Friction between him and Ten Hag according to the Norwegian supporters’ club podcast, but they don’t go into detail.

I thought that last season but this season I thought he was looking almost Smalling-esque in that way he was turning his body before passing sometimes. Granted he's not been fit but RCB is probably one of the most pressing areas we need to strengthen which is a bit sad when you think of his profile and he's not that old.

You're going to have to elaborate if you want any kind of response.

That was just a summary of my previous post, in which you'll find what I was getting at. Namely, our slow build up and lack of movement. It stems from the 2nd choice defense.

I don't think Varane offers a material upgrade on Maguire for passing speed/range/choice to be honest, Maguire is decent in those departments although miles off the ball playing CB I think some people thought he was watching him for England. Varane this season has really dropped off and it's impacting his game, I will caveat as I said to the other poster, he's likely not been fit, but the slow build up and lack of movement for me comes more from the missing players and midfield setup. If I look at our CBs, Varane, Evans, Maguire, Lindelof I'd bucket into one group of all being decent on the ball with none of them being that great, Lindelof has periods where I think he's much better but he's too much of a liability all round.

Shaw and Licha being out ruin our build up and stunt the LW massively, once one of them returns (which seems ages away) I think we'll see things start to look a lot better. We still need better CMs though.

I don't disagree about the importance of the two missing nor the lack of adequate midfield. However, I think of the four available centre backs the best on the ball and most tactically sound, which also helps cut out unnecessary passes or too many touches which speeds up play, are Varane and Evans. And I'd pair the two of them as much as possible. I don't think Varane has seen a rapid decline, I absolutely assume it is fitness related. That being said, I wonder if he's on the bench just in case of emergency while not being fit enough or if ETH genuinely prefers Maguire.

Somebody tell me what the feck is going on.
I think the big hint is what ten hag said in his presser.
He mentioned in one of his answers how the team needs to have a routine in the way they play out from the back and in order to do that you need dependably fit players to build a chemistry.

Had Varanes fitness (can't play twice a week) been better I'm sure he'd play him. But he likely thinks "feck this, if I have to swap him out every game, won't build match rhythm from the back".

i mean i get the reasoning behind that, but evans/maguire is not doing shit for helping us playing out from the back. If this is gonna be the case moving forward we need to sell him in january to a saudi club and bring in a replacement that is high quality we can build around.

Varane is worse. I'm sure I watch a different player to most of you.

Totally agree. It seems more like some desperate attempt to win games against weaker teams as those two are both great at clearing balls in the box, but it is not developing the team nor building for the future. Not that Varane is the future, but he could at least fit and work in a team with higher ambitions than pure survival.

Mad that we were trying to shift Maguire all summer and the Evans signing was done a few games into the season, yet they are now keeping Varane out of the side.

What was Ten Hag’s plan back in the summer? He clearly wanted to play Varane but has now decided he’s not good enough to play out from the back, even though we don’t play out from the back.

The more we get from Ten Hag, the more it feels like he’s making it up as he goes along.

I must admit, as weird as it is that he is now behind Maguire and Evans, he's one of the first players I'd be happy to see sold to an oil rich league if a Fabinho level offer came in.

Manchester United Varane is definitely replaceable.

In CL night, it turned from "Champions League Varane" to "Benched for Maguire&Evans Varane"

Manchester United everyone is definitely replaceable. He's still by far our best available defender.

What I see is that we really need a DOF, something like what Mark Overmars did with ETH at AJAX.
ETH probably saw Varane as a ball playing Centre Half and went for him. It should have been ETH to DOF, I need a ball playing Centre Half and then the DOF goes and finds one, of the right age and ability. Together they make the decision. ETH may not like the choice so we restart. Both need to be happy with the choice

Has there been rumours about a falling out or are people just saying that because of the team selection?

Bro ETH didn’t sign Varane haha

He's been on the bench for more than 2 weeks now and yet Maguire and Evans keep starting. It's not like Varane is being kept out by world class players. Understandable why people think there might be a fall out between them.

The plan was move on Maguire and buy either Todibo or Pavard.

Evans playing for United in 2023 is a disgrace. I know we have a lot of injuries but it has to be said, this team on the pitch right now doesn't look much better than our 2021-2022 team.

If you aren’t going to pick him when he is actually fit then there is absolutely no point in him being here.

Thats not what I've asked. Has it actually been reported or are people jumping to conclusions?

Evans and Maguire getting picked over Raphael fecking Varane. It is obviously that something is going on between him and Erik.

he came on 93rd min v Fulham so I'd wager a bet he's probably picked up a minor injury that prevents him from starting.

I don't know if it has been reported or not but it's a reasonable assumption to have considering the players that are playing ahead of him.
