Raphaël Varane

I think some people in here are clearly underrating Smalling. He's no Beckenbaur on the ball, but on the deck or in the air he's virtually unbeatable. Must stay fit to give himself the chance to grow, because for me he is our best centre half by a long way.

Flawless in the Allianz last season too.

Hm. I am not sure anyone can be flawless in a loss like that.

That's unfair I think. He, Kagawa and Valencia were outstanding, Welbeck was a threat too. We were let down by some other individuals, otherwise it was a very good team performance in which we were the better side for most of it bar a late collapse. If Rooney was of any use in that game, we would have won.

Has this been posted yet?

Unreal.

Varane is the perfect example of talent who need to play games, when he was given the chance he was an absolute beast, the biggest defensive talent in the world. Since he's being benched more often, in the CL, and at the World Cup he was extremely dodgy and just not the same.. He needs playing time, just like Januzaj does for example.

So he too rejected us. List of players who supposedly rejected us is endless.

Well, when Zidane got involved it was game over for us, he called him and told him that he was going to help him settle.

Read on the BBC gossip column that he turned us down because we just signed Phil Jones?

Probably bullshit, but interesting. I doubt most here would sacrifice Phil Jones for anyone, solely for the fact it's Phil Jones.

Mou:

Mourinho told Telefoot: 'I was on holiday and in Madrid. Zinedine Zidane arrived with a DVD and I thought, "That player, with two years' work with us, would be fantastic".

'Varane had one foot at Manchester United but Real Madrid are very strong and Rapha came to us.'

I meant in the case of a hypothetical situation such as 'would you rather have signed Varane or Jones'?
Varane looks a few levels above as a talent from what I've seen. Looks a natural defender and great on the ball.

He does. People on here love Jones though.

I would pick Varane right now, but I reckon a lot of people wouldn't for that face alone.

Varane is a much better defender then Jones and he can also play 3-4 games at a row without breaking into pieces.

Its all a part of the "Phil Jones: Greatest human being" thing. Varane is obviously better but you have to laugh at it lol

Express claiming he is available for 19m.

The Express are of the same credability as transferrumours4u.com

I made that adress up but you get the point. We should break the bank for him let alone £19m. I'd be happy if we paid £45m for him.

So would I. He is probably at or near Rio's level when we signed him way back in 2002 while being a coupe of years younger. Considering the market inflation through the 12 seasons gone by, one might argue £45 million would represent a relative bargain.

That said Real aren't going to let him go as long as Zidane is involved in the club as a major power-broker.

Wouldn't surprise me the slightest if Mourinho tried his darndest to lure Varane to Chelsea, having previously worked with him and made him first choice over the more experienced Pepe. A potential pairing of Varane and Zouma (if he develops as projected) would be brilliant for more than a decade. That said, the player has no incentive to leave Madrid considering he just signed a lucrative new deal and is very much a part of their long term plans.

He's probably better than what we have & I'd be happy if we bought him but I'm still not convinced he's "that" good. He hasn't played enough football yet to be deemed a really top central defender & it's mostly hype rather than good performances that make people think he's amazing.

Did you happen to see his El Classico performance a couple of years ago? He's had numerous games where he's not performed so well which is to be expected at his age but that performance against Barcelona was as good a performance I have seen from anyone. He was supreme defensively and was equally a threat in attack at corners. He was what, 19? 20? At the time.

He's as sure a bet for being a world class defender in the future as you're ever going to get.

You're completely right & he should go on to be a really good defender. I'm not slating him by any means, he looks to have everything that you would want in a defender but he still hasn't played enough football to be considered a top player yet or a "sure thing". As you said he's had some great games but he's also made mistakes. Who knows if the great games he's had will be the norm or if errors creep into his game. He may be over his knee injury or he may have more problems, we'll just have to wait & see.
He does look a "sure thing" but there's still doubts.

Varane is clearly better to the CBs we've got and he wont break in pieces every few games. He'll be a great addition to the team

The best young CB in the world and already one of the best CB's period, we should do what it takes to get him here if there is any (admittedly unlikely) truth to this.

The only hope we can cling to is the fact that Real are a bit mental with who they buy/sell. That aside, as much as I would love it, just cant see it happening. Most talented young CB about and just signed a new contract.

I like The Phil Jones as much as anyone on here, but in all honesty he's just not consistent enough. Get this dude before Chelsea snap him up. Hell get this guy just so they can't get, we don't need them bracing their already impenetrable defence.

Will be Jose's big money signing for Chelsea in the next few years

He's always been underrated and Jones has always been overrated yet they are at a similar level.

Let's not waste our time focusing on him. We had our chance before he went to Madrid.

Pepe and Ramos aren't youngsters, Madrid know this and just gave Varane a new long term deal. Safe to say he won't be forced out due to his wage demands like Di Maria was.
