Manchester United 3:1 Southampton

Post-match discussion

I was bellyaching for most of that we needed to get our wingbacks forward. Low and behold we did and our right wing back scores a hat-trick and wins us the game. Don't hold it against me for feeling more than a little self-satisfied amongst all the relief.

The kid's alright ain't he that Amad?

Yoro was getting destroyed at RCB, it must be hard for a rwb to get forward in that scenario. Once de Ligt moved out to rcb it gave Amad more license to get forward.

We will have to be a lot better against Brighton, on Sunday.
Until the changes were made and Amad stepped up, we looked like a team in the bottom 3, already doomed to relegation.
In fact it was Utd and not Southampton that looked like the team with only 6 points and cut adrift on the bottom of the table.

.

I've just rewound the match to watch that second half again. Got to go through the pain to experience the pleasure.

I'm ready to get hurt again.

We made hard work of it but I think we did enough to win that game over 90min. It wasn’t a great performance but I think we would have a different outlook if we put away one of the chances we had in the 1st half, Garnacho’s was criminal! Subs changed the game for us, Zirkzee showed glimpses of the player we thought we were buying and Amad was superb again.

Performance definitely wouldn’t be good enough to beat Brighton on Sunday so we need to find another level somewhere.

I wonder if Ten Hag would have still been in a job if he'd been able to see the obvious talent Amad has, and played him regularly.

You mean unlike during all of ETH’s time when they all played in their natural positions and were brilliant?
Alternatively….we just have shite, unathletic, brainless players who are unbelievably earning a living by playing football at United.
No. Specifically, Yoro isn't a wingback, Mazraoui isn't a LWB, and Zirkzee isn't a 9. They all looked bad when being rammed into those roles. The first two have been excellent, and Zirkzee showed in this game that if he's not the furthest forward then he links play really well and creates chances. Amad is the only who seems to figure it out wherever he is told to play. Bruno goes where the wind takes him, so he's an exception.

What an end game.

Terrible display for most of the game but some positives
1. Amorim's substitutions worked
2. Good performance by Zirkzee, Amad, Onana and Collyer
3. We have Amad

feels like we will be limping all the way to the end of the season.
And De Ligt maybe?

For me Onana is still a bit of a problem, he slows the game down too much, by the time he releasesnthe ball the opposition were already set, other than that he was good.

Bit strange from Amad, in the first 70 mins I don't recall him trying to carry the ball forward from deep, after that of course he was brilliant.

Zirkzee is starting to prove a lot of people wrong, he started us playing and is showing that he has the potential to be a very good player for us.

Mainoo wasn't at the races today, Collyer was solid when he came on, Hojlund was good when he got the ball in space but his hold up play was dreadful

Martinez was decidingly average, he dived in and missed the ball a few times, Yoro couldn't cope with that speedy winger but he's young and will learn

Ugarte, De Ligt and Maz were OKish as was Bruno but not at their best

Garnacho was a bit mixed, he did some good stuff but fluffed his lines a bit to much, Antony was just the latter though I thought it was a bit odd him playing the 10 rather than the RWB, Eriksen I just we could take 7 or 8 years off him

And miracles do happen, I predicted the score correctly somehow!

De Ligt was a beast when he came on, him along with Collyer, Maguire, and Bruno back in midfield made us solid. Southampton hardly got a sniff after that.

Amad moving further forward and the rest is history, Zirkzee did brilliantly coming on too. First half was a car crash, our midfield couldn't handle the pace and Yoro struggled.

So things we’ve learnt…

1) against teams where we expect to have more possession, Zirkzee is better than Hojlund (arguably against all teams but Hojlund work rate and pace is good against likes of city, arsenal and Liverpool)
2) Maguire is our best centre centre back
3) Amad is our only unsellable.

Yoro was getting destroyed at RCB, it must be hard for a rwb to get forward in that scenario. Once de Ligt moved out to rcb it gave Amad more license to get forward.

Part of why he was getting destroyed was the lack of compactness in our team. If our midfield is vacant because they've gone forward to try to fill the gaps in the press, its going to be tough for the defence.

Amorim said it to TNT Sports. The pressing structure made it look like a lack of enthusiasm but its because the team didn't high press well, the midfield got stretched out and then you're in 1v1 situations in defence all the time.

Notably, even with Amad and Garnacho as wing backs, we didn't have that issue into the second half. Simply by defending in a more compact shape that meant Southampton couldn't just stream through the middle of us. Its impossible as a defender to properly defend wide when in your peripheral vision you see players like Mathias Fernandes bombing through the centre waiting for the square ball.

Both our wingbacks needed to step forward so our centre midfield could be more disciplined and provide less space to the opposition. Today was very much like latter stage Ten Hag where everyone was being pulled everywhere and we were constantly facing overloads on defensive transitions.

First win for Amorim at OT?

Bruno should be played in midfield, we have no other player who can progress the ball from the middle and cover the space.

Amad is not a wing back. Play him nearer to the box.

Also, Zirkzee changed the game.
This. I would try to play Bruno as 8 and Zirkzee as SS. We need a new striker or as I think Hojlund does not fit the system atm. He is young so there is some hope but he should be benched now.

Factor in the tired legs of 10 man holding out for an hour (including extra time) v the Arse

Yep, poor old Yoro had a torrid time, his man seemed to jet past him at will

Don't know if they were fatigued but Mainoo and Ugarte were absolutely atrocious, Hojlund needs benching, he is out of form and playing like a striker with zero confidence, Garnacho put in the effort but his decision making and finishing were awful.

Thought Zirkzee was very good, maybe as unpleasant as it was for him the Newcastle substitution was a massive kick up the arse because he has been twice the player since, thought today's cameo was the best we have seen from him, all of a sudden he has gone from lets ship him back to Italy whilst he still has some credit to this guy might actually make it.

Collyer was good and played a very controlled game, would have liked to see something more expansive from him.

Antony, wasn't awful but enough is enough.

Think is we had started with the 11 we finished with we would have been much better, but who could foresee Mainoo and Ugarte being so poor.

Amad is literally the only bright spark right now though, the next 6 matches are all winnable but we cannot keep relying sp heavily on one player

Ignoring the fact that Southampton could easily of had 4 or 5 before we scored

What this game showed us:
1. Amad should play up instead of RWB. Night and day.
2. Zirkzee offers more than Hojlund
3. We still need a striker
4. We still need a LWB
5. De Ligt is class
6. Onana can make big saves when it matters.
7. Collyer adds some physial presence needed. Promising, but too early to say if he is good enough to stay as a squad player at least.
8. Antony should be nowhere near the club. Sell ASAP.
9. Mainoo is not THAT good, or at least should not be a starter yet.
10. Yoro needs more time to adapt but he will be fine.
11. Amorim can make good changes and ha no "favourite players syndrome".

Nailed it

Amad is a star! It's just weird he didn't get aggressive with the ball until the last 20 minutes.

I think it's clear we are better with Zirkzee as the CF because he can actually hold up play and pass the ball. Hojlund might be effective against tired legs as a sub.

I would trade Garnacho for Dibling straight up right now. When they get relegated we should do that.

So poor for so much of that game but I always felt that if we could get one, we could win but I wouldn't have predicted 3-1 considering how late we scored.

Some man Amad is though. The one shining light we have in attacking positions at the moment, he's really stepped up this season and there was another example yet again. A hat trick in the closing 15 minutes of the game, amazing.

The subs seemed to work. We certainly played better after Zirkzee and Collyer came on. Zirkzee in particular was very good with his hold up play and was far more effective than Hojlund.

Some awful performances out there though. Hojlund as I just said was non existent for thr more part. Garnacho very poor in the limited times he did get to make a difference. Antony had a another horrendous miss and poor Yoro had an absolute nightmare of a game. Sulemana probably couldn't believe his luck.

Exactly. Shocking stuff in the first half and start to 2nd wasn't much better. Brighton are favourites on Sunday easily.

Southampton are a good side. This idea that they are whipping boys is arrogant and cartoonish and wrong. United were tired. Mainoo very leggy. I think Eriksen should have been on earlier. Zirkzee too. We missed Dalot. That was great at the end. One of those where I feel sorry for the losers. 1 - 1 as a result would have been a fairer result.

They have 6 points. Stop

I don’t think we missed Dalot, he’s a car wreck of a player most weeks

Ugarte wasn’t poor, I think he was one of our better players in the first half. But he was trying to do too much on his own because Mainoo was poor today

Left the house at 8am this morning to attend that match tonight thank feck for the late rally from Amad to avoid embarrassing defeat or draw.

1st half was the the worst I've ever seen before from a United team in Old Trafford when you consider the level of opposition. Ugarte, Mainoo had like lead in their boots and Yoro who's meant to be pacy was well beaten for pace on a number of occasions.

Said before the game that winning was more important than the performance. 10 points clear of the relegation zone now

Good to see Zirkzee make positive impact again. As for Anthony as frustrating as ever and somehow missed that sitter.

Just think about how massively shit we've been this season, changing managers, systems, a complete meltdown and reboot of the whole club.......and we are still two points above Spurs.
