Manchester United 3:1 Southampton

Post-match discussion

Largely awful and undeserved. Southampton are a hopeless side which tells you all about how poor we were.

Equally, I've loathed Southampton since May 1 1976. So they can get that right up them.

I think the only positive that I see with United is Amad nailing down the right AM or RWB role. Hat trick in 14 mins to save this game. I think Zirkzee needs to start ahead of Hoijund. Zirkzee offers alot more to our game with distribution then Hoijund who practically does nothing almost all the games. How can Amorim continue to start Hoijund is beyond me?

He was off his game when he was at RWB. Put him at AMR.

Woeful until the 80th minute. Team selection, individual performances and positional discipline all contributing. Nice hat trick for Amad and well chuffed for Zirkzee. Thought he had a great game when he came on.

I was against a lot of rotation for this game, thinking that we should play our best team, but on reflection the likes of Mainoo and Ugarte were out on their feet after 30-40 minutes after playing 90-120 minutes at the weekend. Thankfully it didn't cost us in the end, but I think fringe players should have started this one.

Wowser. We were played off the park for 60 minutes. Complete dross with Southampton looking like an in form Brighton team against a poor championship team. .

Southampton should have buried us in that first half, Onana was immense in keeping us in the game.

Zirkzee changed the game. Where has this player been hiding. Amad is a different class. A 10 from me just for that 13 minute Hatrick.

Just terrible performance from us. We have no clue how to progress the ball as a team. We have no clue how to defend as a team. Ruben needs to scramble going forward. Soton is (probably) going down for a reason and we were dominated for stretches. We need new a way to organize us.
Amad will not be able to bail us out every game.

Never in doubt really was it lads.

Zirkzee made a huge difference when he came on, the just stuck to him unlike Hojlund, maybe we need to start games with Zirkzee and bring Hojlund on with 30mins left to run at tiring defences.

I would have liked to see Amorim protect Yoro more as he was clearly having a bad game and getting the run around by whylie coyote, we could have switched him with DeLigt to just try and do something.

Amad, Onana, DeLigt, Zirkzee and Bruno played to their level, Ugarte did fine and would have liked to see Collyer next to him when Mainoo went off. Garnacho was his usual half good half poor but at less tries a 100% to shoot or create and should have an a goal and assist.

The rest were all pretty poor.

1. Huge win in our relegation battle. Need 3 or 4 more wins and we should be safe.

2. If Ruben Amorim is really serious about changing the culture and turning things around, the first step needs to be making the team selection merit-based. Collyer and Zirkzee deserve starts on Sunday vs Brighton after their performances tonight. Both players changed the game when they came on.

3. What more needs to be said about Amad that hasn't already been said. What a player.

Agreed - should be Onana - Martinez, Maguire, De Ligt - Dalot, Collyer, Ugarte, Mazraoui - Amad, Bruno and Zirkzee

Amad take a bow son.
Introduction of Zirkzee and Collyer changed the game
Team looked tired after Sunday game
Yoro took a lesson today and Kobbie was so poor and leggy today

Man Utd 0 - Southampton 1 - Amad 3.

There were a couple of good performances to be fair — most notably by Onana and Zirkzee, but what a disgrace... I'm going to go and enjoy Amad's hat-trick for the moment though.

Got to be happy with the win, but didn’t enjoy the bulk of that game. After recent performances I didn’t think we’d revert to nothingness. That first hour was so bad, fortunate the opposition weren’t more clinical or it might have been out of sight before we got going.

We were awful yes - but I still don't understand how Southampton can have so few points - there is a lot of quality in that side

Overall a really poor performance. Nearly gifting this awful Southampton side their second win of the season at OT is unacceptable. Thank god for Amad is all I can say.

What a crazy game... Pretty stoked for Amad who deserves his moment in the spotlight. But bloody hell, that was 80 minutes of pretty dire stuff. Now most of the talk will be about 3 goals in 12 minutes to turn a game but before that, we looked pretty bad. Don't think anybody really played well today and I think, Soton was very well prepared, hitting the same check points as Wolves did - running at us, runs through the center and tackle hard and we struggled again.

Crazy crazy game

Haha. You have to laugh! Thank feck for Amad.
Bruno, De Ligt, Amad and Zirkzee were good. The rest were woeful.
I don't know what to think.

Don't like how many aren't giving Zirkzee credit for changing this game. Came up huge for us and provided the platform from which Amad went into hyperdrive.

1. Amad
2. Zirkzee
3. Onana

We have some serious self reflection to do because Brighton will absolutely maul us if we play anything like that against them.

Agree. Zirkzee linked up the player really well. You need that focal point. Hojlund gives us nothing in that department.

I was unable to be at OT and had TV problems but I listened to the match on radio and followed it on here. On 89 minutes I wanted to cry but then Amad gave us a life line, then put us ahead and finished Southampton off in the 94th minute!
After the wonderful win against Arsenal for 90 minutes this was pure heartbreak to think we were going backwards, again, but they kept going, kept fighting which is what we've all been screaming for for years, and, dare I say it, in "Fergie Time" or should that be "Ruben time" got the goals, the win and the 3 points! Tonight I'll dream!

SIX POINTER.

Amad is carrying the team this season. We are truly dreadful, worst Man Utd team of my lifetime. We desperately need a wing-back for each flank, there is not enough attacking output in this team.

Zirkzee changed the game, but boy is Amad special. The players looked knackered from the Arsenal game. Not an excuse for the performance though.

Bullet dodged. Awful for 70 mins. Kudos to Zirkzee who surely has played himself into the starting line up now. Still wouldn't trust this side to go on a consistent run. But to play so bad for long periods and still win is a plus point.

Poor first half but we absolutely battered them in the second half. Many chances didn't go in until the equaliser and then the floodgates opened.
Basic stats for the 2nd half

Goals United 3 Southampton 0
Shots on goal 13 v 5
Shots on target 8 v 0
Passes 294 v 151
