So there is something the Cell processor can't do!

No way! The PS3 is so powerful that it made itself go back in time!!

mines the original big phatty and was working just fine yeserday.
not played it today though but I'm worried by this thread now

so what exactly happens when you switch it on?
am i best off leaving it until someone (weaste) says its fixed or should i try to use it? -i'm assuming you can just shut it down no harm done?
was hoping to play some fallout tonight, anyone know if that ones likely to be affected?

It seems that any games with trophy support are being affected, even offline, as it throws up an error about not being able to retrieve trophy information. Some older games are fine though.

Still, i've not turned mine on since this happened so i'll leave it off for now and keep an eye on this.

However the PS3 works out which year is a leap year obviously doesn't work quite right, probably not tested thoroughly.

Your OS date has been set to that, the system clock will still be on 29/02/2010. The OS clock is trying to calculate itself off that system clock, but it can't because it's not a valid date, so it throws a spazzer. So it seems anyway.

Some people are reporting that if you take the lithium battery out, and then stick it back in, everything starts working again. I can't confirm that though.

Think of it like the clock in your PC.

Alright, don't think I'll be messing around with it :nervous:

Will be interesting to see if it works after midnight or if we have to wait for a firmware update or something.

mine works!! it's ok. alls good :D

hopefully it's sorted out soon. I did get an error at first but tried again and it worked.

I've read about a few instances of fatties bought just prior to the release of the slimmies being ok. I got mine around this time but the thing is, i can't find any info on identifying if i've got the 'safe' model or not.

Any ideas anyone?

Striker10 - is yours a slim or fat version?

I suppose it is for whoever made that off the shelf chip.

surely if, as has been said, this is the same chip used in other devices that have had this problem in previous years, sony sould be feeling a liitle embarrased themselves for not seeing this coming.

I suppose that the question is, when would they have known about it, and was it even an issue with the particular revision of chip they were using?

sony have released an official statement, nothing new though

Sony has told 'fat' PS3 owners not to use their console - as they work on a solution to the 8001050F error within 24 hours.

An official statement distributed to CVG today reads:

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:
* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"
* Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours"

But surely this is the software proved by formal methods that someone was telling me doesn't have errors and is unhackable?

i suppose its difficult to say exactly whos at fault without knowing the full facts, but its sonys reputation that will be damaged in the mainstream market.

To be fair - and touch wood, I've never had an issue with any of my playstations until today and to be fair, what I went through with the 360, 24 hours without the Playstation through an error is nothing in comparison. Sony's reputation will not be damaged in my eyes. In comparison to Microsoft they are sheer angels.

If you can't live without your PS3 for one day.............I know that shouldnt be the case but its not like the end of the world.

I think that you shouldn't turn it on. I'm not turning mine off.

its all down to personal experience with companies as big as this, my 360 broke one weekend last year after 2 years of faithful service. sent it to microsoft on monday , got it back thursday morning with a free game aswell. not had any problems with my ps3 so far although ive hardly ever used it, dont use either that much anymore.

feck sake, I turned it on this morning to see if it was fixed. I guess I've lost all my data. Well not all of it, but all the data that I could possibly lose. :(
