It's a shame because he's so composed on the ball at times, there's things I really like about him. He makes too many errors though and is pretty weak and slow for a centre half playing at the level he is though.
Agree 100 percent.

He’s been so good playing with Varane but I don’t know if he will rediscover that form. Maybe it was the presence of Varane that bought out the best in him.

He is at fault for 3 goals today. In the first one, he lets Solanke go and hit that shot unchallenged (thought Bayandir!)

Second is just bad school boy error. What’s he doing passing the ball to Spurs there. And third was g worst bit of line management given that he could see Solanke and the defensive line in front of g ithim.

I really hope this is a blip because he is one of the few players who could really make this system tick in attack. City goal. Pass for Garna in the second half today and a number of other vertical line breaking passes..

Also - our defence today showed how much it missed De Ligt. I feel he is going unsung but he’s really controlling the tempo of our games and slowing it down when we need to. Also don’t think he’s been at fault for goals as well since Amorim came in

My biggest issue with Bayindir isn't he was crap today but the fact that he is most likely the keeper to beat in training. May explain why we are so shit at finishing.
Bayindire needed to shut the hell up about the 4th goal it was just atrocious keeping, between him and Forster I can't remember seeing 2 worse keepers on the same pitch outside of socceraid

Fun game.

The league cup shouldn’t be taken too seriously. So no need to go overboard with criticism or analysis of the players.
The Premier League and Champions League are more important …. but we’re not going to win either of them.

This loss has saved us an absolute hiding from Liverpool over two legs. The Turkish keeper isn't good. That's about it.

When you look at the fixture congestion Spurs have to deal with now... rather them than us. They may even wind up missing out on top 8 in the Europa League as a result and add even more fixtures.

We are scoring more, but are conceding more goals under Amorim than under ETH.
Our defensive performances have slipped a little.

How do you work that out?

Are you talking about the whole of ETH's tenure or this season?

Even taking into account tonight which has skewed the stats temporarily, by my maths we've conceded slightly less goals per game than the 17 games under Ten Hag. Before tonight Amorim's record was considerably better over for the games this season.

Was in with the Spurs fans today and was ready to walk at 3-0
If it weren't for the mistakes thought we was ok
At 3-1 you could sense the fans getting nervous and thought this could be on.
Cue the goal from the corner....

Game of errors. We made more than spurs. But I think performance overall was good.

Silver lining: we out-possessed a team like Spurs and actually manage to make a good use of that said possesion.

He's just not strong enough, he steps out off his line and doesn't give himself any room to move forward to claim the ball. He's ended up caught under it and trying to flap backwards. Even without that contact he's probably struggling to get there.
I agree with that .. He missed the punch by some distance. VAR may call it somedays but most days the goal stands. Both keepers were horrible by anyones standards !!

Legend says that even Antony scored against him with his right foot.

At least there's less games on the calendar

a bit more rest for the players

He's amongst those making mistakes in all 3 goals yes. Thats absolutely true. He isnt individually responsible for all 3 though.

The first goal the team lets Porro receive the ball with 18 yards of space between him and the defence. The only one who isnt at fault there is Ugarte who pressed the previous player quite well although unsuccessfully. All the rest of our players stand there on the edge of our box miles away from the player shaping up to shoot.

Eventually the only one to rush out and put some pressure on the ball, albeit too late and poorly with him jumping and turning his back which could have led to all kinds of fatal dipping deflections, instead Porro's shot comes right through and the keeper spills it into a poor error. When the shot comes in Yoro is the deepest CB and would be playing Solanke onside and is best shaped to respond. None of our players including Yoro is alive to it like Solanke and he finishes it well

For the 2nd Mazaroui and Yoro are positioned to deal with Son, he passes the ball on the overlap and I think its Spence who has time and space to cross with his left foot. I'd say its Yoro who is positioned to take over when the overlap happens and he doesn't close Spence down. Then the cross comes in and Evans has put himself in a good position to deal with it. He doesnt react and touch the ball which could have cleared the danger, so Lisandro now has to make up for the previous mistakes and bail us out. He tries to improvise a touch with his left foot because he doesnt trust his right, and like the poor save on the first goal its cleared only into a danger area - so Lisandro makes another error on top of the 2 or 3 before that instead of bailing his teammates out.

3rd goal when the pass is played over the top I think its Dalot who is playing Solanke onside. Its tight between him and Lisandro but thats how it looks to me. He chases back and gets into position, Solanke finds it too easy to come inside onto his right foot from Lisandro, so thats a mistake there and then Evans who should be in position to take over with him coming inside is incredibly slow to turn and make an effort at stopping the shot. So thats another error after Lisandro's.

All in all it was poor from Lisandro, it was poor from the goalkeeper, it was poor from Yoro - but at least hes young and hasnt played much, it was poor from Evans, it was poor from Dalot and the rest of them when you consider the first goal. Defending as a team was poor and none of our defenders played well and saved us after their teammates made mistakes on the goals.

Won't feel like it now, however we could see the benefit of those two free midweeks later in the season

Silver lining: we out-possessed a team like Spurs and actually manage to make a good use of that said possesion.

This was the biggest thing about today. Before the match I was fascinated to see how we would handle spurs high line and high pressing. They completely dominated us at our home with that.

It is so encouraging to see how we pressed them and basically played the game in their half, in the first half. We lacked the quality in attack to make use of the balls we kept winning around their box but the overall set up and approach was exceptional.

for some reason I feel indifferent to winning Carabao or FA Cup this year - probably because we just won them last 2 years and we no longer have pressure to win trophy

We should focus on getting top 5 (I think it would do this year since other english teams do well in europe) or Europa for UCL instead

Even more encouraging that we had two or three almost identical chances (falling to Eriksen, I believe). Attacking patterns at last!

Started noticing a couple of games back that players have begun playing passes blind expecting teammates where they need to be. And finding them. Automatisms!

A game of 7 goals and not one of them was any good. Extraordinarily display of goalkeeping, we lost because their keeper was just slightly less hilarious than ours.

I found the whole thing funny, not really bothered about being knocked out tbh

Eh, their third goal was decent and not really sure what the keeper could have done about it.

Stuck between annoyed we lost and being okay with being out of the cup.
PL and EL are the important ones this year and this gives us fitter players for those and more time on the training pitch.

Good point. If this is the standard of goalkeeping the players are facing in training, makes you wonder how good the likes of Garnacho and Rashford look in training.

No issues with a loss at all. A crack at Europe and league position should be the focus for us. This season has turned in to a magnificent opportunity for the squad to get it together under new coaching and management. The only pressure on the players should be what Amorim sees fit to get them functioning in his plans. Individual errors have always fecked us this past decade but it's the fight to make those mistakes inconsequential that's what was lacking in our team.
Don't stop or give up is all fans can ask. Win, lose or draw doesn't matter as much as the fight and effort being shown everytime by someone who is a professional athlete. If we can do just that then the Wolves and Crystal Palaces of this league will face us on an equal physical level. Add a goalscorer to this team and United could become a good bet against anyone below top 6 and consistency like that puts you in the mix.

Obviously disappointing to lose but the system is clearing working, players are just making silly errors which are costing us goals. What Amorim has done in a month is pretty incredible considering what he inherited and what he is asking the players to do. If we can get a couple of players in January to upgrade a couple of positions I think we can have a strong second half of the season and hopefully continue the progression.

It's the sort of team we need to be putting out more often in easier games. I'm glad he's started doing it earlier rather than later.

Putting out our strongest 11 in the league cup or in the euro diddy league might win us an occasional cup, but we'll forever be shite in the league.

Without the horrible mistakes from Forster it could have been a disastrous loss for us. What a poor performance again. I wonder how many awful performances Amorim needs to notice that his tactics don't work at all.

Depends on the standards you set , the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal would be embarrassed at that and call it shambolic.

But from the very low level we are coming from you could call it encouraging , like many on here are. But it highlights just how our standards are right now.

Most of the comments from neutrals and commentators online are along the lines of like watching two pub teems down the local park with all the mistakes from both teams.
They are settled sides with settled systems they have been operating with for years, we had a changed side with a new manager trying to get a system in place. Spurs didn't win through fabulous skill, they won because we made a number of mistakes. Cut the mistakes out, get a few strategic signings in and things will get better. We obviously need a better backup in goal, a LWB, another CB and definitely a striker. The number of chances we had a good striker in there and we could have won.

I didn't see the game yesterday and tried to avoid getting the result spoiled so I could watch it today, sadly a highlight headline gave it away so didn't bother.

Before the game I would've actually happily bowed out of the Carabaro cup so the players could get more time on the training pitch but seeing the goals we concede infuriates me. I am so fed up conceding from corners and individual sloppiness. Get a fecking grip.

We scored some brilliant goals however.

Actually nice to see us sustain pressure and attacks, it's been so long since I've seen that happen.

Feel it was a mistake by Amorim to field such a weak team when we're on a high from the weekend and gaining momentum. Winning two in a row away at top 6 teams would have built morale that much quicker. This is an average Spurs side, there for the taking.

Missed the first goal, but for me the 2nd goal was on Yoro for not tracking his runner and Martinez for faffing about in the box. Martinez owns that third goal. And Bayindir the fourth. I don't understand why we bought that keeper, nor at the time, thought it had to do with something outside of footballing reasons.
I agree. We're in the honeymoon period with Amorim, so any and all criticism is pounced on by posters caught up in the hype, but a mistake is a mistake whether it's made after 5 games or 500 games.

Obviously there are mitigating circumstances. Amorim wants to look at some players, since he's had to take over mid-seaeon. He also wants to make sure we have fresh legs for the Christmas period and we've had bad injuries over the last 24-months. So all that has to be factored in.

However, as you say, we were on a high after the City game and Spurs are there for the taking. This game, lest we forget, was a Quarter Final.

Rotation I can understand, but what's the point in fielding Eriksen, who will leave on a free at the end of the season? What's the point in swapping the goalkeepers? What's the point in playing Lindelof and then Evans? What's the point in resting Mainoo and Amad, who are both young lads?

Personally, I don't mind resting players for the League Cup, it should never be a primary target...BUT, the caveat to that is, if you're going to do it, don't bring in the same old failures - use it to test the better youth team players. See how they do mixed in with 7 or 8 regular starters.

That team last night was too weak, unnecessarily weak.

Some player profiles:

Bayindir
Position: GK
Strengths: Wears gloves
Weaknesses: Stopping shots going into the goal, stopping things that aren't shots going into the goal, goalkeeping.

Lindelof:
Position: CB
Strengths: Doesn't play as much as he used to
Weaknesses: Scared of defending, scared of the football

Evans:
Position: Retired CB
Strengths: Criticism of inevitable defeat nulled slightly by the fact an 80 year old was playing in defence
Weaknesses: Grandad pace, questionable level of effectiveness at not being dead.

Antony:
Position: Feck knows anymore
Strengths: mocking lower league players
Weaknesses: Everything else.

These four would not play, under any circumstance at all, for a majority of premier league teams, and for ALL of the premier league teams who have ambition not to flirt around with relegation. I like Amorim a lot, but if you choose to make an example of one of your senior players not meeting the correct standards, who, even though their attitude might stink, have a level of ability...you can't then immediately follow that up by playing people who can't do the most basic tasks on a football pitch and therefore don't meet any standards at all. They either apply to everyone or no one.

Other things:

Professional games of professional football between two professional football teams:
This was one of them. People who were playing in this game are paid handsomly to play football and be professional at it, and not dick about like they're in a playground.

Diogo Dalot - Sorry but you can't mouth off about the "emotional control" of the team being so good and then immediately serve up a game like that, which had about the same level of emotional maturity as a fully grown adult setting fire to their house because their mum bought them the wrong flavoured ice cream. Just shut up. Every time he opens his mouth from now on he should be forced to eat an entire bar of soap.

Tottenham Hotspur:
I thought we were a dumb team, but what a baffling and astounding display of attempted self destruction and pure childishness. My favourite bit was them time wasting for about 3 minutes after there were 0 seconds left of added time to play. As if deliberately trying to wind the ref up into adding more time on to spite them. Also our first goal - the sheer obnoxious of it from their end genuinely annoyed me. What are they doing? What have they achieved, at any point, to make them think they're good enough to twat around with the ball in their own six yard box like that? Honestly they must be a bunch of massive half brained nobheads. To a man. I can't see any other explanation. They ended up having to rely on the ref not doing his job properly to win a game where they were 3-0 up at home with half hour left...and they're so dumb that even when it was 3-0 you're half expecting them to lose.

Potentially playing Arsenal of Liverpool in the next round and playing like that:
Liverpool as it turns out. Erm, good luck, Tottenham.

I'd like to go on about positives, of which there were a few, but I can't get over the amount of basic lack of competence or professionalism both teams displayed. Pretty much every single goal in that game would be a genuine embarassment for a team of primary school kids to concede.

I like our approach here, high pressing, on the front foot, trying to attack with a bit more pace and desire, pushing players a bit higher on he pitch.
It was a fun game even if concede goals far too easy.
It is easy to see that we need to do some good work in the transfer market. Too few players with the needed quality to reach he top.

The progress is still clear to see for me. Quite a few positives from that performance. Obviously negatives too but thats all things that gives Amorim the information he needs to adjust the team. This season will have setbacks and our players are essentially having to do a pre season in the middle of the season. Besides, not having to worry about this cup is only a good thing. Lets us focus on the Premier League and the Europa League which should be our two main focuses this season.

Eh, their third goal was decent and not really sure what the keeper could have done about it.
Their third goal was shite as well. Wouldn't be blaming the keeper, but the 'defending' from Martinez and Evans was pathetic, Sunday league stuff.
