Ralf Rangnick | ex-interim manager | does anyone rate him?

It is very difficult.

When you buy the 1st/2nd best player in the world (depending on who you ask) and pay them 2 million a month you expect instant results, I'm sure Sir Alex expected it when he facilitated the Ronaldo coup from under the noses of Utd's noisy neighbours (as he called them).

But it hasn't worked out so well and you can't really then take the long view and try to build a team around that player, who will be 37 in a couple of months....

Of course, all this is not the fault of Mr Rangnick, but I have said it before and I will say it again a certain Scotsman has a lot to answer for. 20 years of success followed by how many years of struggle and when the barren years are as a result of the man who brought that success..... do the fans care? Or do they get out the old DVDs and hold him on a pedestal as they always have or do some brave fans start to wonder if what he did towards the end of his reign (the Glazers/no investment in players/or Old trafford/Moyes/Ronaldo etc.) should he perhaps be held up for criticism?

Can't keep living in the past, that is what Liverpool did for thirty years....
 
The problem is him fitting players in positions they are not comfortable in. I was under the impression he was a hard man so I don’t understand why he has a problem dropping players that don’t fit his ideal tactic. Bruno cannot play in our current formation. Rashford is worthless on the right. He needs to fix this now. Newcastle is not a game we should be dropping points.

Cant believe we're doing this again. 8 years after the man retired. Jesus almighty.
 
So far he doesn’t seem to accurately identify the underperforming pieces during the game. Some weird subs between today and Norwich. I think he will soon realize that in this league you can only gain the control through sustained possession spells, especially, in away games to kill off the crowd’s momentum. Engaging in vertical football can work wonders at home behind OT crowd but aways can become really messy affairs if you constantly lose possession with risky passes. Sometimes a pass for the sake of pass is not a bad idea.
 
He might have a brilliant mind for the game but he’s, if not already, finding out the size of the task he has. Tactically, it’s one thing, but the general demeanour of the team is lacklustre and he’s got his work cut out for him to change that. He has avoided the ‘body language’ argument this time but the fans aren’t mugs, we can see the heads of the players are not right. I don’t know how he can change it other than start dropping players and tell them to earn their place back.

It might be 8 years after he retired, but its 5 months after he was key in making a massive decision that totally fecked up the clubs direction of travel and has left Rangnick and whomever gets the job in 2022, a huge problem to deal with....
 
Its way too early to judge, but my only gripe is he seems hell bent on starting mcfred and rashford every game. McFreds passing isnt good enough for this system, so I am hoping that he buys at least one, but really we need 2 midfielders in the Jan transfer window. VDB looks a busted flush and more than likely leave. Matic is too old.
 
Talks about controlling a game but picks McFred who are universally known as one of the worst pairings in the league, no matter what system you play if you lose the midfield battle you’re going to struggle yet these 2 play every week.

But he didn't buy Ronaldo. And he didn't appoint Rangnick. If he helped to bring Ronaldo back and the board said "yes that's the right move" then it's their responsibility to then try to make the transfer work by putting the right system, right coaches etc to get the best out of the squad they've assembled. With our board it's always wait until it's too late then jerk your knee so hard you land on your head. That's the problem and that isn't on Fergie particularly, end of the day he's long retired for the most part.

.But at least his team could score a goal or two with a moment of magic. Ralf has actually killed all our attacks. We have created virtually nothing in three games v Palace Norwich and Newcastle. Thats two of the worst teams in the league and a midtable Palace side. When we come up against a decent team we are going to lose. Id fancy Burley to get at least a point and Wolves to probably beat us. We don't even have the moments of individual brilliance to bail us out anymore.
 
At least he says things have to improve. Under Ole it was always "Fantastickkkkk" every time.

Hopefully a much better performance on Thursday.

Ronaldo in 2021 is nowhere near 1st or 2nd best player in the world.

He's probably a top 10 player in the world more accurately.
 
From what I have seen so far we are going to be playing Thursday night football next season.

Will Ten Hag or Poch fancy that?

I liked the glimpses against Palace, however last two games is worrying to say the least

Happened numerous times under Ole this season too.

We literally got battered in every single game bar 2-3 under Ole this season.

Let's not rewrite history now. And let's also not rewrite history that prior to signing CR7, we were this fantastic free-flowing attacking side that I've seen people in spades proclaim on here.

We were always an inconsistent side under Ole.

This season though? We were fecking awful under Ole. Worse than anything Jose, Van Gaal or Moyes churned up. Opposition fans were begging for him to stay and they were signing 'Ole's at the wheel' mocking the club.

We've been poor under Ralf, but it's 3 games in.

Besides, he's only an interim manager. 99% - he won't be the permanent manager next season.
 
The thing I’m surprised at is the total lack of pressing. I thought it was a cornerstone of his philosophy, but we just sat off Newcastle when they had the ball today

I'm inclined to give Ralf the benefit of the doubt on this one, and say its more likely our players just couldn't be arsed today. They turn it on when it suits them (normally when we go behind)

I mean, obviously what we've seen so far from his team isn't good enough, which Rangnick would also agree with, but I feel confident in the direction the club's taken by going for a guy who has a clear idea of what type of football he wants to play and has shown that he can implement it (given time) multiple times over, whether it be in a managerial or a directorial capacity.

Just up to the club to actually stick to this and back him with the transfer targets he picks out. Our players, despite on paper being talented, have lots of fundamental deficiencies (basic passing and moving, receiving the ball (on the half-turn), fitness) stemming from years of poor coaching, but I think we're already seeing an increased willingness to play passes between the lines and progressing play through the middle of the park, even if the execution is not there yet. To expect a managerial bounce similar to the one we saw under Ole, where we had technically pretty proficient players who were mentally drained, was not likely IMO. I thought we'd see more coordinated pressing at this stage if I'm to complain about something, but it's hard to tell what the focus on the training pitch has been over the past weeks with the training ground being closed and fitness obviously being more of a pre-season thing rather than something you'd be able to work on during the festive season.
 
At least he isnt making excuses in his post match interview. he was basically asked about Covid and he said it didnt effect the game. It was our lack of physicality and enerny and control.

Next two games are home games and i think we will play better.

The away games will be a struggle all season in my opinion.

We have sooooo many fantastic football players in our squad. But, we won't be competitive until the club starts buying players for a team rather than just big names. Hopefully Ralf can help convince Ed's successor of just that.

Until that happens, just lower your expectations. I know it's cliche, but today you've seen a Vauxhall built with Vauxhall parts only, earn a point against a Ferrari built with Lamborghini, Lada and MG parts. Until we have a team, we won't win shit.

We can't really complain. We're a sub top team.

Stop hatin' on the manager please.
 
Whatever new manager comes in will struggle as well unless there is a big overhaul. No manager is going to challenge for anything with average crap like Fred and McTominay in midfield. We also have 4 fullbacks whom are all pretty much useless going forward. And then you have attackers like Rashford who's also a completely average player.

Signings and outgoings will decide how things will go for whoever comes in.

Too many mediocre players in this team and not enough quality.

I am not going to wash my hands of him after only being here 5 mins, however made a huge mistake not sacking Ole earlier and appointing Conte.

I liked some of the pressing and taking the ball in the second half but we haven't looked solid since first half against Palace.
 
Ralf is there to teach Gegenpress, get rid of players who can't and buy a couple who can. That way when Poch or ETH arrive in summer they will look good. Anything else is a bonus.

We have such low standards for that to be considered a good performance honestly. Barely created a chance against a bottom half team at home.

People get overexcited every time we don't get torn apart on the counter.
 
The thing that frustrated me the most was the simple passes they kept messing up. It invited most of the pressure onto the back line it was crazy. We have away possession far too cheaply and it allowed Newcastle to get at us with ease. The scary part is, it wasn’t just one player doing it, the whole team were at it. Maguire set the tone in the first minute or 2 followed by Varane for the goal. Rashford with a simple ball out for a counter attack from the Newcastle corner as well. Even when sancho came on he was at it as well
We didn’t press as a team and only one or two players, we need it to be a Joint effort for it to be successful but just didn’t see that tonight.

How we escaped with a point and 70% possession is mind blowing. Cavani should have buried that chance when Telles crossed.

RR wasnt afraid to make changea at half time when it clearly wasn’t working and the subs changed the game for us and we played better. Too much in fighting amongst the players is another concern. Again another simple pass to Telles from Cavani and he left it to go for a throw. Cavani then proceeds to have a pop at Telles and Telles ignoring him and turning his back and walking off.
Some deep rooted problems at the club and can’t quite put my finger on what the main issue is.
 
Everyone can do a good talk. Where they fail is at executing them.

So, all the talk about I trust Ralf based on 3 or 4 games was just laughable at best.

But of course give him more time but playing Rashford as a wide 10 with defensive responsibility would not prove success though.
 
Couple of games in and people are ready to hang him. What do they realistically expect from a new manager? Back to back wins with City'ish scores? This squad does not have the mentality, fitness, dedication and overall quality to do such things on short notice. Give the man some time for christ sake
