Liverpool should do the smart thing and just sit tight, Man City are clearly desperate for him and will eventually come around.
That's the thing, don't think City are smart, They don't have to be desperate, they can meet the home grown rule by replacing trash with trash. Liverpool need the money from the Sterling sale, especially with a player that is so unhappy and with fans on his back.

Do we? We've spent around... *Taps head* £45-50m so far with £5m+ of players out. £40m netspend is in line with what we've spent in the last four years, and with the improved TV money, and reduced wages for getting rid of Johnson & Gerrard, I don't think we're going to go bankrupt if we were to keep him.

We do need the money for a striker, though!

I think we're doing the right thing by sitting tight. If we can get £35-40m+ after the QPR cut, that will be pretty amazing.

Signing freebies would indicate that the club needs the money, otherwise they would have gone for better players.

Well you are planning on spending around 20-30M on Benteke, so that Sterling money may be needed.

Doesn't indicate that the club needs the money, but we've not gone for the top players, granted. We've just done sensible business so far.

True enough. It will be needed if we sign a £30m+ forward - But don't tell City that

 it's not the best kept secret though. I still expect you guys to hard ball them and get at least £45M.

Let's be honest, City aren't the most difficult club to extract a big fee from.

Agree. I wanted Clyne at United, Milner is an astute signing and Ings will be a surprise if given a chance.

I'm not sure if this is what you're arguing, but Clyne is the only one of those three I'd be anything other than displeased to see us signing. And even he was hardly a must-have.

City should do the smart thing and just sit tight, Liverpool won't keep him after what happened. And if they keep him, they lose a squad spot, his wages for a year any any chance of fleecing him for over 35MM Pounds.

His wages are still £35k p/w, so paying those isn't really an issue, and as I've said earlier, we're not in financial trouble if the window ends as-is. The only risk would be Raheem buying out his own contract, but I cannot see that happening.

I still think we're in the driving seat here. Up the price, or go away.

Just mentioned that City would be smart to just sit tight and Liverpool will eventually cave in. As for the players i mentioned, Milner and Ings are decent enough signings, but i would not sign them for United. Clyne is a player i rate very highly and should have signed, especially for the price he went for. A lot of people are basing their opinion on him after watching the England game against Italy. I've kept an eye on him and Schneiderlin for a couple of years and always have them in my ideal lineups for United.

Clyne was reasonably solid at Southampton, in a team with a very defensive set up. At Liverpool he'll be asked to contribute a lot more in the final third, and will have to improve on his whopping zero assists from last season. He looked average in his limited role, and being asked to do more at 'pool, I fully expect him to be exposed.

Danny Mills mk.II

He could do that?
Would it not be relatively cheap to buy it out if hes only on 35k a week?
I presume he'll be sold tbh. Wouldn't be surprised if they've basically agreed a deal and liverpool have been spending some of the money recently

Apparently players can buy out their own contract, but it's only been done like once during the PL era. I can't remember the name of the rule, but it is a possibility... Not one I can see happening, though. Imagine the backlash?

He will be sold if the right offer comes in, like Suarez in summer 2013. Very similar situation there... Suarez had 2 years left on his contract, we wouldn't take a lower offer than his valuation, he stayed, signed a new contract in the winter, sold him for £65-75m the summer after. That's a risk, not just because of the buyout rule, but also because of the potential of them not signing an improved contract. But it's not as much of a sensible risk, in my opinion... Why risk losing £20m for Sterling? He's not Suarez level.

We'll see. I think we'll get a £40m+ (£32m+ after cut) pretty easily from City.

Despicable behavior from a professional. As long as you are getting paid, you need to fulfill all your duties as a player (since you signed the contract in the first place).

I can never side with a player with such an attitude.

Yes, legally but there is a gentlemen's agreement amongst the top european clubs to never sign players from each other who have done so

From the Echo, sources:

The club's position is that until an acceptable offer comes in, from City or elsewhere, then he is a Liverpool player and expected to honour his contract and commitments to his employers - in other words, he's expected to go on the tour.

I suspect most of the story is bullshit.

Ok, now that you mention it, I can very well see the papers cooking something up.

Although it's funny that this is happening to Liverpool, but this is heights of ungratefulness from Sterling (if true). It is ok to look for greener pastures but not in such an classless way and certainly not by alienating the club and the fans that made him.

Sterling is not even worth 30mn with this attitude of his. What if he starts throwing tantrums and stops playing for City too. He scored 7 goals in 34 pl appearances last season. He is absolute gobshite for the value of 50mn. I am glad Chelsea are staying away.

It's hilarious because it's happening to Liverpool, but take off the United shades and you have to think this kid is being a bellend of biblical proportions.

He has refused to be on the tour. He is digging a hole right beneath his feet thinking that City will come up with a ladder that would get him ouf of it.
If City says feck all, then his position will be hilarious.

In all this what I find funny is that Sterling thinks he is really a 50M kinda player :)

I assume part of these tantrums are to force a move to City. They will see this as him being committed to joining them and pushing it through any way he can. Similar to how Berbatov pushed through the transfer to us.

Its Liverpool and I should laugh ( and I'm laughing ) but on the other hand his behaviour is attrocious and totally disrespectful.
He thinks he'll get a good deal and future club will forget this kind of behaviour of his?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's Liverpool themselves leaking this. They've gone into full salt-the-earth mode. City will still be interested I'm sure, but it'll make the club look heroic for getting rid of him.

Would pool sell to United if United made an offer?

What a runt. He's gonna be a great signing for City though...
