You do realise that this is a PS5 vs XSX not the PS5 thread? If that was posted on the PS5 thread you would be correct. People seem to think that the thread is only to throw shade of Xbox but at the moment compared to PlayStation, Xbox are killing it. PlayStation had the better launch but recently...
If I was to get a new console(I doubt I will) `it would be Xbox because there is no way I'm paying £70 for an exclusive game when you can get the other consoles exclusives for £10/month. Or how much they are charging for updated next gen games when Xbox are updating their games for free.

Great post.

The other console doesn’t have any exclusives.
Of course it does. The two companies are Sony and Microsoft. Microsoft has as many exclusives coming if not more than Sony do. The other thing is that a lot of Microsoft's exclusives they are often multiplayer or COOP that are continuously repayable while Sony's recent exclusives have been very short single-player games that impacts how much you can replay them.

I have an Xbox Game Pass but I play on PC but because I have Game Pass I am an Xbox or more importantly Microsoft subscriber.

They have been saying this for the past 20 years, quality exclusives is something Xbox have struggled with forever, it's only fair people are sceptical and look at them from afar until they actually produce them.

We are still waiting, if you are naïve enough to take it at face value after 10+ years of nothing that's on you.

I bet the average player who downloads them puts 10x as many hours into a Gears or Halo as they would into a GoW or TLoU and enjoy every minute of it because they are playing with their team. What makes that a bad experience? Because some bloke from IGN liked them less?

Ah right, Gears, Halo and Forza we have been repeating since forever, will you point me to the brand new IP's microsoft have developed in to an established game which are widely considered excellent.

I can give you Uncharted, Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, bloodborne, Returnal just off the top of my head.

If your happy playing the same games forever go wild, but i like people to take a gamble try something new push the envelope a little.

TLOU2, Spiderman, Returnal, and God of War are 25-30 hours.
Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, Days Gone, FFVIIR 40+ hours
Persona 5 100+ hours

Ratchet .. yeah about 15 hours but it is a platformer.

You are right though that MS are more focused on multiplayer/coop games than Sony, because they want people to stay subbed to Gamepass and that's a better way to do it than a single player game you can beat in under a month, but for people who really enjoy single player, story driven games, MS have been really crap so far. Really it just depends on what you want. If a great value service with lots of ok to decent games and remasters to play is what you want, go MS. If you want proper next gen, story driven single player, critically acclaimed games and are willing to pay the premium, go Sony

Bought Rachet and Returnal for 35 quid ;)

The other console doesn’t have any exclusives.
Great... (and most pertinent) post. You should post more.

There’s not a game as good as Returnal on Gamepass.

I haven't played Returnal but I'm sure there's many.

Flight Sim is great for a start. People here say how niche it is, but I reckon the numbers of players with it on gamepass and xbox will be pretty huge.

I wasn’t even saying that to be smart, I genuinely think Returnal is a phenomenal game. I know you said you don’t like to spend money on games anymore but that is one you should definitely check out.

I know. But you don't think there'll be a better game on gamepass? With all Bethesda back cat on there? Obviously likes of Flight Sim, Forza Horizons etc are fantastic but obviously very different.

I'm sure I'll get Returnal one day when it hits the £25 mark digitally. My other concern is just the general difficulty and that its not meant to be very forgiving. I've no shame in saying I'm a hold my hand type guy these days which is why I couldn't get into BOTW or Sea of Thieves (sorry Lambs)

But yknow, if people talk about offers or discounts to show value and discredit complaints about £70 price then 3 years of gamepass ultimate (so xbox, PC, and cloud) gameshared at £60 can't really be beaten.

For that £70 (I presume you meant 35 each) you could have got 3 years of gamepass ultimate and had change leftover.
 and play what? and don't say the flight sim. I'm one of the few that probably would have been interested in that even without the drought. Most of you wouldn't have I bet.

Nevertheless you need more, bigger and better.

He won't XBox peeps don't buy games anymore...

If Returnal went to gamepass it would certainly be one of the best games on there. I genuinely struggle to think of anything I’d rather play over it.

Nobody has ever denied GP is great value for money, especially when you can pick it up for a quid a month or whatever silly offers they’re doing atm. But equally I can Chuck £35 at PS Now for a 12 month subscription and have immediate access to a lot of great games. Obviously MS will put their first party games on GP from day one, but they can afford to haemorrhage money in a way Sony can’t.

Be interesting to see what happens with Gamepass in the long run by the publishers that aren't directly 1st party.

Hades for example just released on the last gen and next gen consoles 97% of actual sales are on the Sony platforms, now how much money are they going to have to keep chucking at these publishers if this becomes the norm.

I don't know the numbers they pay but it would be reasonable to presume its not near the actual sales of the game on the Sony platform.

People on here dismiss gamepass as nothing more than accessing a ton of tat all the time, to be fair.

Sony will do their equivalent subscription one day and drop exclusives day 1, and when they do it'll be equally huge and great.

Just from the past few weeks - Hades? The Ascent? And yes Flight Sim (which has been taking off (intended) with the more mainstream - no more niche than returnal..), which is brilliant.

There isn't a drought anymore. Gamepass users are getting multiple decent games every month that I am downloading and playing.

More bigger and better are coming. Xbox has got Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite to come this year. Both are shaping up to be brilliant games.

I don't know the numbers they pay but it would be reasonable to presume its not near the actual sales of the game on the Sony platform.

Why would it be reasonable to assume that? What if gamepass has 3x the players on Hades than on Playstation?

There are multiple models. Guaranteed income up front regardless of sales, or they can look to have some sort of fee based on number of players/downloads which could work out better for a confident dev that thinks they can get big numbers.

I agree it'll be interesting. There's not much point putting a game on Xbox if you're not a huge franchise and not on gamepass. Longer term MS will be putting more and more emphasis on their first party anyway of course, as they'll have the scale and frequency to do so.

That they have combined the PC and Xbox gdk toolkits means there's no point not putting it on there, mind. It's just incremental sales for minimal effort.

The recent games have been Miles Morales which is short, Ratchet which is short and Returnal which is short. As I said the recent games are short. Ever since the new console was released the new games have been short. Yes they have remastered some games that are longer.

Yes currently Xbox is not the home of single player and for the next 12 months we are not looking at a lot of single player games. Probably the first big one will be Star Field, then some time after Avowed, Fable and other single player games will follow but I still see multiplayer games being the staple of Xbox as it was long before Game Pass was ever dreamt of. Xbox was always a console to play with your friends.

The thing is if you look at gamer engagement FPS multiplayer games and sports games absolutely rule the roost. Yes IGN and the like will give high scores to 3rd person single player games but they don't draw half of the audience of a Fortnite CoD, Battlefield, FIFA, Madden or the like. Yes I'm deliberately naming games that are multiplat here.

Games pass is a service that does offer good single player games though I've played A Plague Tail a game that I would never have looked at if not for games pass and it was a great game. The same can be said for Hellblade, I played GreedFall because it was on games pass. I could carry on for ages but I wouldn't have played any of these games if I was expected to pay £70 for them. I probably wouldn't have played any of these games if they were not part of my subscription.

Hades is good I have it on PC. The Ascent looked interesting but it's just a co-op top down shooter. Won't be much on PS store in no time, I'll cop when it's on sale though due to the somewhat mixed impressions. When those bigger games that are coming actually come? That might be the time...

Educated guess for a game like hades (absolutely fantastic game) but its not a console seller/money spinner.

If it was a Battlefield/COD day 1 i'd agree that it would more then likely be a loss lead on Microsofts part.

Sorry but championing Flight simulator as a reason to own an xbox is grasping at straws.

I don't know if they track or reveal how long people keep games or uninstall them but at least 50% of people downloaded it flew around for a few days/hours and never played it again, yes people love a freebie so there gonna give it a try especially when there's a severe lack of games on all platforms.

The vast majority of people aren't or never were interested in microsoft flight simulator, spin it that gamepass introduces it to a new audience go ahead/

Random thought but would it be reasonable to think publishers also see Gamepass as a good marketing tool? I know Hades was already quite popular but any game being on Gamepass creates more buzz around it which could easily spur more people to buy it on other consoles. Maybe this is all factored into the business plan. Hmm. Hmm.

It's an experience more than an actual game in fairness but I'm sure there's people that will buy an Xbox for that experience alone. Especially over forking out for a high end PC to actually run it.

Not championing Flight Sim just dissing Returnal's sales figures.
Did well enough for them to get bought up by Sony, passed the test so to speak. I've put around 5 days into Returnal. I'll be coming back to it for years it's a game that's just fun to play, like their other stuff Resogun, Alienation...

Tell that to the millions of PlayStation 5 owners that haven't bothered with it.

The vast majority of people won't play Returnal but that doesn't stop it being a reason to own a PS5. If it's a quality experience and (for FS) you aren't interested in a gaming PC (which is literally 10s of millions of people) then great.

Nobody is saying to get it for Flight Sim alone. If you care that much, obviously you'd get a gaming PC. But it's one of many great quality experiences and from anecdotal evidence only, I'm surprised at the time a lot of people are putting into it.

Far more than have brought Returnal.

Well yeah but it is on a subscription service so has a much lower entry barrier.

I dunno. It was GOTY by many publications last year. And they do seem to spend money filling gaps in the portfolio that attract a different audience. Could see it having an impact on numbers on PC.

25m subscribers and the backing of MS gives them a lot of money to spend on licensing deals.

Truly. It's a great game to boot up before bed and just chill to with some music. As someone who struggles with sleep it's actually worked wonders.

But i could say Miles Morales has sold more copies then the entire number of series X in peoples hands, at least pick a fight you could win.
I did that's why I mentioned Returnal's sales figures and not Miles Morales'. Besides that's because Miles Morales is cross gen. What ever happened to generational exclusives and drawing a line under the old generation? One of Jim Ryan's big sales pitches. Did Returnal put an end to that?
I'll still say that I believe that there will be more total hours put into Halo Infinite than there will into Miles Morales.

I'm barely 'playing' it to be honest. Being lazy and dropping myself over locations with all the assists turned on just to check them out. So cool.

None of that disproves what I said though. It pretty much agrees with it. If you want quality, single player next gen experiences and are happy to pay for them, you're better with a ps5.

Apparently a lot of people do want that, contrary to what you're claiming above, going by sales.

That's like me comparing World of Warcraft hours played to Halo Infinite.

On those grounds Runescape is a better game then anything mentioned.

Well.... yeah... That's how it goes. Demon Souls didn't sell a massive amount either, still launched a whole sub-genre.

Puts you to sleep does it?

PlayStation will always sell well. It doesn't mean that it's the right choice for the person buying it. I think that on average less than 10% of people who brought a PlayStation 4 brought the exclusives. If that's true are the exclusives the real reason that people are buying them or that it's the console that their friends own and they want to play FIFA with them.

Xbox got arrogant last launch and it cost them a lot of good will but if people on a budget want loads of games to play games pass makes a PC or an Xbox the better deal, just loads of people don't realise that. Just saying that more people buy something doesn't make it better. There are 55 billion serving of Coke consumed every day. Does that mean that coke is good for you?

4/10 of the top selling games on ps4 were exclusives one of them being 2nd to GTA 5.

Fifa made the top 10 once and was 8th.
