Post-match discussion

Rooney at the moment looks like he has just been in a restaurant and eaten 25 roast spuds, a chicken and a platefull of steaks. But to be fair to him he has been a great player for us over the years. I just feel he is never going to be the same again. Age catches up with everyone, some a couple of years before others.

We were very lucky today to score those goals, I don’t think we threatened them much otherwise. Southampton had us and they were superior team but after the first Martial goal they kind of collapsed and handed us the initiative. I thought we passed the ball around nicely but I couldn’t really see the plan of our attacking play.

We need to improve a lot of things, especially in attack. Don’t think Schneiderlin – Carrick is the way forward.

Martial was very good today, exciting times.

Massive result, especially considering the rest of our rivals have lost points this weekend.

There were 4 Southampton defenders around Mata so he had a 20% chance of getting on it, and he did. That's pretty lucky.

How about the original shot hitting the post in the 1st place?

We smashed them second half and thoroughly deserved the win. Martial is the best striker on the planet.

Let the goals not mask our terrible performance.

An offside and a mistake was what it took for us to get back in the game.
The offside allowed us to equalize, however we were then comfortably on top until the 80th minute.
Southampton played their game well, but when Mata woke up, we started passing more quickly and they were chasing shadows.
Schweinie took control the moment he came on.
Southampton are going to be some team again.

Southampton came with the perfect plan to start the game - the high energy of Mane with perhaps a point to prove on Carrick. Coupled with other players taking more than a few second each time the ball came to them and hardly any movement really made us toothless and gave Southampton the impetus.

It was really infuriating to see each player hold on to the ball so long, simple thing just moving it with the first or second touch with a bit of movement would have seen us start the game a lot better, we did exactly that for the 3rd goal in the 45 passes. Failing to remember exactly when but, had a similar goal in that great run of games last year. That is the kind of possession based football we need and perhaps LVG's target but, too often that is not what is on the pitch.

Martial definitely looks nothing like a 19 year old I had pretty much not heard about - he is confident, strong, fast, DIRECT and my goodness is he good with a sight on goal. Don't think it's really been mentioned but, his 2nd, I bet he gave the Stekelenburg the eyes because he went him the wrong way - what a cool finish as was the first.

DDG - I was disenchanted by his wanting to go to Madrid and he may still end up doing that. I'll put my hand up thinking - he probably won't be as needed to save us points this season with us having a better midfield and looking more stable at the back but, he really is worth every penny and thank thank goodness he is here, that LVG has brought him right back. He absolutely hates to lose and the anger at Pelle's shot of the post showed that. My MOTM with Martial being very close behind.

Fantastic result after a European game.

Martial has changed the dynamics of our front line. Judging by today's game Shaw will be a massive loss going forward. No idea what's suddenly happened to Darmian over the last few games.

How is it? Once Memphis took the shot on how the hell could anyone predict where it could have went? it went off the bar, and came straight to Mata, that's lucky.
So you're basically saying that Soton's First goal was also lucky?

Yes. Gone from being massively excited over the full backs to being quite worried.

That's the spirit. Let me guess LVG out, Martial a pub team player, Blind is fecking useless, Rooney is WC

Possibly unlike you when I see 1 bad performance I don't overreact and think that we will play like this over the whole season. imo we had a bad performance but I still believe that these players will get going and put in some good performances, I've always defended LVG, I just thought we had a poor game, am I not allowed to disagree with anyone?

You make your own luck.

I mean, you could say all 5 goals today were "lucky"

Our first was offside, and a tackle put the ball in Martials path. His second was a poor backpass. Southampton were lucky that the rebound for their first goal went straight to Pelle. They were lucky for their second goal that nobody bothered to jump with Pelle.

Yeah the last one's a bit of a stretch, but it's a bit baffling how nobody decided to mark him

You have possibly inadvertently proven my point. Both teams were even, no team deserved to win imo, it wasn't a great performance, their performance wasn't good as well, I just think that the reason we scored 3 goals is blinding the performance for some people. This was the same performance as Newcastle, with the exception that we won. The result is better, but the performance imo wasn't.

I think the Carrick/Schneiderlin combo always gives us a control element, but kills our attacking threat. We always seem more offensive when we play the fussball got with one of them.

Would to see him drop Rooney, put Mata or Herrera t No. 10 and Young on the wing.

Thought Mata changed the game after about 25 mins, then when Schweinie came on we had total control.

Last 5 plus injury time was a bit nerve racking, but we stopped letting them get the ball to the wing or lumping it to Pelle before that.

Nah, if you are looking at it from a random chance point of view, then you would say given a one in five chance, Mata did really well to get on it. It was not lucky, it was exceptional.

No that was an example of a striker knowing where to be.
But Mata also knew where to be. I was as pissed with the first half performance as anyone in here but that doesn't mean I have to downplay any good stuff that happened for us during the game.

Big positive is Martial. Southampton had to resort to simply hacking him down. Let's hope he keeps it up!

If you look at the goal again, Mata hardly moves, it just comes to him.

How many passes did Rojo give away today, it was absurd. I can't wait for Shaw to return!

Took us 10 games to get to 13 points last season so we're 4 games ahead of that this time and we didn't get two away League wins till like November so there's definite improvement.

You have a right to voice your opinion. I just didn't get the boring or bad performance.

Southampton played bloody well, that does not mean our play was bad. Once we equalized they lost all confidence and hardly troubled us.

I thought Rooney was at his usual lethargic self, Mata took 25 mins to wake up, maybe Darmian was tired, but other than that I thought everyone was OK, but not outstanding. Blind had a difficult time with Pelle not because he is bad, because Pelle is a bit of a beast.

Teams like Southampton, West Ham and Palace are going to give all the top teams a very hard game.

You really are reaching for anything at this point aren't you to try and downplay a good United win. Soton started well, at home, but, we were good enough to come back and control the game and win it. We were worth the 3 points unlike last season.

OK maybe I was exaggerating a bit when I said it was bad, what I should have said was it was similar to the Newcastle, Aston Villa and Totenham games and was no where near what I would call a good performance.

We had 3 shots on target, they had 8. Yet again we dominated possession (59-41) but we created less chance. We're not an efficient team, it takes us 45 passes to create a chance sometimes whereas other teams like SAFs teams could get it done it 5 passes. Like I said I thought we were lucky on all 3 goals, and also lucky Pelle didn't make it 2-0. Mata, Rooney, Memphis, Carrick, Blind and Rojo all weren't very good imo.

This doesn't mean however that I think we won't be challenging for the League, because I've said all along we will finish 2nd. It's just that I think the scoreline masks the poor performance, but I'm sure we will improve.

Rooney was absolute piss poor, Martial and DDG brilliant. I hope Rooney will be benched, on current form he ruins too much. Schweinsteiger helped a lot once he came on

Expected people to be happy about this result. Turns out I was wrong, we can win 6-0 and some moron will still downplay our victory.

I don't have Sky Sports so have taped it on MUTV. I couldn't really comment on the play, so am actually looking forward to watching it. All I know from what people were saying is that Rooney is shit.
You will enjoy the game, some good football from both sides. Typical PL, one team controls goes ahead and then gets hit and falls to pieces. Then late on a piece of good play increases the belief and the tide turns again.

What was different about this game that wasn't in the Newcaslte or PSV or Aston Villa game or actually any game we've played this season?

Did he just magically telephoto to the spot that he hardly moves from?

Because we move the ball so slowly our players therefore can move slowly up field. But once he got there he just stood still and did not react to the shot coming in from Memphis.

You must have been sitting on the pot for most of the game because we dominated for long periods. I agree we were poor for the first 20 minutes or so but the overall performance was good.
