Ralf Rangnick | ex-interim manager | does anyone rate him?

I underestimated us. I thought it might have taken to about mid January before supporters started to turn on him

One thing that stands out to me as an issue is the positioning of our fullbacks. I saw Dalot and Telles tucked in an awful lot tonight and the two no 10's playing in the wider areas. Surely that should be the other way around?

Also there's an issue with Bruno. He has struggled this season under Solksjaer and now Rangnick. In this instance he looks genuinely hesistant over what it is he's supposed to be doing.
Yep, Bruno looks confused as f*ck out there.

Our last 2 games under RR have been terrible, but it's just 2 games compared to almost half a season's worth of embarrassing performances under Ole.

The idea that Ole was doing a good job is farcical.

At the same time though, this was as bad of a defensive performance as we have seen this year. Newcastle were just not clinical with their chances. Goes to show that there are other issues at play than just the manager.

Not looking good. Even we conceded one goal, there is no reason not to score 2 goals. Newcastle xGA before this match this month were above 10 in their last 5 matches which the worst one. And we can't score 2 goals against xGA 10 in 5 matches. May be Carrick being caretaker manager is a better option or the obvious better option is if we just hire Conte, Poch, Ten Hag as permanent one.

It’s the players and was under Ole too.

We’ve entrusted the completely wrong kind of players over and over. Cavani James Fred Bruno Herrera, we need more players with industry to make things happen for the more skilful ones. The balance is all wrong. We are still carrying far too many prima donnas. Getting out fought every second week is no fun.

Too early to say.

Massive teething issues as this is the worst we've been in basic passing of the ball. I think by trying to play vertically and with a higher tempo it is creating some serious issues. Every time you hear RR that's what he wants in possession. One problem in that we seem to lack technical ability to pull it off and therefore it's breaking down, and two it is a massive adjustment.

Maybe we played zombie, slow passing for a reason? It hid some of the shortcomings, or maybe the players naturally did it because that's what they felt capable of.

Then you have the out of possession side of things. That isn't working well at the moment. Either they're not buying in or they have no clue how to do it physically or mentally and therefore it could take some time.

Pretty hot take. Way too important for either of the other Rangnick threads.

Ignore them, they have zero ball knowledge :smirk:

It hasn't been a good start. He has a very easy opening run of games, but also quite a hectic period and /or covid disruptions etc getting in the way of what is most important - time on the training pitch. In a way I think his job would be easier if he had a thinner squad, as he seems like he still have to try and experiment, when he actually should just play one team until they get a handle on what he is trying to do. Has an uphill battle to get the job permanently, we are very close to 4th place with a far superior squad to our competitors, and he will be expected to get fourth.

I’m still fully backing him but games like Norwich and Newcastle (bottom of the league whipping boys) totally outplaying us isn’t going to afford anybody time here.

People were against Ole from the moment he arrived, so it won’t be any different with Ralf.

Like I say, I’m backing him like I do with all managers until it’s clear they are going backwards, but these performances are a worry.

Not sure if it's meant for him, but this group is shockingly poor at pressing and quick passage of play. Sure RR sees what's wrong here. We need to leave him alone, this won't be fixed in a couple of weeks

gotta be honest I was expecting more of a bounce than this (in effort if nothing else)

but happy to wait and give the lad some time

what other option do we have?

Yet we beat Newcastle 4-1 at OT under Ole.

I think by the looks of things he's put some good focus on the central midfielders, particularly trying to make their passing more progressive, and De Gea is still playing well, but I don't see any clear idea of how we're supposed to be playing out there from anyone else in the team. Pass sideways a few times very slowly and sloppily, get pushed back to the centre halves, hoof it long.

This direct German style of football only seems to work when you play with tempo and yet everyone is strolling around, moving both themselves and the ball at a snail's pace, and what's more nobody seems particularly worried about it. Surely the plan cannot be to play with a glacial tempo and rely on Maguire to turn into Paul Scholes with the ball? If it is the plan then Rangnick is appalling tactically, and if it isn't then what are we going to do about it? It seems to be getting worse rather than better.
Yeah his crap. After 2 weeks we should be playing like prime Barca by now have already won the league and CL.

He's been here for barely 3 weeks, and we had a COVID outbreak in between which disrupted what I assume are many training sessions.

He talks a good game, and is saying all the right things. And, we have to follow these modern ideas. But, it's going to take more time. Besides, he's an interim manager because our board didn't do the obvious and sack Ole long before he was actually fired. So, problems are amplified as we are lot further adrift and there is a huge fixture pile up.

We’ve got some good players to show for it but they’re not system players.

Who are those players? Players who will win us things under the right set up. Besides our young players, I wouldn't blink an eye at anyone else we sell.

Really weird that we can play pretty much a perfect pressing style for 30 minutes after one training session, before turning back to shit Ole ball for the next 3 weeks.

Come on.... Are people really turning on Rangnick already?

Ok the performance was shocking but we had those kind of performances under Ole many times this season.

Seeing the post match reaction it is clear Rangnick doesn't accept that kind of performance and I'm sure heads will roll and some players will get dropped for the next game.

The style of play Rangnick wants can't be drilled overnight and will take time to implement.

I think we need to get real. We've been shocking most of the season. We've got a team coming back from a COVID outbreak and the manager has been here 5 minutes. He hasn't lost BTW...

Let's give it a little bit of time before we throw our toys out of the pram.

We've just been played off the park Vs Norwich and Newcastle. We got 4 PTS but didn't really deserve any.

This isn't a new manager bounce. It's an absolute mess. He's still picking all the same players who everyone wanted dropped.

Full backs getting forward. Passing between lines using quick one-twos and drilled passes into one player who sets it for another. Centre backs given a more creative role and encourage to switch play.

You can see what he's trying to work towards. It's just that it's not clicking yet, but that's no surprise this early on.

Well Bruno, Ronaldo and Sancho aren’t bad players but we need more balance. Our weak areas are super weak so it doesn’t matter where we’re good.

Rangnick will bollock the players publicly and privately. That is the difference. Solskjaer would've said we fought well, got the equaliser and had good chances to win it. Rangnick won't settle for this mediocrity. Sure, there's questions over tactics but he's got a 6 month job to find out who will work for the club and who needs shipping on.

You don't get a consistency in pressing in 2 weeks. Perhaps we will see a much better performance at home on Thursday.

I know it takes time to fully implement the style he wants it will probably months even but I just find it strange how we pressed really well and looked like a well drilled unit in his first game. You’d think we’d build on that the more time spent on the training ground i know it’s been disrupted but we seem to have abandoned a lot which we showed against Palace and have reverted back to the shite we witnessed at the end of Ole’s reign. Ralf needs to put a rocket up these players arses and fast.
