LC L League Cup Quarter-Final

Tottenham Hotspur 4:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Its not about Marcus its about the message he's trying to send and positive changes he wants to make. If Rashford wants to sulk off rather than put the work in that's his problem. What's more important is the rest of the team and the reaction it gets from them. If the statement is about standards then its not a good look to willingly lower the standard of the team for the very next game. Its a confusing message to send. Especially when we then concede 4 comedy goals and lose a game against a team who had a full on meltdown right in front of us. What kind of standards are those? Doesn't matter if you perform like the circus as long as you act and dress yourself in the right way?

I get that he has to rotate. I'm looking at it in isolation and agree there's plenty of other sides to the argument...but I'd argue the "there's a big game at the weekend" statement. This was a quarter final. We're in 13th place in the league. Its arguable which game was bigger, and I think after the statement at the weekend with the team selection (and result), this game became bigger and important to reinforce that statement. Puffing your chest out isn't nearly as effective if you then trip over your own shoelace.
Maybe it's personal preference, but I'd rather we started to climb the table and show consistent league form. If we're going to concrete on one cup competition, then it should be the Europa League.

We won the cup 2 seasons ago, and the FA cup last year. Where did that get us? Was there any progress gained from that? I'd happily take a trophyless season if a team that looks like it can actually start go somewhere starts to emerge.

And I'd argue only Bayindir and Martinez properly showed themselves up last night. Bayindir will be lucky to play again, and we don't have any obvious replacement for Martinez with Shaw out.

I kind of understand what you're trying to say, but it seems incredibly pedantic and somewhat of a moot point at the moment.

That is personal preference. I'm not looking at it as winning the cup. I'm looking at it as the longer term goal of getting the players to buy into having a tougher and more winning mentality...and I think in that sense when you have just sent a fairly big message in that regard, the next game is the most important one. Sacrificing it for the one after doesn't guarantee you winning the one after, and changes your goal/message from being aboit standards and mentality, to being worried about beating Bournemouth at home.

And then if you dont beat Bournemouth at home where does that leave you?

Even if we win on Sunday there isn't really a way to claim it's because we lost to Spurs. Where as if we don't win on Sunday the whole cultural reboot thing is lost into the latest impending crisis..

I think there is a clear pattern of play with Amorim and that’s more than what we had for a long time now. Yes the squad is not perfect and it will need more time but you can already see the first fruits of the change. We dominate games, have more possession in one game than in 3 with eth. Expected goals show that we are on the right track.

We will climb up the table for sure and will play for cl qualification as 5th will be enough propably. Second focus should be Europe. Just win the el and the season would be a great success when you think where we are coming from.

I think we mortar go all out for the Europa league to cement a place in the champions league.

Exactly that we got a structure no huge gaps from midfield to defence. We are progressing the ball way better than before. There is nothing bad to say about Amorim he’s doing the best he can with what he has available and If he was in charge earlier we probably would be contendig for top 4.

That needs to be objective. Structure, pattern of play, and XG are meaningless if we don’t win games.

The comeback was great and united almost made it 3-3 from 3-0 down!

The reason doing these properly is important is because they inevitably do lead to long term positive results. Plenty of clubs grind out a run of results, but then can't keep it going because they didn't do it from a base where they truly deserved it or off of something they could sustain long term.

I'm marveling that folks in here are expecting few mistakes. Yet Tue players are literally having a pre season with minimal training time smack in the middle of competitive football. Trying to learn a new formation, playing structure and tactics. It should come as no surprise that some usually reliable performers are taking a bit of time to get to grips with their distances and roles in the system.
