Raheem Sterling | Signs for Man City for £49,000,000

Exactly, we have no-one to replace Coutinho. For Sterling's immediate replacement, Ibe has just signed a new £35k a week contract.

£40m is just the opening (rumoured) bid right? I can see us only dealing with clubs that have players we want as straight cash means QPR get a lot of it.

City have a few (Dzeko, Zabaletta mainly + cash), Bayern have a few (Gotze, or whomever else wants to come to the PL). To convince these players to 'take the step down to Liverpool' will be these clubs' problem not ours. We're only holding the fishing rod with the bait on.

Its time clubs and fans adapt to the realities of football. The times of the Paul Scholes and the Ryan Giggs type of players (ie top quality players who would rather earn less to the stick to the club they love rather than leave) are gone and had been gone for quite some time (Scholes and Giggs were exceptions to the rule). Players are just employees now who would look around and see if anyone can offer them a better deal and would only be 'servants of the club' if they have no choice. Hence why we need to stop being so emotional around players and always do what is good for the club. We're a top quality club (not a retiring home for players or a hospital for injury prone one) and our aim is to win honors on a regular basis at all cost. If we stop focusing on that aim than rest assured that players will leave, less top players will join the club and we will go in decline.

I mostly agree but Giggs and Scholes stayed because United paid them well and was at the top of European football, their 'love' for the club has never been tested.

Dumbstar really lives up to the delusional scouse supporter tag.

Well not according to Moratti, an avid Inter fan and former owner with sympathies towards Manchester United. Moratti became Inter's owner back in the mid nineties promising to import United's flair, magic and talent to Inter. Having secured Paul Ince who was an instant success at Inter he hoped to use his influence to lure Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes at the club. For Ryan Giggs he offered a blank cheque (I know its dramatic but Moratti is that sort of person) only for the player to turn it down. Regarding Paul Scholes he inquired who his agent was only to be sent to SAF. It was evident that Scholes couldn't be lured to another club.

Yeah, totally agreed. Not to say that they definitely wouldn't have stayed if, for example, United went into turmoil and Sir Alex was sacked or left, and we went through a period of changing managers and going nowhere (maybe they would have turned down moves) but their love wasn't tested too much, as you say.

They often get lumped into the ultra-loyal, "nothing-like-footballers-today" bracket (usually by United fans) and I think that's reaching.

You must be one of those "We need to get Klopp in!" Liverpool fans.

I know about Inter and they were inferior to United.

I don't think Inter Milan will be in for Sterling.

Oh they will, mark my words. They will ask for a 2 year loan followed by a full payment of half a bag of potatoes. The potatoes may be negotiable closer to the end of the loan.

Its how Italian teams roll.

You've got enough potatoes knocking around from last summers window.

Just move your eyes to the left of the screen, jusssst a little bit.
Sorry, should have phrased that differently. Judging by Zabaleta and Gotze being mentioned, you must be one of those Liverpool fans who believes you'd stand a hope in hell of landing Klopp, if you wanted him. And I've heard plenty.

Financially they certainly were not. They were the top dogs in terms of salaries/fees and their plan was pretty ambitious. Only later would come that Moratti was an idiot and that the league was rigged by Juventus.

We're talking about a time when United couldn't even afford to pay Batistuta's salary. We were able to sign Stam only because he removed the 10% signing on fee owed to him in his contract.

But you are only taking money into account, I'm taking everything. United had arguably better players, a better coach and was more competitive, on top of that it was their home. Inter only had money.

Edit: If it was Juventus who came for Giggs it would have been another story.

Were we really in that great position though?

a- SAF arguments with Edwards were well known. A year or two before Moratti came to scene, SAF was close to leave the club because he was being paid peanuts when compared to Graham at Arsenal. Edwards did relented mostly thanks to Graham who was kind enough to fax his own contract to SAF to use it as proof to his claim. However the club was world renowned for being skint and bringing players from top leagues was impossible for us (Batistuta didn't move to United because we couldnt even afford his salary at Fiorentina! In few words we expected him to accept a pay cut)

b- The team was passing from what I believe to be SAF's first real test. Hughes, Ince and Kanchelskis had just left the club (the former two because of an open revolt against the manager) and we weren't able to bring in the only replacement SAF wanted (Darren Anderton, jeez the man always had a soft spot for sicknotes). That summer was a nightmare, Cole wasn't producing the goods as expected, we have just sold our most rated option on the right flank (Keith Gillespie) and that brilliant, typical British type of defender specimen (ie Colin Hendry) had just stripped us from a talent who was rated by Harrison himself to be the finest of the class of 92 (Ben Thornley). The media went on ballistic that summer, suggesting that we will end up 3rd or even 4th which triggered the famous 'you'll never win anything with kids' quote by Hansen.

Ryan Giggs was young and he was right in the middle of the media spot light back than. On one hand you had SAF who was hounding around him 'spoiling the fun' to keep him away from the spotlights. On the other hand you had Moratti who was offering him crazy money and using a player Giggsie may have looked up to (Paul Ince) to tempt him to Inter. Id say that's a hell of a mature decision Giggsie took back then.

Might have stood a decent outside chance if other big clubs weren't in the hunt too. As it happens only two are, Real and City. Klopp going to Madrid is going to kick off the cycle of City replacing Pellegrini with Ancelloti. And that's everyone done. We don't want Pellegrini over Rodgers.

God I hate young players who think that asking for 150k a week at 20/21 years old is reasonable. Largely anonymous in the big games this year so talk of wanting to win trophies is really cheap from him. Does he mean carried to trophies by those around him? It would be fantastic if the deal to this huge club falls through. Not the kind of man I'd want in our team.

Or maybe he knows Liverpool are not winning anything significant any time soon? Maybe he feels everyone telling him staying at Liverpool is what is best for his development doesn't really know what's best for him. Maybe he thinks Brendan using him as a wingback is stupid. Maybe he feels like Liverpool are stifling him. Maybe he wants to play in the CL. If clubs are interested in him who are at a higher level why the feck would he stay at Liverpool if he believes in his ability? I'm pretty sure City will be in for him at the very least. Who said he wants 150k?

"Apparently I am wrong for wanting to move to a bigger team because some people think I am not good enough. Well I believe in myself and want that move". If he doesn't deserve a move to a bigger team then he wont get one because no one will move for him.

Had Bayern signed him prior to this season what would people have said? How many would question Raheem? People may have questioned Bayern for signing him off one good season, but you couldn't blame Sterling for the move.

Similar to what Barca have now - its easy to be loyal to a highly successful club.

Juve were always interested and linked with Giggs. AC Milan as well. Giggs always had a strong reputation in Italy and was approached many times. this was during the time Utd were well down the queue of paying wages and all the talent heading to Italy. We weren't doing much in Europe and Ryan could easily have thought about a new challenge.
kind of like Pogba and. Juventus. He's winning titles and is about to play in the Cl final, although you can't claim his loyalty won't be tested this summer.

I'm surprised people are so willing to write off his good season as a flash in the pan as opposed to this season (after Liverpool as a team struggled and he was played in so many positions outside the one he excelled in). Put him in a slick, pacy team and i reckon he could easily get back on track.

Does anyone think Januzaj is finished after having an anonymous season?

This.

Many keep mentioning Paul Scholes as the crown jewel of SAF's team however in Italy Ryan Giggs was the man. He was virtually unstoppable against Italian sides. I remember a particular game against Juventus. SAF tried to play a mind game with Lippi by saying that Ryan Giggs was sick and wouldn't play. Lippi didn't fell to the bait and still took insurances by adding an extra defender as winger to double mark Giggs. Despite all efforts, Ryan was simply perfect in that game causing havoc in the Juventus defense.

After the game a much irritated Lippi told the journalist in a sarcastic way that Juventus should thank god that Giggs was 'sick' since god knows what he would have done if he was fully fit. That shows how rated Giggs was in Italy.

Juventus was the team to beat back then and Moratti hated their guts since they were able to win everything without spending the outrageous money other clubs spent. Their main strategy rested in their ability to build a solid side with largely unknown or promising players and their well organized defense was clear testament to that as it was built around solid defenders whom individually may not have been legendary status type of defenders in their own right but as a unit were rock solid. Giggs was meant to be not only a way for Moratti to break such defense but also a statement. 'We can buy the players who can humiliate that defense' sort of thing.

Technically good (apart from his finishing, that needs work), strong, hard worker, very quick, good movement. But nah he's shit now :wenger:.

150k is from Phil Thompson and leaked from Liverpool so you can bet its pretty close. Sounds like you have an agenda to drum on about but really Ronaldo and De Gea have used us as stepping stones so particularly in De Gea's case you could argue winning things is on his mind with us to.

Or Liverpool have tried to use the media to put fan pressure on the player, which is what prompted him to do the infamous interview (even though the interview was silly). The club have leaked all this info in order to pressue the player into signing, doesn't mean its actually true. Now I'm not saying it isn't all about the money, but just because the club leaked informtation, doesn't mean its fact.

Oh I know I'm just pretty confident its bang on the money. When the leaks were made to put pressure on by Liverpool I think that was their sole aim...not to tell lies to put pressure on and thus 100% guarantee he wouldnt sign because of said lies...the latter wouldnt make sense.

I see where you are coming from, however picture the scenario where the player had zero intention to sign a new contract regardless.
Doesn't matter if his agent asked for more money, because hes had a better offer from a better club, he was never signing, and especially now they didn't qualify for the UCL.
The leaks have obviously done what Liverpool wanted though, as people seem to be convinced hes leaving becuase of money, and hes not good enough to play for City or whoever (as if we're talking about Scott Sinclair)
Theres obviouly no chance hes staying now after those comments too.

I can see why Sterling would be annoyed at the army of scousers in the media lining up telling him to sign the new contract.

It's the same in every cult - the Elders don't like the youngsters leaving for the City.

I don't think Inter Milan will be in for Sterling.

How would any Italian club besides Juve afford his fee+wages? They are all trying to consolidate finances and some of the money has to go into infrastructure. I doubt they have a €100M package to waste on a 20 year old with a shaky off-pitch reputation, who´ll probably fit in nicely with the Italian footballing enviroment, who love the Bob Marley´s of the world. I can only see four clubs abroad financially: PSG, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Of these clubs Bayern Munich´s squad seems by far the best fit.

Pellegrini will still be managing City next season.

He is doing fine in a struggling team. Still very young. And all the "he is greedy" talk is (partly) made up by the media.
Liverpool offered a big new contract. He didnt take it. He wants more then money. CL and trophies. I take a player who wants to earn the fame and the big name.

He turned down a big contract from his own club.:rolleyes:
The media uses him for their "he is greedy" story. He cleary isnt. (BTW I never had any problem with a player wanting as much money as he can get, he and his family have only one career)
Whats even more  is old players starting coming out of woodwork to comment about how greedy said player is when they themselves were looking to get as much as they could in their day

Haha even though I think the papers are making this up but this should be fun, they won't sell to us but we should definitely test them by offering the highest

Utd making enquiries. Thanks guys, please help in any bidding war in any way you can. :)
