Raphael Varane | Signed new contract to 2022

What worries me about him is that both the club and Zidane wanted him to be that starter and he lost out to Pepe. Yes, injuries played a big part, but being outperformed by 33 year old Pepe is not an encouraging sign IMO.

Yet another poster who's hung up on a players age! Pepe is a very very good defender. He is deservedly a starter for Real, his age has jack all to do with his on the pitch performances.
Varane joined the wrong club to learn his trade. He needs regular game time to take that next step up.

The body begins slowing down already in your 30's. My point is that Varane has not taken that next step that everyone expected he would. He has all the elements to be a legendary centre back, but something is missing. Maybe he needs to leave Madrid to take that step.

I've seen top level sprinters break their personal bests in their 30's. So please don't try make out we are all the same. There are many many factors involved in body conditioning. Players don't suddenly slow down on their 30th birthday.
Personally would say Pepe has just had one of his best ever seasons.

But Pepe has far more experience and defensive nous, that he gained from his experience. Defending is more about the brain than the body, so as long as Pepe is fit, he will beat Varane, until Varane gains as much knowledge as Pepe.

The problem is he won;t get that sitting on the bench.

There comes a time for a club when they need to give the future a chance. That's especially the case in defence when ideally you want a player to be a long term fixture in that position. Smalling is a good example here. Not the best defender I'd ever seen when arrived but the club have persisted rather than replacing him and are now reaping the rewards.

Varane looks like a superb athlete and a very good defender whenever I'd watched him. For me Real Madrid would be mad to let him go to allow Pepe to solider on for another couple of years

No, he won't because he is a crock. He is the french Badstuber.

Why are we being linked with him? We just signed Bailly, and reports in Spain and Italy suggest that Mourinho has told the club Darmian isn't going anywhere. Plus, Mourinho explicitly referred to Bailly as a central defender when his signing was announced. All adds up to Eric Bailly being our starting centre half.

Being linked with Varane would only make sense if Jose wants rid of Smalling. Surely not? Or is this just another case of relatively well known player may be leaving his club, hence Manchester United must be interested?

As per reports In marca the club will offer him a new contract and if he does not sign then he maybe allowed to leave. Its decision time for him.He is frustrated at being a bench player behind ramos and pepe. Zidane wants to keep him but the decision is upto him. They then randomly mention us and mourinho.

This story smells like such BS. Varane already has a contract until 2020 and there is no pressing need to sign him to a new deal. Plus, its simply not true that he he has been treated as a "bench player." He started 25/31 La Liga games for which he was fit enough. He also started a lot of UCL games in the first part of the year. He played 2619 minutes total, Pepe 2732, Ramos 2842. Basically, it was an even distribution among those three players. I'm sure Varane would love to play every game, and maybe it was frustrating not to start against Wolfsburg and City, but its not like he is just sitting on the bench all the time.

No matter what we need another CB. I'm sure Mo doesn't see Blind as a CB, and our options right now are Bailly, Smalling, Jones, Mcnair and Rojo. Unless he trusts two of your promising youngsters, (TFM/Poole/Williams/Axel), which I highly doubt, we need to at least replace Jones and Mcnair, as well as hopefully upgrade on Rojo. I think replacing Jones/Rojo with TFM and another signing should do the trick.

A cursory glance at Wikipedia says he's played 79 club games in the last two seasons. Not really the form of a "crock".

And 12 for France in 2015/2016. So a decent average of 45 games a season.

Cheers for the expert medical opinion though.

I was jestting, the Badstuber reference should have been a hint.

If we can get 30/35 m€ I would sell him.Personally I prefer CB like Pepe,Godín,etc.I thought that he had played less minutes.I have the feeling that he is always with pain or playing after an injury.

Pepe is a really good player in good shape and extremely experienced, his age is completely irrelevant.
Second this. People heavily underrated Pepe ability. IMO Pepe was the best CB in the world in term of actual performance the season Real won 10th CL. This past season he is again among the best (better than Ramos). People are too caught up in the Pepe thuggish reputation and didn't see his actual performance.

Varane has the potential to be world class CB, but he still have quite some distance to cover in term of experience. His injury record doesn't look good.

You jinxed him today then

Sign him and get rid of Jones. What a set of defenders we'd have then.

Varane? Never in a million years will they sell him. Would take both him and James mind.

Why not? Pepe and Ramos will be first choice for the next few years and Varane hasn't really taken his chance when given an opportunity.

Is it true they need to sell if they want to buy? I saw something briefly on sky yesterday but they're not exactly great with their sources.

Pepe is 33 to be fair.

Zidane was a huge factor why he joined. I doubt it is Zidane who is now not keen on him

He is Real's third CB, soon first choice. They wont get a better one in a few years if they sell him now. I dont think Isco is on the transfer list either. James obviously is, because he is so far down the pecking order.

With Varane we would have one helluva defence.

Shaw---Varane--Smalling--Bailly

OR

Shaw--Varane--Bailly--Darmian

Lots of options and quality. We can feck off Rojo and with that line keep Jones for another year at least.

These rumors around Varane are ridiculous. He's even linked to us. Real is stupid at times, but not *that* stupid.

No way Real would sell. If they did, they'd have to replace him.. And who else could they get that's better for the money? Not going anywhere.

He's not really progressed since moving there. Still makes far too many mistakes for my liking.

I'm a big fan but hard to argue. Also harsh not to at least slightly excuse him though, he's had a disastrous time with injuries.

If he gets over his injuries I think he'll be the best around, but that's a big question mark.

I think United will continue their pursuit of Varane as long as Mourinho is the boss. Mourinho obviously rates Varane as one of the best defenders around, or at least as the potential to be.

Let's hope Pepe keeps his second choice status at CB (After Ramos). Varane can't be too happy about getting replaced for the CL knockout games. As a Real Madrid player, those games, bar the domestic games against Barca and Atletico Madrid, are the only ones you are desperate to be part of.

I think another season of being dropped might make him question his future at Madrid.

Hasn't progressed much in the last few years imo. His injury record is also dodgy.

1) If Pepe is still above him in the pecking order for the majority of the season then many clubs will think "Hmmhhh maybe after all he isn't so amazing".

2) If Real Madrid are getting their transfer ban then he'll stay there till July 2018.
