Excellent thread on some of the issues discussed in the last couple of days (I’ll forgive him the irritating use of “Karen”)
Right, I’ll preface this post by saying I didn’t read the entire twitter thread... but does anyone else see a problem with his dismissal of the significance of the higher rates of crime by black offenders?
Where’s the wisdom in minimising the significance of the fact that murder committed by a black offender occurs at double the rate of murder by a white offender? He says the numbers are “not of any significance as the numbers of actual offenders are so low” - but... of course they are so low. Most people aren’t murderers. That is not a revealing point. In that minority of offenders, though, it seems they are disproportionately and overwhelmingly black. That’s a troubling statistic and almost certainly points to wider sociocultural problems.
If he minimises the significance of black crime, due solely to the fact that black individuals are only “0.10% likely to be murderers” (compared to 0.05% for white individuals), couldn’t one similarly dismiss the significance of police brutality as it only occurs in a minuscule percentage of cases?
Just in case I have to say it, I am not minimising the significance of police brutality, nor am I suggesting the black community should look inward for a solution. I am, however, criticising his conclusions from the data, as I’m not sure they are particularly sound.
