Its a mystery to me how they are doing as well as they are this season. I have watched them on multiple occasions and they have been largely tumescent and clueless every time, bar Newcastle at home.

Correct. That’s them in a nutshell. Bumrush bastards relying on weak refereeing and ping-pong goals inside the six-yard box. Klopp’s greatest accomplishment with that mob was conning the footballing fraternity into thinking they play a super brand of football.
It’s categorically false: long ball out wide, hit-and-hope cross into a box full of midgets, ping-pong, deflected shot, goal. That’s pretty much a classic Liverpool goal under Klopp and it’s incredible how he has hoodwinked everyone into believing otherwise.
I’ve watched them this season far often than I’d like to admit and the amount of luck combined with outrageous refereeing decisions in their favour is honestly preposterous. They could easily be down in 6th or 7th if even half of those went the other way. All you will hear about though is that one fecking offside decision.

I agree. I understand its hard for me to be objective as a rival fan but I can watch Arsenal and think 'what a well-coached, well-organised side' or City and think 'horrible cheats but undeniably exceptional on the pitch".
Liverpool however...it seems like if teams are happy to let them have the ball and also don't play into their hands by playing out from the back, then they do struggle to create chances.
20 late goals is ridiculous. Surely that cannot continue and at some point the variance will catch-up with them.
I hate them, and they do get lucky yes, but they also force the luck and suffocate teams with that high-energy. Thankfully its not sustainable.

I was saying this to a Liverpool fan, and surprisingly they actually agreed with me. Palace and another game I watched including Utd and Arsenal yesterday, plus a fee others. It's just spamming balls into the box and hoping one of them drops to Salah or someone else to tap it in.
They do not play good football.
People who think Alonso or someone else who plays in a more structured, less chaotic style of play can come in and get this long ball team playing neat and tidy football might be in for a big surprise.
