Raphael Varane

From Sky Sports:

United wait on Varane

Man Utd will find out within 48 hours if their bid for Lens starlet Raphael Varane has been successful.

United have been tracking the Lens stopper for a number of months and were the first side to make a move for him this summer.

They lodged a bid of around €10million for the 18-year-old central defender, who admitted he was considering his options carefully.

Varane intimated he would like to continue playing first-team football next season, so United were set to allow him to move back to France on loan.

Real Madrid, who have also lodged a bid, were also happy for him to return as part of the deal but he also looks set to have the option to move within his homeland as Paris Saint Germain have also lodged an offer.

And it is PSG who have emerged as favourites to land his signature, despite the attention of the two European giants.
Decision

Lens president Gervais Martel confirmed that interested clubs will soon find out Varane's future.

"Given the clubs involved, it would be very hard to stop him [from moving," Martel told La Voix du Nord.

"I hope this will be finalised in the next 48 hours - I have just spent four hours on the phone, and there are many things to settle."

Another defender??

We could seriously play with 9 defenders, 1 GK and 1 striker..

De Gea
Rafael - Varane - Jones - Smalling - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evans - Fabio - Evra

Rooney

:drool::drool:

Hope we sign him, then we should be fine regarding defenders in the next 8-10 years. I heard he can also play as a midfielder, is that correct?

Left us - VDS / Neville
Rmours will leave - Brown / O'shea / PIG
Players likely to arrive - De Gea
Players signed - Jones

That would leave us

Lindegard Amos De Gea

Rafael Fabio Evra Evans Smalling Rio Vidic Jones

Points to note
Expectations are Rio will be rested often.
Will the twins get over their run of inuries
Will Evra get back to form
Will Evans get back to form

You might think Varane is surplus to requirements but imagine we lose Rio for a few months, Evra and Evans slump continues and the twins continue their bad luck with injuries. That would leave us with Vidic Smalling Jones + 1 short ie Varane.

Commadus, your analysis has one minor flaw: according to the rumours, if we do sign Varane we'll loan him back to France for a season...

I know of that but we can always call him back if needed.

SAF must havea plan for him he's not like Rafa just buying players for the hell of it.

Even if Evra's slump continues I don't see him being dropped for a centre-half, bad form doesn't mean a player ceases to exist. Besides, we won't sell O'Shea and he's well capable of playing as a centre-half, which means we actually have six players who can play there at the moment, I cannot see why we would buy another one unless Fergie's desire is to beat Barcelona by swiping all talented defenders off the market so they're left with Pascal Cygan and Philipe Senderos.

Aren't we already fine for defenders for the next 8-10 years though? It seems a bit much...but then many of us thought the same about signing Vidic at the time.

Surely it depends on whether Brown and O'Shea move on

Thing is. It seems we have put in an official bid so SAF must be thinking how he can incoporate Varane.

I thought he could play left back as well as central midfield.

Or Varan is like Smalling - a hot prospect that SAF can mould.

Or we are going 3-5-2 . YEEEEEEEEEEEEEE hAAAAAAAAAAAAA

From the sounds of things from Brwned and the french posters, Phil Jones probably has more ability on the ball and experience in midfield. So if one of the two was going to be drafted into that role from time to time surely it'd be Jones

President Gervais Martel has indicated that Lens have turned down bids from Manchester United and Real Madrid for promising youngster Raphael Varane.

And the club chief says he would prefer to sell the centre-back to a Ligue 1 club than let him make an overseas move.

United recently launched a bid for Varane after tracking the 18-year-old for a number of months, while Real were also thought to have tabled an offer.

But Martel says those bids, which he claims topped €10million (£8.9m), have been rejected, with Lens' French rivals Paris St German looking increasingly likely to the snare the youngster.

"The asking price is around €10m," he told radio station RMC. "Certain big overseas clubs have offered more, but I quickly shut the door on them."
Revelation

Varane, who was a revelation in Ligue 1 last season, making 22 starts and scoring two goals, is thought to have attracted interest from across Europe.

Relegated Lens are expected to cash in on the France Under-21 international, with top French clubs reportedly queuing up for his signature.

Martel has confirmed PSG's interest in the youngster, but says his future is still undecided.

"Paris St Germain have made me an offer, probably the worst kept secret around," he added.

"A second club is also interested in him, but he isn't necessarily guaranteed first-team football there either.

"We are on the same wavelength as the player. It's all a question of timing. By the time he's graduated, I don't think we'll be too far from finding a solution."

I don't think another temperamental, demanding French kid is what we need to invest in these days. This whole transfer has been pissing me off recently.

Leave him to stew in his own piss and give me a British centre back anyday.

He should be honoured by the interest shown in him and know his place.

Football is turning into a game for metrosexual, moisturising, spoiled brat, Hollywood she-men.

feck the twat, leave him in corrupt France.

Damn. I hope we put in another bid.

Why would we? Its fairly obvious that we have bid above their asking price so it is clear that either the club or the player himself has asked the club to reject their offers.. Its not like he is making a bad decision.. Its a smart career decision to stick on in France for a few years.. Become a regular player and then look elsewhere..

Well said.

So two months ago he was worth £3m and now £10m isn't enough?

Of course, in that period he has played exactly zero games.

What a load of rubbish. Are you serious?

From what I read about him he sounds mature for his age. Nothing wrong with his believe in himself. I found it refreshing and I think he's well advised to have concerns about his playing time at a club like ours.

To be so young and have a long term plan is something to admire, I wish more young starlets would do the same.

Totally serious!

I understand we were happy to loan him back for at least one season, so playing time is not an issue. Madrid has offered the same.

Really, why are we bothering? I read with joy Phil Jones bursting with enthusiasm to get training with the lads. They are similar aged and at a similar stage in their careers.

I couldn't give a shite at this juncture where he goes.

I hope you get your wish about "young starlets" but I would suggest you are seriously deluded.

Temperamental. Demanding. French. That would never work at our club.

:smirk:

Did we dither so slightly on this deal? Usually most of our deals are kept confidential but this has been in the public eye for a number of weeks..

Rio, Vidic, Smalling, Jones & Evans - I'm not too fussed tbh

Anyone seen Varane play? How much potential has he got?
