So there is something the Cell processor can't do!

Why has the problem not come up before?
mines the original big phatty and was working just fine yeserday.
not played it today though but I'm worried by this thread now
so what exactly happens when you switch it on?
am i best off leaving it until someone (weaste) says its fixed or should i try to use it? -i'm assuming you can just shut it down no harm done?
was hoping to play some fallout tonight, anyone know if that ones likely to be affected?

Erm, because we never got to 29th Feb 2010 before.![]()
SonyHowever the PS3 works out which year is a leap year obviously doesn't work quite right, probably not tested thoroughly.
There hasnt been a 29th Feb 2010.
There wasnt a 29th Feb 2009 - so why didnt the same thing happen last year?

Because there is a hardware bug in this chip that handles the RTC that is taking 2010 to be a leap year.
Your OS date has been set to that, the system clock will still be on 29/02/2010. The OS clock is trying to calculate itself off that system clock, but it can't because it's not a valid date, so it throws a spazzer. So it seems anyway.
Some people are reporting that if you take the lithium battery out, and then stick it back in, everything starts working again. I can't confirm that though.
Think of it like the clock in your PC.
You can always count on programmers to overcomplicate things : The Evolution of a ProgrammerAs I've said, I can't understand it, the algorithm to work out a leap year is very simple, you just do modulo by 4, 100, and 400.
mine works!! it's ok. alls good
hopefully it's sorted out soon. I did get an error at first but tried again and it worked.
How embarrassing.
Will be interesting to see if it works after midnight or if we have to wait for a firmware update or something.
I suppose it is for whoever made that off the shelf chip.
surely if, as has been said, this is the same chip used in other devices that have had this problem in previous years, sony sould be feeling a liitle embarrased themselves for not seeing this coming.
Sony has told 'fat' PS3 owners not to use their console - as they work on a solution to the 8001050F error within 24 hours.
An official statement distributed to CVG today reads:
As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.
We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.
Errors include:
* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"
* Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.
As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

I suppose that the question is, when would they have known about it, and was it even an issue with the particular revision of chip they were using?

To be fair - and touch wood, I've never had an issue with any of my playstations until today and to be fair, what I went through with the 360, 24 hours without the Playstation through an error is nothing in comparison. Sony's reputation will not be damaged in my eyes. In comparison to Microsoft they are sheer angels.

Its their reputation that’s damaged.
