Rashford | Villa | Loan with option to buy

You'd think one would at least take enough care to not look like he's been homeless for the past 3 months in the OFFICIAL announcement picture....
Exactly this. Even in the photo he looks like he isnt up for it.

Well Rashford's relationship with Amorim was broken and he's on huge wages so great to see this deal go through. On the other hand, it's far from ideal seeing another player from academy leaving after McTominay (though I wanted both gone for different reasons) but it is what it is.

Villa to come to Old Trafford last day of the season but Rashford obviously won't be able to play in that game. By then we'll probably know if Villa are going to use that option to buy.

With all seriousness, he is the last player I have been a fan of, not so much in last few years though. So I do wish him well and hope he does great at Villa for bigger clubs outside the PL to seriously bid for him in the summer transfer window. If he gets his act together, he has another 2-3 years to showcase his talent.

Feels so wrong not seeing him in a United shirt. He should have made it here, won the PL with us, and retired here. Whatever the chain of blame, there is no way any of the club, the player or the fans would be happy with how things turned out.

Such a shame.

I don't think the man has been enjoying the last few months....

Does the clause allow other teams to match the bid too? I'd hate to see him tearing it up for someone other than us in the league :(

Not really buy Villa could trigger the option and then just sell him for profit.
That would sting. But I guess 40 is the best we could do given the circumstances. Hope he does well, will definitely be following Villa more closely now.

I must be in the minority that thinks this is a crazy decision. Especially coming off the back of a 2-nil defeat and with us struggling for goals.

Right -now- Marcus Rashford is our fourth top scorer with 4 goals. That's double Hojlund's tally. It's not like we are blessed with options. We needed to at least have some options until the end of the season and not burn bridges with the squad until we actually sign some players that can, you know, play football? Or at least demonstrably at least score goals better than Rashford, which none of our team have done.

I can understand why it was done if behind the scenes there were problems. But it's just yet another depressing reminder of what seems to happen to all our talented footballs in recent years

That's all the more reason to show up at your new job looking good!
Life is not like that though is it? I've already said on this forum that I think more is going on with him.... I'm going to leave it that as I really cba

That SamC guy tweeting out Rashford signing contract with Villa as "Worldwide Exclusive" pretty much confirms to me that Rashford was behind the team leaks as that account was well known for team leaks in FPL circles for some time.

And Athletic has documented pretty well last season when he went on a night out drinking in Belfast and then calling in sick next day and didn't report for training.

ETH had to sit him on the bench one time because he overslept and was late for a team meeting.

We've all seen how he behaved on the pitch for a long time. Not to mention Andy Mitten recently mentioning that all United managers had issues with Rashford's attitude. He failed himself first and foremost with all his antics and then all the fans who've always backed him even when he was ambling about not giving a single feck.
You are joking… I mean, had Villa put that pic out already??

haircut from your personal barber, tailored suit, professional make up to make you look livelier...it's really not a lot of effort

If he can't even spare that, damn....

It would be surprising if he is not unhappy.

For a long time, he's lived in a bubble where he's basically been invincible. Let's be honest, he's never really trained properly. Was never asked to track back or press because he lacked the stamina (it always astounded me that commentators like Neville and Carragher would say this matter of factly and just move on, rather than dwell for a moment on what a scathing criticism it actually is). Even during the good times under solskjaer, solskjaer remarked that he was too delicate to play centrally.

And over the past few years, his form has dropped off a cliff and still he's been untouchable. I think it stands to reason that his standards off the pitch were reflected in his performances. Nary a word said in the press, despite even Southgate dropping him for the Euros. Only the fans really being fed up and that never showed in the stadium.

Then in the past three months he's been exiled and publicly shamed by his manager for his low standards in training, tried a power play that backfired spectacularly and basically let to him guiding himself out the door of a club I reckon he thought he would play his entire career for. His current world is tremendously different from the one he thought he lived in just four months ago.

And then his self image took a further hit when no one actually wanted him. Except villa after they sold their two best forwards.

I think his coming to terms with a reality where he's had an easy ride throughout his career (footballingwise. The pummelings he has taken in the public sphere for wanting to feed kids is different matter altogether) and from that standard has allowed himself to slide below any acceptable standard at this level. And it's led to outcomes, and future paths, that are probably really unhappy prospects for him in all cases.

Maybe he'll wake up somehow at villa and the change of environment will do him good (I am reminded of Brad Friedel who said he had to fail at Liverpool before he started taking his career seriously). Looking at him at the announcement, I wouldn't rule a depression from here. He seems the opposite of grounded and his values and priorities greatly at odds with the current outcomes, so different from what he has come to expect in life.

I actually always liked rashford despite his obvious flaws. There's always been a genuineness about the way he carried himself. And obviously very admirable with his non football endeavours. But from where I am sitting this is the result of a steady development of poor habits coming together rather than something suddenly happening in his life.

I'd rather place 14th while getting rid of the waste, than keeping it and finishing 8th.

It had to happen but still doesn't quite fell right

I guess I hope he does does kinda well but we really need to start winning some games so we can put all this to bed

He split with his girlfriend and went to shit on the pitch, then he got back with her and scored 30 goals. Then she left again, and he has been god awful.

I doubt its a coincedence.

His face and cheeks are so bloated….weird
I got laughed out the place when I suggested that he looked a little bloated when he came back the season after his 30-goal season. So I decided it must just be me getting it wrong. But I have definitely noticed that again this time. Seems to happen when he’s not been playing.

I have heard similar. A fall down to earth might do him good long term.

Weird to see him in another shirt but we needed rid of him.

8th place is worth millions though. If you're gonna do it, there needs to be some movement transfer or academy-wise. Else we are just freefalling, we are in relegation form right now.

Even if more is not going on, what he is going through is enough to send anyone into a spiral. The pressure of a club like Man United is immense.

I think it's a great move and he will probably score 10 goals or so for them. It's a move that was needed for both parties, but hopefully he does well and secures a permanent move.

To be clear, a lot of this is his own doing I agree..... Still, it's sad to see it play out

Good luck to Marcus, one of us and lived the dream. Change of scenery needed for the sake of his career. Lets hope he can get back on track and we get a tidy sum for him that could be more than the £40m if he does well and the bigger clubs are interested.

That’s not an option, right? Because in that scenario Villa just exercise the 40m option. Then they hold onto a striker who is doing well for them, with a possibility of selling him on for serious money the next transfer window if his good form continues. There’s basically no chance we sell him to anyone other than Villa unless it’s for <£40m.

Yep. Can't help but think a lot of this came down to naivety and a club environment where he never needed to grow out of it until it was all too late, moreso than bad intent. Sad really.

Yeah, it’s definitely very sad the way this ends. For all sorts of reasons. Having a local lad banging in goals and feeding underprivileged kids is the sort of thing dreams are made of. Can still remember the Liverpool fans giving him a standing ovation. Which is basically unheard of.

To end up like… this… is desperately sad.

With the exception of Tevez, I wish all former United players well. I hope he shine for them. But of course not when we play them.
