I fancy he wants a move back down to London but if there's any chance we could sign him then we should. Quality player.

Your over confident stature in the Vidal debacle, I confided in you and you let me down. ;)

Sorry about that. I really believed in it. I remember when Conte resigned how happy I was. :D

Wasnt he an United supporter? April fools aside he should really come to his favorite club. :D

He's going to end

That would be hilarious. Can you imagine the meltdown on RAWK?

It really serves Rogers right for trying to massively underpay somebody purely on the grounds of age. 'Hoisted by his own petard' is the phrase that springs to mind.

The bill to buy out the remaining two years of his contract and leave on a free is £3 million. 10 weeks of Rooney wages.

Not if he wants to play for anyone of any note. I'm pretty sure the bigger clubs agreed they wouldn't sign players under these circumstances.

Bet they do. Such an agreement would be illegal by the way.

It wouldn't. It's a contract law created by the European Court of Arbitration. All the big clubs agreed they would not sign any player who has bought out his contract like this. Hence why it has never been used.

I think it would be a criminal breach of the Enterprise Act, which bans cartels from manipulating markets. Football players are a market. The Premier League is clearly a cartel. This would constitute fixing prices.

"In the UK, the Act introduced the "cartel offence", whereby individuals who are involved in hardcore cartels may be liable to criminal sanctions, including imprisonment for up to five years and/or unlimited personal fines. The criminal sanctions under the Act apply only to those individuals who set up and maintain hardcore cartels i.e. agreements between competitors to fix prices, share markets, limit production, and rig bids (horizontal agreements). The offence is committed regardless of whether the agreement in question is implemented or not."

And yet despite this rule being in place for many years it's never been done by anyone of note. Why do you think that is?

Because generally it's not worth it unless the player is underpaid, and because it makes you very unpopular with the fans. Rooney threatened it a couple of years ago.

And, as you say, because the clubs by and large don't want to use that rule since by and large it's not in their interests. But if a prime piece of real estate like Sterling is available on the cheap, I think someone will hold their nose and press buy. He's worth £30 million on the open market at least, even with a £200,000 wage bill. And he's home grown. Pretty tempting if you're Chelsea or Manchester City.

£110k p/w is underpaying a potentially great player? :wenger:

It would begin a free for all that those clubs don't want. They aren't investing multi millions in players to be under the threat of losing them for a fraction of their value. This is the only thing not making it worth their while. There is plenty in it for the player if clubs were willing to let it happen. When did Rooney threaten it?

Is he stalling to see if they make top 4?
Could be a possibility. While Pool still have a chance at CL this season, if they do miss out this season can see it be very hard for them getting back in let again let alone stay in there consistently.

I think it would be great if we could get this guy, even if he will be from coming from Loserpool, I get the impression he doesn't like it there anyway. I know a lot of people think he is overrated but I honestly think he could be up there with some of the best over the next few years if given the right guidance. He is so tricky, pacey and skillful it is incredibly hard to stop when he is on form. He reminds me of Hazard, he is not at his level yet but he is younger and quicker and could easily develop to be the same level or better.

I am not sure if would come here though, he is a London boy and I see him wanting to go back to London and play for a London club if he has the choice between us and and say Chelsea/Arsenal I think he would choose them.

Probably being biased but I see this guy being one injury away from being the new Wlacott, Lennon or Downing.

Sorry I should clarify that Rooney never threatened to do it overtly. It was heavily circulated in the papers with references to his "camp." Which is a different matter, I agree.

You have a point about the clubs. But if Sterling is not threatening this, why else would he hold out on a contract that has two and a half years to run and pays peanuts. In my humble opinion, he's planning a Webster.

They pay him £30,000 p/w. That's nothing for a regular first teamer in a champions league side, let alone their best player.

But the offer is/was £110k p/w. If that's not enough, then I've no sympathy. He deserves more than 30k, that much in beyond doubt, but if he's only after more money than the £110k offered then he can take those wage demands to an oil club in exchange for a hefty transfer fee.

I'd be curious to see what'd happen if he did buy out his contract and joined United, though... Hilariously sad. So bad I think I'd laugh :wenger:

I can see why you think that. I don't think any of them ever showed the same ability as Sterling though. Even when Walcott scored that hat rick against Croatia etc I still thought all he had was pace and nothing more, which was the same with Lennon. I do actually think Sterling has much more to his game than all of these players.

Doubt much will come out of this though.

For any number of reasons not likely to be the Webster Ruling. It won't happen.

What did it say?

Just that he's not a "money-grabbing 20-year-old" and that he wants to be seen as a kid who loves to play football. BBC meant to be showing the releasing the rest of the interview later today.
