Post-match discussion

Thu, 26 December 2024

Oh, let's be honest here. No one on this thread has a fecking clue how to fix this. It's not like the issue is one or two obvious, identifiable shortcomings, like a better central midfielder or a lack of stamina. Nothing to do but wait and hope.

Tuned out when Bruno got sent off so cannot comment really but up to that point we created nowt, that is what is killing us, even when we have control we don't score

I see people constantly saying we have a terrible squad, one of the worst in the league, and mentioning that Rangnick quote about 'open heart surgery', as if most of the players in today's matchday squad haven't only arrived in the last couple of years. Most of the 'deadwood' people were continually whining about have already left, and one more might as well be gone already.

The idea that Amorin will be given a billion or so to buy an entirely new squad that suits his philosophy over the next three years, while we're fighting relegation battles, just seems like a total fantasy to me. I'm absolutely not saying Amorin out, but surely he should be able to get results against the likes of Wolves while he's doing his rebuild project? Is that really too much to ask for?

We're going to be in the relegation battle...honestly wouldn't be shocked if Fergie takes over for the last 5 games to keep us up.

This is fair. Amorim will get it right but when youre here doing that, theres a requirement to balance results with the system.

Our squad isnt as bad as people make out and he has also made some questionable decisions. All this is fine because he is working it out, but I dont understand why posters are sticking their head in the sand in the interim claiming we are better when thats so clearly untrue.

Maybe he could but we don't know what his employers have said. If Wilcox and Co want this system, then maybe he has to stick to it.

This squad of players does not seem to suit any system or manager. It need ripping up. They need to get this right.
Worrying when, to me, our best players were Ugarte and Maguire. Ugarte looks a great signing, whilst many want Maguire gone. Not be surprised if we give Maguire a new short contract. He suits the centre or left of a back 3. Desperately need a goal threat and LWB though. Also think Martinez has badly dropped off as well as Mainoo. As for Bruno, the less said the better.

It's the bad judgement we have shown in the transfer market. Buying Mount, even the decision to extend Shaw's stay. Overpaying for players in fees, in wages. It is destroying the club.

We have conceded many goals of late. But most of them seems to come from corners/free kicks and not open play. If we can get that fixed I Think we’ll be fine from relegation this season.

We also can’t get our goalscoring right which is a worry. I want to see Amorim taking more risks in terms of tactics and how we approach the game. Especially against weaker opponents. His time here Will be a lot easier if we score the first goal.

These players do not have the mentality nor quality to turn the scoreline around á la United at Etihad the other week. That’s a 1 in 1000 game for these players..

Another frustrating match. We cant just wait for the opponent to make mistakes because we Will be the first one to do them - every damn time. So Amorim, you’ll have to take more risks and make these players aggressive. Not this nonsense.

The midfield trio of Mainoo, Ugarte and Bruno hasn’t looked great so far.

If I was Amorim I wouldn’t be pinning my hopes on those 3 just yet. It’s a wip that hasn’t worked so far.

Have yourself a depressing football Christmas.

Another gme that was so winnable but we managed to screw it curtesy of Bruno

Our squad absolutely sucks but with minimal reinforcements Francesco Farioli managed to make them look like a decent bunch getting us to second place before the winter break. Looking at United, Ruud did the exact same thing and I'm not sure Amorim is the answer. New coaches seem to want so much because of the United appointment. Ruud kept it clean and simple. Like Slot at Liverpool. I thing an enormous rethink of what to expect from a manager is in order.

It will be get better this season before it gets well. I didn't watch the game, had a good night sleep and check the result that we lost 2-0. Bruno isn't a captain material and Amorim should know better to sub him after his yellow. How many times have you seen Bruno dismiss after picking up a yellow? Even though I didn't watch the game, I am 100% sure he was whining as he leaves the field. Hopeless club buying lousy players for millions and millions. SJR must be fuming at everyone at the club.

By big moves I mean players who can improve the team. Whether it’s in January or in the summer, the team needs to be improved upon. The requisite quality simply is not there.

If we only focus on clearing out players and bringing in someone cheap, where is the quality that is actually going to develop in the team supposed to come from?
Well like I said, I'd be buying young, inexpensive players. 20-24 year olds mostly.

A prime age 27 year old would definitely improve the team, but it's a horrible long term but IMO. Improving this team now doesn't do anything for us, and in 2-3 years that same player is likely to be overpaid.

To me any of the Robinson, Hernandez, Gyokeres types are horrible strategic moves. Would be more of the same ol' United. We need players who are reaching their peak 2-4 years from now.

There hasn't yet been a team performance so infuriating that you can't go on the post match thread and find something even worse.
Are you trying to suggest the players in our squad aren't good enough to play for a PL team? A player we deemed not good enough for Utd plays for the team in 3rd atm. Another player we deemed not good enough has been one of Fulham's best players for years now. If he'd suggested our players weren't good enough for a top 4 team, that would be one thing, but he said the PL in general.

I do not understand why Amorim wants to play 3-4-3 formation, when we do not have the players to do so. And I do not like his rotation system, we will never get into a flow with that.

I still prefer this:

............................Onana...............

Dalot............De Ligt....Maguire......Martinez

...........Eriksen/Mainoo....Ugarte......................
............................Bruno............................
Garnacho..................................Diallo..........
............................Rashford............................

Even the state Rashford is in now is better than Højlund and Zirkzee.

It’s perfectly possible that we replaced average players with players that are equally average or maybe worse…
The squad is a complete mash of players with no specific skill sets, who seem to have massive weaknesses that are easily exploited, I think we just let Amorim build his team and stick to the plan,
too many games mixed with a new system and a team with low morale is playing out exactly how you’d expect

Don't forget about our goalkeeping department.

Onana is a terrible keeper and I'm willing to die on this hill. Ten Hag really fecked us hard

I got called ridiculous for saying we are in a relegation battle, slowly being sucked in, where are the points coming from.

Newcastle at home
Liverpool away
Southampton at home
Brighton at home
Fulham away

Onana is being made a scapegoat here. People forget that had he not made those amazing saves in earlier games, we would defo be in a relegation battle. The whole team is extremely poor. Our strikers cant score, defenders can’t defend. Midfield has been porous too.

I'm willing to bet, that we're going to win 2-3 games fron that.

This is what we've become, big game raising cnuts

The years of mismanagement really are crystallising right now - crap squad, still owe hundreds of millions in transfer fees, no FFP wiggle room - yikes this is grim

No, I'm trying to suggest that no matter how bad the team plays, you'll get stuff in here that is even more depressing. Such as the post you responded to.

For me, Bruno was unlucky on both yellows but you have to be cautious when on a yellow already. In terms of the corner goal we have to get a player in between our keeper and the player blocking them - let the referee sort it and/or win a foul from the keeper blocker. I don't blame the team for the second goal. There was about 30 seconds remaining and we were losing 1-0 and had a corner. The players had to commit, Onana should have gone up too.

The big negative to fix is to ensure that the team is a physical match for the PL. Look at the size and strength of most PL players now. We have to match them. We are bundled off the ball being played into feet far too many times. We also need better strikers. We always used to buy the top/in form striker in the league. Not anymore. Spend the budget on spine players - striker and GK first, then other spine players - CMs and CBs, making sure there's steel and physicality throughout our spine. They also need to be leaders, either with their mouths or their passion on the pitch.

In terms of positives, while not yet where we need to be scoring wise, we are doing better with possession and movements. I also like the fact that Amorin uses all his subs and that they generally have an impact. After the substitutions we were a different team going forward. The home fans also had a nervous last half hour, despite our 10 men. We also seemed to want to fight for the equaliser more than Wolves wanted to fight to hold on for the win.

I just can't comprehend why we season after season after season see these type of matches, where the opposition seem to succeed in pressing us all game long, while we constantly seems miles of when they play through our offensive line during build up play.

Our centerbacks was getting pressed all the time, and almost every viable option was guarded closely. But in the reverse scenario Wolves seemed to be able to play through our pressure fairly often, with our players hanging 10-15 metres behind opponents whenever the ball was played up from the defence giving them just enough time to excel the play that way.

We are very limited when building up from behind, and our pressure isn't cohesive. Incredible how those two facts really hasen't changed across several managers now.

I believe in Amorim to finally change it, but I hope to see progression in these two aspects very soon.

Remember once upon a time we’d have a run of games (or even a game or two) that we would consider ‘bankers’?

These days, no such game exists for us.

The most disheartening thing is that they look like they don’t even want to try. At least with Rangnick the excuse was that he was an interim and the players knew he was going anyway. But to look so disinterested, abject and plain unprofessional just a few weeks into the new manager’s reign is soul destroying. It’s like looking into a black hole. Hopelessness.

This run of bad form was always gonna happen. Amorim comes in and players start to play to impress, then when the realise they have no real future then of course they'll switch off. By the start of December all the guys Amorim decided he doesn't want have either been directly told or its been made obvious to find a new club hence the big drop off. The quicker those players are gone the quicker form will pick up.
