Rafael averaged the most tackles of all our players with 4 per game. Also the highest placing non-midfielder in terms of average passes per game at 51.3

Areas where he didnt rate quite so highly include interceptions and both the twins averaged 3 clearances a match behind all our other defensive options. Dont get that confused with aerial duels won though as Rafael won more often than Ferdinand. So I guess he just doesnt hook out crosses coming into the box often or something.

More likely they're caught 20-30 yards upfield when the crosses need clearing.

Anyone who watched the game able to give a snapshot of how Rafael performed today?

Word is he's signed a new contract until 2016.

If true that's fantastic news. His contract was going to expire in 2013 and there wasn't any news of negotiations to extend it yet so I was starting to get a bit worried.

Good.

Any source?

Sky Sports' twitter account tweeted a couple of hours ago that reports in Brazil indicated he was close to agreeing a new four-year contract.

Great to tie him down. Learned alot last season, think he will step up the the challenge much better this season. The talent was never in doubt, just he switched off a few too many times.

Exactly. When he's got his eyes on the prize Rafael is an awesome full back. Dare I say it one of the best in the Premier League.

Kagawa is our prime target. Hazard is just one of those special talents we should try to get if there's a chance. We tried and almost got him. No harm tho, we have Nani, Valencia and Young on the wings. Won't matter much. Not the first and won't be the last we miss out on. Shearer, Ronaldinho, etc..

This post could honestly have been made last Summer, the Summer before or even the Summer before. I just hope we're not saying it next Summer too.

He's only 21(22 next month).

Some people think they should all be like Messi. Ridiculous.

Well, the previous seasons he was unable to hold down a regular slot due to the likes of O'Shea and co still around. This season then he was hampered by injuries aswell as some poor form. He was out for about 10-12 weeks this season. when added up together. At the tender age of 21-22 he has alot to learn, but the ability is always there, just his frame of mind.

Exactly.

There is no doubt at all that Rafael is a special talent.

Even after injuries he has been very very promising.

Rafael pens new deal

Rafael has signed a new four-year deal which will see the Brazilian full-back stay at Old Trafford until the end of the 2015/16 season.

Rafael, 21, arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2008 and his performances for the first team have seen him called into the full Brazil squad.

Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted to have secured Rafael's services for a further four years and told ManUtd.com: “Rafael is one of the club’s brightest young prospects; he has no fear of playing and has great belief in himself.

"The boy has developed immensely since joining United, his energy and enthusiasm are a joy to watch. Rafael has all the attributes to become one of the best full-backs in the world and I am delighted he has signed a new contract.”

The man himself is just as pleased: “I am so happy to sign a new contract," Rafael told us. "I love playing for Manchester United, there is a great team spirit here and a real desire to win.

"My time here has been unbelievable; winning two league titles, a league cup and a Club World Cup has made me hungry for more trophies. I would like to thank Sir Alex for his belief in me and I would also like to thank the fans for their support.”

Edit: No, Caf time is wrong... five minutes late.

Brilliant news, agree with Damo, number 2 shirt please.

Good news. Now hopefully he stops getting injured and becomes our first choice right back

He will be, when we stop experimenting with the whole other team members in the right back position.

Great news!

Where does this leave Fabio, are they still joined at the hip & will they insist on staying together?

Also confirmed today is Fabio's loan to QPR.

Who'd of predicted that 3 years ago? Rafael was supposed to be the lesser talent...injuries are a b*tch.

I hope they both stay here through-out their 20s. Really good news.
