I don't think he will sign for us, but he would be one of my top priorities. Can become an unbelievable defender.

If this is true then Varane must be a player that Jose was supposedly texting to follow him to United.
If a bid is placed then he wants to come imo.

Rumour has it there were a few, so that would perhaps mean Varane and Ibrahimovic, anyone else likely?

i'll be two for two if we get him. I just have this feeling Zidane will have a say in this and persuade him to stay at Real, however if he "loves" Jose as much as he raves about him then Verane could always hand in a transfer request and force his way out / go on strike etc. A player can nearly always force their way out if they want and the other party will pay the cash

I think we'll sign one of the crop of top-tier young CBs. The best one, Gimenez, is probably completely out of reach, so it'll be one of Varane, Marquinhos, or Stones. I really hope it isn't the latter.

Disagree. I'm absolutely one for having English centre halfs at our club and whilst the lad hasn't had the best second half of the season he'll be up there soon.

But I do also agree I'd rather have verane over stones right now. Marquinhos I can see leaving us for real or barca due to 'weather issue's once he becomes amazing.

It's pretty positive if we've bid as it's surely done in the knowledge that he'd like to come. But I doubt his will to join a club that's currently way behind Real, managed by the national icon of his footballing home will manifest in going on strike. That would be surreal.

Varane recently complained that he felt unimportant at Madrid so we don't know whats going on behind the scenes.
He's 23 and must of thought he would be the lynchpin of tbe Madrid defence by now never mind being a regular.

A chance to get a certain Spanish goalkeeper perhaps...

On the outside that would seem to be the only carrot for Real. It may be more to it than that. But if that's the case, we're of course better off looking elsewhere for defenders.

Why did Real sell Ozil or Di maria or Higuain? Its a strange club - its a circus of a club.

They need the cash for whichever non-Barca player stars in the Copa America or Euro.

It depends on how desperate he is to quit Madird. £29m seems a fair price.

Both will occur this summer . What shirt number Varane would wear for United? :wenger:

I'm not very optimistic on this one but he'd be a great buy, him and Smalling as CB's with Blind sitting in front of them as the #6 could be fantastic.

I rate him but like 2 years ago I'm against a transfer because he is a sicknote.

Such an overrated/typical FIFA defender, did well in one or two matches vs Messi in his first breakthrough, and is a great athlete but some act as if he's world class or close to it. He's fast, strong, big but his positioning, reading of the game, prone to errors isnt that special really, he's young and got loads to improve, but he really isnt Smalling's level yet, although he has the potential. Good attackers can completely drag him out of position. It isnt a coincidence that Pepe - Ramos is still the first duo and Zidane who brought him himself continues to play them. Not that they're poor defenders ofcourse.

-Has a contract until 2020
-Pepe is 33
-No obvious replacement for Varane on the market from Real's perspective
-Real is quite likely to get a transfer ban and be unable to register players after this summer

Sorry, but this is a pipe dream. Real have no incentive to sell whatsoever.

Also, its not like Varane is out of favor in Madrid. Of the 31 La Liga matches for which he was available (ie, not injured or suspended), he started 25. He also started 5 of the 10 CL matches for which he was available. He has been on the bench in the latter stages of the CL, probably because Zidane knows that one mistake can be fatal in that competition, but its not like he has been on the bench all season or hasn't had opportunities.

He's a lot better than John Stones. No matter which (wouldn't be surprised if we go for both) we get, they'll need Mourinho's tutelage to reach their best for us. I'm not sure Smalling's performances in the last couple months merit placing him on such a high pedestal either. He was great for most of the season but his end of season performances have convinced me he's not at a world class level yet by any means. I'd be happy if we got Varane, though £29m was a fair price imo, wouldn't go much higher than that.

His injury problems are definitely a big concern. I think without them he'd have been the world's best (or close to) by now but as it is I don't think he's any better now than he was in his debut season. Which is still good but not great...young enough to put it all together still though.

Would be delighted with Varane.

Hopefully can steer clear of injuries.

Doubt he'll move though.

Why are we even looking to buy him? We have unbelievable bad luck with injuries and this guy is nearly always injured. He has actually stagnated in his improvement simply cos he is always injured.

Tend to agree with this. Potential is obvious but we can't really afford to take a gamble given his injuries.

Between Varane, Laporte, Gimenes and Marquinhos... who do you prefer?

As per reports In marca the club will offer him a new contract and if he does not sign then he maybe allowed to leave. Its decision time for him.He is frustrated at being a bench player behind ramos and pepe. Zidane wants to keep him but the decision is upto him. They then randomly mention us and mourinho.

What worries me about him is that both the club and Zidane wanted him to be that starter and he lost out to Pepe. Yes, injuries played a big part, but being outperformed by 33 year old Pepe is not an encouraging sign IMO.

Pepe is a really good player in good shape and extremely experienced, his age is completely irrelevant.

It's been speculated for a while that he has chronic knee issues and often needs injections to play.

The body begins slowing down already in your 30's. My point is that Varane has not taken that next step that everyone expected he would. He has all the elements to be a legendary centre back, but something is missing. Maybe he needs to leave Madrid to take that step.
