about GTA IV? Why are you getting so defensive? Last week it was the same with Jev.

If you have no or very little interest in a game you don’t keep posting in the same thread. If you actually played the game and dislike it then fair enough. But to get all giddy after one review slates the story is a bit laughable really.

I don’t like Fortnight. But am I going to continue posting in the thread saying it’s overhyped. No because I have no interest in it or discussing the game. I move on to a game I’d enjoy because there’s tons of game out there which I told you about. A lot of short games with a nice story or whatever.

Good luck with your “gifted” copy.

And my post to him was nothing to do about this game in particular before you got so defensive. I just don’t understand people who moan before the game is even out about characters and shit. Oh noes there’s no playable female character. That’s all resetera and used to be neogaf bullshit. Let the developers use what character they see best. Including a playable female character isn’t going to make the story 100 times better if you haven’t liked the last 5 Rockstar story games. This is a western game and it makes perfectly good logical sense to base the game around a white character. It wouldn’t make sense if there’s a transgender in 1899 going around being a cowboy. Go read my posts in the neogaf thread, I laugh at this sort of pathetic shit and it has nothing to do with Rockstar or any game.

right....bought this for my old Xbox - think it's only got about 110gb storage - is it gonna run ok? in terms of storage

if I install it will I need to delete everything else - I still like a quick game of Rocket League

am I better cancelling and upgrading to an Xbox X?

saw a bundle including RDR2 for 409

110gb? how? I thought the minimum Xbone you could buy was 500gb.

So, is it good? Should I buy it? Even if I'm mostly meh about Rockstar's sandbox games (elaborate way of saying GTA, I know).

Let me make it clear, I give a feck insofar as I respond on this message board while at work. But you’re misconstruing what I ‘give a feck’ about: it’s the way he argued his points that I take offence to, not his opinions about the game itself. The term ‘agenda’ is massively overused on this forum but I feel it is genuinely applicable here.

You’re right, though, it’s just a game. You’re not the bloke I took issue with so no need for this discussion to continue.

How the feck do you do the quick draw duels? It tells you right as someone is about to end your life.

Depends how much you use your Xbox.

I buy the multiplatforms especially single player ones for X.

Digital Foundry said it runs only native 4K on X and obviously it runs best on X. The other plus point about the X is that when running the game, console is super quiet. Compare that to PS4 pro where some games the console gets really loud.

I’d have a look around as there been a few decent bundles.

Here’s one

That's a brilliant, well-written review that gives a much better insight into the game than a single score. Not the reviewer's fault that you can't be arsed to read.

I enjoyed that review too.

I bet this was your favourite part of the review.

Completed the story in around 64 hours, spent another six doing optional content. Robbed, pillaged, protected the innocent, bounty hunted, played poker, got drunk, skinned animals, and stole horses. Dressed up real fancy. Shaved my beard. Drove a train. Rowed a boat. Still have a ton of additional side stuff to explore.

Started playing at midnight, was originally going to quit before 2:30, just needed to get to the new camp and then settle... suddenly 40 mins had passed trying to make my way to Valentine to get a first glance at civilization. Getting up at 8 and getting ready for a 10 hour work day was tough, I want to get back into gaming.

This game is going to eat up so much of my time.

I personally can be arsed to read, that's why I read the review. The average internet user can't be arsed to read however. Won't be my fault when they go bankrupt.

One of my teacher's told me when writing for the web you have to keep in mind your audience gives you less time than an American (not actually American) idol contestant. Quite apt honestly.

Beautiful to look at so far - and I've only done the first 2 missions in Chapter 1. I left a wolf kill me for the craic to see how it looked, it's pretty intense to watch!

That's a pretty broad generalization. Digital longform journalism has gained popularity in recent years.

I quite liked the review, a bit up itself at times, but pretty well balanced.

I'm not surprised the controls are poop though, it's what stopped me finishing the first one and Undead nightmare. Rockstar just plain suck at game mechanics. Still, I'm off to get this now as even if I can't be arsed to play it through, my Mrs will love it so I'm very lucky there

That is a great review. With game reviews, I'm usually not convinced the reviewer has genuinely sunk enough hours in to it to really open it up enough to give a full disclosure on it, but that reviewer certainly has.

Really liked the specifics about the game mechanics and controls, and speaking about how "unfun" it is, in a positive way.

That depends on the subject matter ofcourse. There is a reason that metacritic generates more traffic than Kotaku does though. Let me put it this way, would you be happy if from here on out, no one would score their reviews? I think that would be fecking terrible. I'm a big fan of artistic writing, but a game review is not the place for it in my opinion.

Perhaps I'm just a dour old cnut though.

Eurogamer for years have not done review scores and they have been fine. I enjoy their reviews, probably out of all the major sites I would read their review first.

First of all: It's not quite fair to compare Metacritic to Kotaku, is it? Seems equivalent to comparing the Caf to Reddit.

Second, no, I like to get an overview from review aggregator sites like Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes. But I also think a score can be very reductive so I also like to read a couple of reviews to get a better sense of the game. And when they're as insightful and readable as this particular review, I don't care whether there's a score at the bottom or not.

On that I agree completely. A score is very open to interpretation. Some people scoff at their favorite game "only" getting an 8, whilst others think you should never ever give a game a perfect score.

ps: the caf is much better than reddit :p

Someone create a review and opinions thread or some shit. I want rdr2 discussion in here!!!

Done the first couple of missions..unsure about the horse controls tbh, seems to do what I want sometimes, then not bother doing what I want other times. Not sure about this having to eat malarkey either. Guess it depends how often I need to do it.

To be fair, some reviews actually do mention the exact things I was concerned about. Like Wired's with the headline: 'So big it feels like a chore'.

This means contributing to the camp’s coffers, hunting animals so the camp can eat, resupplying the medicine cart when supplies run low and upgrading the camp facilities when you’ve got a bit of spare cash from a recent heist. Sound like a chore? It feels like it. Where Red Dead Redemption reveled in the freedom of the undeveloped West, its follow-up sometimes gets bogged-down in the RPG-like intricacies of keeping going in the game world.

And the ending:

Perhaps it was inevitable that a game so meticulously polished requires an near-equal level of dedication from the player to truly get the most out of it. And if you’ve got the time and will to sink into it, RDR2 will provide ample rewards for your attention. But the best games don’t leave you when you’ve stepped away from the console. They hook into your brain and compel you to finish them as soon as you get the chance. Now, as I think about my half-empty in-game compendium and gun that needs oiling, the prospect of returning to Red Dead Redemption 2 feels like another line on my to-do list. Is it a perfect game? Sure. Does that make it a great one? Maybe not.

Same, but that comes from your horse and you not having a strong bond yet. As loyalty increases, so does the responsiveness of your horse.

Mine decided to turn the opposite direction on a cliff top and nearly bloody ended himself. Stupid prick. Gave him a pat later though, all forgiven.

Two hours according to reddit.

Anyway I bought it on the X. Looks stunning on my Sony XE94. Best looking game I played this gen.

You think there will be noticeable difference between X and the the Pro? I too have a 4k Sony Bravia, admittedly not as good but nevertheless - it's good to hear it looks amazing.

Will be interested to hear people's thoughts on this vs. The Witcher 3. Have the latter installed and never really gotten into it but if they're similar in terms of style and quality, maybe I should put the effort into Witcher 3 rather than buying RDR2

The game looks noticeably better on the Xbox One X.
