Ewan Sharp to be appointed Ralf's assistant coach. Ex Toronto FC and currently at Lokomotiv Moscow.

The Toronto Sun once described how Sharp played an important role in "opposition scouting, match planning, in match and post-match analysis. He also assisted the scouting department in identification and recruitment".

What I'm sure they'll be doing is team and individual film sessions. During the initital lockdown in Dubai, at Al-Nasr I had to create videos to show all the aspects the coach wanted to team to implement and some he wanted the team to stop doing, then player by player(very hard to do) create individual videos for each player to study of their own play to identify their weak points and strong points. For almost 2 months this is all we did. I'm sure the players are doing the same now.

We had a video analyst under LVG (Max Reckers) who was said to be very good at his job. But our players at the time didn't take too well to him, because he reportedly only picked out their flaws. Max Reckers is currently working with ten Hag at Ajax and doing really well by all accounts.

Too many of our players seem to be a little too comfortable at the club imo, and that needs to change. The below is the link to the Max Reckers story, about the players not being happy with him 'only highlighting their bad points'.

Great that that same Carrick was our assistant coach for so many years.

It makes so much sense, doesn't it? I wouldn't be surprised if Carrick was the leaker in the LvG and Mou eras.

Just out of interest- does anyone know if Rangnick has ever played a false 9 before?

It's something I've been wanting to see at United for sometime since we have been constantly using inverted forward like players for ages.

Bruno will make a perfect false 9
But there is no reason to experiment that.

I do wonder how a lot of our players would have coped under a manager like Pep who rabidly demands perfection and his way in all areas.

This is part of the reason why I don't think too much will ultimately change during the Rangnick era. Those players have too much power and are more than happy to just phone it in at times.

Maybe that’s because they could only devote so much time to this aspect of training and it’s more important to know what your doing wrong so you can correct it. These guys are not 10 year olds and don’t need participation ribbons.

We are being loaded with MLS coaches. Wondering if we are trying to emulate NewYork RedBulls.

Nah we're just finding the only people who'll be willing to leave their job for a possible 6 month stint. The very nature of the role stops high profile hires from coming.

Yeah pretty much. So long as we get coaches who are best placed to relay Rangnick's instructions to the players then I'm fine with it. I'm assuming the next permanent manager will bring in his own staff anyway.

I have seen this mentioned for a few weeks now and I'm a bit lost. Since when people closely follow the assistant coach market and since when people know accurately what a high profile assistant is?

It’s feckin crazy isn’t it. How about just growing a pair? That guys job was to analyze weakness to improve you. It was about making you a better player. Surely any player would appreciate that?

I totally agree and it feels like a group of players dictated managers time span here in last 8 years. I think we should give Ralf full control to clean it up and install a proper system with right set of players.

Having owners where not winning tittle is OK is another drawabck as it reflects on the pitch too. If the owners are not that ambitious then who will be ?

Not his biggest fan, far from it, but wish him luck.

Too much negativity and not enough also showing their strengths and what they need to continue doing is not going to be the basis of a good relationship. Doesn't matter the profession.

This could have been a learning experience for the video analyst. People skills. Players have bigger egos than the average person and sometimes you have to boost it for them to take on board what you're saying.

It's a good point, and it also improves the quality of the analysis and makes it easier to follow it when it is not presented as "stop doing this" but instead it shows "you are bad at doing A, you are good at doing B, so do more B instead of A". Showing the players better alternatives that they know they can actually do should be the key part of such analysis, if that isn't given it is no wonder players are unhappy.

Yeah, I get the balance. Some people are better at it than others. But as others have said, maybe his specific job was to focus on weaknesses and improve them. If it's phrased like that, I don't see the problem. Just another person for poorly performing players to blame instead of themselves. Hopefully, Ralf and his team will instill a bit more steel in this team, something that's severely lacking in my opinion. Still getting over the video that went around of Maguire trying to rouse the troops with his Churchillian claps. When you look at what we were, we were absolutely men. This lot are a bunch of boys in comparison.

Ralf has now got all his own people around him…..nothing left from previous regime now so no excuses now for significantly better performances and a proper structure and pattern.

next - deadwood removal

Phelan & Ramsey are still there.

But RR brought in 3 people with him, a coach, a psychologist who doubles as a coach, and a video analyst, that's quite a good number of new faces and hopefully they can bring fresh ideas to this squad

but that's not really the point. Whether or not these people know who the established names are it's really just common sense to deduce the established ones or most decorated, experienced or qualified backroom staff would be difficult to convince to join under temporary conditions. Even our interim manager search had a shortage of options for the exact reason.

Whether or not they know who's high or low profile it's still a very safe generalization to read into our situation. It's a thought process any human being would follow given the stipulated conditions, a very very safe generalization. They aren't exactly wrong for pointing it out.

Again the issue is with the notion of "established ones or most decorated", since when assistant coaches move that way at senior level? Surely everyone on this forum realize that it's not actually a thing and that assistant coaches are entirely linked to a manager or to the structure of a club, they are not established or decorated on their own. Also the point could make some sense if we were talking about a rational and open market of assistant coaches but it's not the case and has never been, people are applying a logic that has no reality. There isn't actually a market of assistant coaches, the system is built around personal circles and who is or isn't in the circle of a manager/director of Football and assistant coaches absolutely follow managers even on short term contracts.

I was ignoring Phelan as he didn't do any coaching as he said......in fact not sure what he is doing?

Won't mention any particular names as I'd only be speculating, but these are certainly sentiments I share. There's a demeanour and way certain players have conducted themselves when selected in the starting line up that made me think they couldn't care less how they perform. I realise I'm veering dangerously close to "body language expert" here but to me it doesn't look very subtle. I think we may end up needing a clear out of supposed "star" players in the not too distant future.

So you don't believe that the pool of experienced backroom candidates available to us is limited by the job being interim and midseason? You don't think the team he can put together might be affected by limiting factors? If you do then the difference is not really worth debating.

edit Even his own assistant from his club refused to follow him to take a promotion.

Fellow acclaimed coach Lars Kornetka is a tried and tested partner of the 63-year-old's but has swerved the opportunity to join the Red Devils by accepting a promotion at his current club.

It's also really just common deduction that active coaches whether within those old circles or an open market are currently in employment they aren't willing to give up for an interim gig. Again, is this thing really worth taking issue with? Seems like a total non-issue.

When you look at it, what Ralf is doing is similar to what Moyes did when he took over, but with the opposite intention. Moyes dismantled a winning backroom team to bring in his own men, whereas Ralf slowly is replacing a somewhat “failed” team with his men (although Carrick and Mckenna left at their own terms). Hopefully the results end up opposite to Moyesy’s tenure!!

Think he's there as a guy the players can talk to, sort things out for them in their personal and professional lives etc

The good cop to the managers bad cop so to speak.

No I definitely believe that the timing of his appointment affected the availability of Rangnicks favored options. My point is that these favored options shouldn't be described as established or high profile because it makes little sense. I bolded the high profile part for a reason and it is because I have seen an increased amount of people use that term without being able to qualify it or even use it in the context of Football.
