Post-match discussion

This is the first time post Ferguson were I am really depressed when it comes to our chances of turning things around. It seems that we are running out of options and excuses. We now have a new owner (partly) a change of management and a new manager, yes the players are still the result of extremely bad recruitment in the past, but it is still players of a certain quality that would walk straight into the lineup in Bournemouth, Wolves, Nottingham and the likes. We have a manager who has proven himself in one of Europes top leagues, and who seems to have the charisma and personality to make it at a top club like United, unlike ETH, and yet we are worse than we have ever been post Fergie.
My only hope is that Amorim is the “one” and he will use this season, which is anyway in tatters, to implement his way of playing and management methods, so that we are prepared for next season. This also means getting rid of non-performing players and create a hierarchy with strong leaders on and off the pitch, starting with a captain whose quality is more than just never being injured.

Keep Yoro, DeLigt, Amad. Garnacho, Mainoo and Højlund can still come good with more experienced players in their same positions to learn from.

Everyone else can go.

We are in for a hiding in the next 3 games as well. Any youth we can bring through?

Whoever signed off on Zirkee-lurkey needs to be thrown out the fecking door. Hopefully it’s the same person(s) who signed off on Antony and Malacia. This fish is rotting from the head.

We are unrecognizable from the pedigreed teams of Fergie. We are well and truly midtable mediocrities.

How are we all feeling? Tonight's result really kicked me in the bollocks, more so than any this season and tbh any since Fergie left.

Lowest point in my years supporting United.

Think we also need to jettison the inverted player mania. Play a right footer on the right, a lefty on the left, so maybe someone can cross a ball or play a pass without the outside of their boot. Playing inverted defensive wingbacks is funny. We are comedy merchants now.

Totally agree, checking back to get on the better foot always slows the flow of the move.

Incredible stuff, I've watched every game this season and we are getting worse and worse it's terrifying. I can't remember a single goal scoring opportunity for us tonight. We had a couple of very speculative shots from range but nothing else to note. That is unbelievable to me, how can a premier League football club not create any chances in a game, at least when we smash the ball into the channels and chase it we sometimes get a chance. It really is atrocious.

Individually they players are sinking deeper into the mire. Mainoo looks unrecognisable as the classy midfielder from last year. His passing is all over the place and decision making gone completely out the window, I don't understand it.
Billy basic stuff like being dribbled past contently in all areas of the pitch was a huge issue. We are just being skinned! Towards the end they were skipping past anyone and everyone with ease.

Seen a few negatives about Hojlund and again..I don't get it. What can he do up there? There were multiple times a quick ball into him was on and we just didn't bother. I find it crazy that when Antony came on he looked like our brightest spark by a mile.

So many glaring issues.

Dalot and Maz just don't do anything meaningful from those WB positions. Our only meaningful outlet is Amad and opposing teams have wisen up.

Please play Antony or Garnacho as a WB.

Considering the limited minutes given to Garnacho, it appears he’s not well liked by Amorim.

With Bruno and Ugarte missing our next game, I’m concerned things may get worse before they get better.

I'm absolutely not saying Amorin out, but surely he should be able to get results against the likes of Wolves while he's doing his rebuild project? Is that really too much to ask for?
Seems he’s forcing the team to play a style they’re not capable of playing.

As he moves out deadwood and brings in new recruits, he can fully implement his style.

But in the meantime, maybe a little realism is needed.

When we attack, it is always too slow and don't have enough bodies in the box. Often, ouw WBs have to turn and pass the ball back instead of crossing to the attackers. Bruno , Mainoo and co are just not in the box in time to receive the balls. Seems there is no urgency to be there. It is so easy for the opponents to stop Hoijland. I looked at Wolves, they always have 3 bodies in the box when cross comes in. Why can't we?

We made things too complicated at times. It is good that Bruno and Ugarte will miss the next game. Hopefully Eriksen can make the attacks more direct. Casemiro might be slow but he can spray long passes which we can speed up the attacks.

This squad of players are the biggest bunch of cnuts I have ever seen play for us. There are one or two that will do ok, but the rest are a shower of fcuks that have been allowed get away with way too much, for too long. It's never been this bad in my lifetime.

Not for me .I've seen us get relegated.Seen us lose 6 nil to fecking Ipswich.Lose 0-4 at home to Forest. ( ok it was Clough's Forest) Bottle the title in 92. Miss our on a 2nd double in 95 by 2 goals.Lose 1-6 at home to City.Lose 0-5 a home to the detested Scousers and 0-7 away to them.
We do dizzying highs at this club but when we are bad we are really fecking bad.

I genuinely believe that if Amorim was the coach for Wolves and Pereira was MUs, the result would be even worse... Wolves has exactly the kind of wing-backs and AMs to play to Amorims strength and that's sad to say, considering Wolves are at 17th.

If you compare with the United sides over the first 2 decades of the PL, it’s like watching a different sport. I assumed that you would need the basic level of control, technique and understanding to play for United, and only now you realise that that was taken for granted for. There are players who are so far below the levels we had for so long…it’s staggering how we’ve reached this point. There really should be a 3 part documentary inquest about how the Zirkzee transfer was signed off. Would be comedy gold. “Heads should roll” is an understatement, about 80-90% of those employed at the club are miles below the level.

Highlight moments:

- when our goalkeeper conceded a goal with a complete howler and in order to calm the situation, we took kick off and immediately passed it to him again and all ran off, and then he booted it straight at a Wolves player's head

- Bruno’s genuinely confused looking face at getting a second yellow card for an insane foul that could probably have been a straight red.

- Dalot responding strongly to the red card by, for ansolutely no reason, collapsing to the floor and letting Wolves score.

- When VAR for some reason looked at said goal for about 3 minutes and fannied around working out the exact moment the pass was played, despite the receiving player being offside by about half a fecking metre regardless.

- in the first half when amazon kept interrupting coverage of the game to show someone famous in the crowd, except it was foggy so they were just showing the outline of some random person's face. One of them I think was the bad guy from Indiana Jones.

Observations:

- Yoro is not very good at defending and is also a defender
- I am unclear on what these standards are that Amorim has imposed since they apparently don't include working hard or showing any bravery or desire during a game.
- Antony would be better at left wing back than Dalot. Also why are we bringing him on at right wing back and leaving Dalot at left wing back when there's absolutely no advantage or purpose to a wingback cutting inside? Someone explain this to me?

Amorim - not going to jump on his back but he is not getting these players. If you let them feel sorry for themselves that is what they will do.

DDG was the golden glove winner of the PL league and we just watched him walk off. A shame really.
I wasn’t opposed to replacing DDG. He had a few howlers in his last year here. But we replaced him with the wrong player. Need to be aggressive in commanding your box in the EPL and Onana isn’t that.

[1] We have conceded many goals of late. But most of them seems to come from corners/free kicks and not open play. If we can get that fixed I Think we’ll be fine from relegation this season.

[2] We also can’t get our goalscoring right which is a worry. I want to see Amorim taking more risks in terms of tactics and how we approach the game. Especially against weaker opponents. His time here Will be a lot easier if we score the first goal.

[3] These players do not have the mentality nor quality to turn the scoreline around á la United at Etihad the other week. That’s a 1 in 1000 game for these players..

[4] Another frustrating match. We cant just wait for the opponent to make mistakes because we Will be the first one to do them - every damn time. So Amorim, you’ll have to take more risks and make these players aggressive. Not this nonsense.
[1] Are the Utd players really short? Can they not jump? They apparently don’t think about colliding with the attacking players…. Really wonder what the thinking is there.
[2] We’re slow and we don’t have a full team attacking. No one dribbles the ball. Passing is terrible (there was a 6 foot pass where the passer missed the receiver. How can that happen?) When we take a corner, there’s no sign we have any capability to score.
[3] & [4] no one takes any chances.

In Thailand for 37 days having the time of my life but all this team wants to do is depress me everytime I go to a bar to watch.

I have had the most depressing and stressful year of my life and will be glad 2024 is coming to an end. Been also dying with the flu since just before Xmas. Just as well I follow Utd then....

So, we were not bad in the first half. We weren't great, but we did have that Dalot shot on target and some other chances. Not great, not bad. A little bit better than Wolves.

The problem is that every one of our players could play in a side with some great players, we've frequently had some workmanlike players alongside the stars. This current team is all journeyman. I don't want to insult any of our past players because most of this current crop isn't fit to be mentioned in the same breath, but it's the difference between having a McTominay in the team and having a team entirely comprised of McTominays. Ji-Sung Park and Darren Fletcher would tower like gods above the players in this side, neither were considered abundantly skilled but both played a vital role and ran their hearts out. We have no one of that mould.

A couple players show signs of being above average, but this season it's down to Mazraoui and Amad, struggling to think of any other players who would play in one of the top 5 teams. And neither of those are even as good as any of the players in our last title-winning side. Casemiro is a great player but no longer has the wheels for the PL, same with Eriksen. The talented players we have are past their best.

We had tons of chances to right this sinking ship. Ole brought in: Maguire, Sancho, Dan James, Diallo, Pellistri.
Ten Hag shipped out 20: Ronaldo, Bailly, Henderson, Mengi, Fred, Elanga, Chong, Kovar, Telles, Iqbal, DeGea, Jones,
Tuanzebe, Garner, Mata, Matic, Lingard, Pogba, Pereira, Cavani.

Ten Hag signed 21: Dubravka, Weghorst, Antony, Sabitzer, Malacia, Eriksen, Casemiro, Martinez, Butland, Mount, Evans, Onana, Højlund, Bayindir, Reguilón, Amrabat, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Yoro, Ugarte, Butland. Should have kept Sabitzer, but do any of those others speak to any sort of intent to get back on top? Mount & Højlund were kinda buying pigs in a poke, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Yoro, Ugarte all doing okay, not great, but look at all that dross, and for a total of about £550 million. Can you imagine any of them replacing one of the players in the 2013 team: DeGea, Rafael, Evra, Rio, Evans, Valencia, Anderson, Berbatov, Rooney, Giggs, Smalling, Chicharito, Vidic, Carrick, Nana, Young, Welbeck, Van Persie, Scholes, Cleverley, Kagawa, and Lindegaard. The difference is staggering.

Especially all the new members, a lot of them are just !

We will need Casemiro, albeit being past his best, in that he’s one of the players who could have the stomach and resilience for a relegation fight which we are slipping into.

Ruben himself is now taking about survival.

It’s futile to look for quality in the performances now, so I’m looking for resilience, or even just the potential for it - De Light, Maz, Maguire, Hojland, maybe Ugarte have that.
I don’t see which other players are up for the dog flight we are now in. We could at the very least make ourselves harder/unpleasant/meaner to play against. Other teams look forward to playing us because we don’t trouble their defence much, and there’s not much steel either.

True! We are good for 40 minutes maximum. I think we are not going to enjoy the next 3 matches, but maybe someone will stand up to be counted, and scrap, as you point out we don’t have enough fighters.

Absolutely, shocking really can't remember teams scoring directly from corners again us under Ferguson.
I mean how many times have you seen it happen in general? Then it happens twice against us in the matter of a couple of weeks.

Everyone will be trying it against us now, and fair play to them.

This sentiment can be applied to every player we've replaced in the past 11 years. Every signing is wrong

It's entirely realistic to think we can get a result against relegation fodder, for fecks sake

We were pretty shite and I'm not Onana's biggest fan, but I don't know why we're pretending what happened to him last night isn't a foul 99.9% of the time. Just like Bayindir against Tottenham.

The ref last night was awful and only helped to enable the Wolves game plan. It shouldn't matter, but we're out of form and low on confidence, so you could do without these things piling up even more in the other teams favour

Agreed. The basics of football remain regardless of the system: work hard, pass to teammates, shoot when within range, track back on defense, stop opponents from shooting, etc.

What happened to the new manager bounce? Do the players already not respect Amorim and his staff?

At the end of the day, players should give their best for the badge and for personal pride.

Our next 3 games are critical for turning things around.
