Manchester United 3:1 Southampton

Post-match discussion

Thu, 16 January 2025

Game changed when Collyer and Zirkzee came on. Suddenly we had an outlet in stead of giving it straight back to them.

Anyone who’s watched Southampton a lot knows there’s point tally doesn’t reflect how they’ve played in most games, they just make stupid mistakes at key times.

Still raging they didn’t give that handball

I've preached the value of Amad for a couple of years but I just want to sign off with a well done for Zirkzee. Really made a difference.

Overall it was a bit pants but De Ligt etc looked decent. We just need to get all 11 playing to their potential more often.

And, again, I love you Amad you little beautiful bastard.

First Half was absolutely woeful, everyone looked knackered and 3-1 at HT to Southampton wouldn't of flattered them.

Gained some control with the changes, Zirkzee was fantastic and then, well, Amad took over special player that kid.
I feel relief more than anything, it felt like everyone really needed that win especially at home, hopefully we recover for Sunday.

up until Amads second and third goals, man of the match for me was Onana, he kept us in the game with his first half saves, we could have easily been 2 or 3 down by HT.
But overall I like Amad, he never gives up on anything he is the only one to show total commitment in every game he plays.

Wowser. We were played off the park for 60 minutes. Complete dross with Southampton looking like an in form Brighton team against a poor championship team. .

Southampton should have buried us in that first half, Onana was immense in keeping us in the game.

Zirkzee changed the game. Where has this player been hiding. Amad is a different class. A 10 from me just for that 13 minute Hatrick.
60? More like 80 minutes. Up there with the most shambolic performances in the post-Fergie era up until the first Amad goal.

Have to be happy about the finish, but we were rotten for most of the game. That needs to be remembered as better teams wont fade like Southampton did.
But against the better teams we raise our game anyway. So basically we’re unbeatable now.

Jan 16th 2025 will forever be known as the day Amadona broke Southampton's heart.
And I thought my Birthday was going to end as a real downer but thank you Amad for making it great and congratulations on that quick hat-trick:D:D. Come on you Reds!!!

That Antony cameo will go down as one of the worst ever.

He even went for the full house by trying to waste time when it was 1-1 late on.

Another game where I'm amazed by Amorim's in-game tactics. He brought in Zirkzee, Eriksen and Collyer to change the game. He left almost all of the attacking players on the pitch, because we had to score. And it eventually worked out well. Only critic I have is that he brought Maguire in a bit too late for Yoro but maybe it's because of his condition.

Most of the team played 120 min on Sunday, but at the same time the team has been heavily rotated since Amorim came in. That first 70 minutes was simply disgraceful. Proper disgusting performance. Amad to the rescue again. What a player.

The formation and setup is a huge huge issue. There is no tactical flexibility to change the system when it’s not working either.
This issue is you need too many specialist players to implement it properly.

With attacking wing backs, any opposition winger can find too much space. So you need lateral centre backs, and we don't have that, except Shaw.

The wide players need to be proper wing backs, and the 10s have to be inside players, not wingers.

The problem is, we could get all these players, but then when Amorim leaves, we're stuck with a team in no way set up for the next guy. It's a mess all round.

Damn, that’s a low bar for amazement.

Special mention for that pass from Eriksen for the second. Don't think many players in the PL could have nailed that pass with such delicacy.

Zirkzee changed the game. The ball was going forward and actually sticking. He brought Bruno, Amad and co into the game.

Mazraoui didn't have a single attacking involvement for the whole game. That cannot happen in this formation. We are desperately needing proper wing backs to see what this formation is capable of.

Yoro was left isolated because Amad is more suited to the right AM position and no cover. That was rough to watch. A lot to work on ahead of Brighton.

Amad reminds me so much of Giggs with his work rate in top of his ability, I just wish Amorim would play the two behind the striker out wide so Amad is closer to goal but allowed to drive inside from out wide rather than with two 10’s as we have zero width.

Outside of the last 10 minutes it was an awful performance and the result very much papered over the cracks but hopefully a win will give us some much needed momentum in the league now, we’re desperate for a left footed left wing back though.

We somehow turned the tables on them when it was looking more grim as the game went on. Thank goodness Amad is here to stay.

Never in doubt.

Huge win! Very happy for the new boss and hope the lads can keep scraping points until we're in the clear!

Southampton certainly didn't play like a bottom of the league team. It wasn't down to lack of effort being one under for most of the game. Thought the we put a really good effort in. Saw a very good Brentford the other night against city. Southampton have a similar playing style and were on a par with them. So we beat a midtable team tonight. Apart from Amad, De Ligt was a beast tonight and Zirkzee looke sharp and is ready to take over from the Dane. A great win for us!

Let's give Zirkzee his flowers too, he gave us a presence upfront to build our attacks.

Hojlund has become petulant without any impact he's even stopped pressing

Repost from match day thread:

Amad again

We can't keep relying on him. The rest if the team should be embarrassed that he's having to bail us out. But I love him!

Zirkzee changed the game as well, the ball stuck to him and he made space that gave him options. I don't think he has the technical ceiling or eye for goal to be our #1 longterm but he should start the next games. Rasmus was criminal.

Amorim has learned a thing or two I hope, some of these players just did not turn up with that right attitude today. But it's also on him, whatever he asked them to do either did not land, or he got the strategy wrong. We were lethargic and devoid of initiative. We had 1/3rd possession at one point in the first half. We have to start going out believing we can win, playing on the front foot, against these sides

Yoro as well must learn from today, he was absolutely toasted. If he hasn't got that electric recovery pace then he needs to find another strategy when he faces these types of players. But he has time on his hands, he can learn from the senior CBs. I am not worried about that.

Amad getting all the praise, not undeserved, but Eriksen won that game for us. As he came on I was frustrated he wasn’t getting the ball, when he finally did oufff that pass. Only him and occasionally Bruno capable to find that pass.

Zirkzee also opened up our play going forward. He’s a big lad and harder for defenders to mark. Good with his back to the goal.

Makes me wonder what Rasmus is doing wrong because he’s also a big lad and strong, but just never capable of holding the ball or link up with the midfield. He runs when he should not, and meets when he should run behind it seems.

Anthony is really terrible. Has no confidence and it shows. Overall it was a shit performance from us and Southampton deserved more.

Amad and Big Z and De Ligt standouts. Amad edges it with the hattrick.

Worrying. Sulemana make Yoro look like a hungover Sunday League player.
Pace seems to be everything in football. A lot of defenders can not deal with pace. We need to invest in some rapid tricky players

Ugarte had a nightmare game right from the kick off.
Gave a great performance against Arsenal and then this!
Nothing he did came off.
Nearly every touch turned to shit.
A disaster of a game for him.

Kobbie not at the races.
Way off the pace and they ran rings round him like a training cone.

Leny made to look like a young 19 year old rookie.
Which he is.
Didn’t stand a chance with no full back cover on that side.

Hojlund again, continues to struggle to get in the game.

Bringing on ZZ and the other changes made all the difference.
Thank g@d for Amad.
Credits to Zirkzee, Collyer, de Ligt and our savour tonight, Onana.

With the penalty, that should have been given, it would have been 3.99.

Relief! Poor for 70 minutes but much better at the end there. Zirkzee was fantastic when he came on. Collyer very good, also. Need to be playing like that for more than 20 minutes, mind. A win is a win! Get in there, lads!
