Good game in the end.

Martial and DDG great.
Rooney and Depay poor

Really not sure Rooney is earning his place at this rate

Thought we were very good after we scored. The "philosophy" works wonders when you're in front :)

I've never been more certain we're going to lose a game. I literally have 0% confidence in us winning tomorrow. City dropping points just means we're bound to lose.

It'll be exactly like Swansea. Lots of possession, no penetration, then bang they'll hit us on the break.

Just because City lost doesn't mean we're bound to lose, football doesn't work like that. And 0% is a bit low I think Sam.

What a fecking game. Never in doubt ;) Southamton started well but Martial turned the tide. Subs did well IMO, Valencia looking confident again and McNair did alright.
Once again McNair looks better with the ball than without it imo.

Very nervy, I was fully expecting us to give it away at the end.

What a day for Martial, I don't expect this kind of form to continue but he makes no mistake when given clear chances.

I'm convinced that Blind needs to be dropped...he is just not athletic enough to be out there.

Good win considering there were a fair few sub-par performances and what appears to have become the average dross from Rooney.

DDG was fantastic and Martial looks deadly, he can even hold up the ball which is a refreshing change.

well, I said earlier that Southampton would tire and we would get into our stride...we did...but at the end it was a bit white knuckle...Martial is a great great buy, not because he will score like this all the time, but because he's a bit of a maverick, instinctive, you are born with that.....you can't train it. Great Great buy from LVG. I expect him to grow and grow, then get bought by Real Madrid.....:smirk:

A 3-2 win is boring? Ok mate.

We had 3 shots on target, most of our play was in front of them and between are midfield and defense. It was pretty dire, idk how can you say an different.

Great win.

Not an easy place to go to. Good positives today. Martial class again. Schweinsteiger superb when he came on. The build-up for that 3rd goal was fantastic.

Still gotta kill teams off better.

Hopefully Rooney improves and we really miss Shaw :(

And DDG is amazing :D

Excellent. We need to stop panicking at the late stages of the game though. It causes our entire fanbase to panic commensurately. Rooney is trash as always... It's scary how he's so consistently shit.

If we hadn't fallen asleep in the last 10 minutes, that would've been as comfortable a second half as you could possibly get.

We've won plenty of games like this under Fergie where people would applaud and say 'stuff of champions'.

Instead people come on here and moan.

Plus we actually played well for large parts.

Excellent 3 points. At times we played some wonderful stuff and the third goal was magnificent.

2nd in the table is right.

Martial needs to score 25 for us to have even a slim chance at the title. We cannot depend on Rooney. De Gea saved our asses once more. LvG got the subs right this time. Tried to give Mcnair some game time but could have turned disastrous. We still need to create more chances per game which is not happening. Good game though

Positives :

Thierry Martial.
De Gea.
General improvement in the final third.
BFS getting better and better.

Negatives :

Shaw's absence showed especially at the end.
Defense still looks very shaky.
Full backs in the final third.
Rooney.

First 25 minutes were as bad as we've played in a long time. Brilliant after that until their 2nd goal, but that was just a nervy finish to see out a game so it's normal. Schweinsteiger made a huge difference when he got subbed on. Bit of a shaky defence though, hopefully it tightens up and we don't miss Shaw so much.

Martial and De Gea are absolutely amazing. Memphis showed a few moments of class and was unlucky to hit the post, he'll get better though for sure. Mata did really well IMO. Huge win though, away to Southampton is a very tough game and it proved to be.

LVG deserves huge credit for ensuring this completely new team is also capable of grinding out results at the same time as its forming. What I liked about todays performance is that the team knows it has the players and is also trusting LVGs instructions. Once we get better at the possession and passing, we will annihilate teams.

2nd place after 6 games with 13 points .... having played average football and been written off by the entire press (and some of our own fans!) : me personally am loving it!!!

We right now look like a young, ambitious and definitely talented swimmer getting ready to take the world by storm with our bright looking future and Rooney is the cinder block tied to our ankle.

All we need to do is cut it and the sky's the limit, but for some reason we just aren't..

Big win, but have we put in a good solid 90 minutes at all this season? We start slow, claw back into the game, usually do what needs to be done, but then switch off thinking the game has already been won.

Memphis Depay is usually at home with his feet up watching the telly by the 60 minute mark. He just shuts down.

Once we equalised, we looked solid and comfortable. Scored 3 goals, and then everyone bar De Gea, Schweinsteiger and Martial was already on the bus home.

A number of positives to take from that I think, but the lapses in concentration are a concern.

Our two deadline day bits of business won us the game, De Gea and Martial.

Schweinsteiger made a big difference when he came on as well, we look more composed when he is around. We made it more nervewracking at the end than we needed to though.

This is the point. Excellent result.

De Gea and Martial superb

Memphis great play to strike the post before Mata scored.

Schweinsteiger looked impressive when he came on. Valencia also did well.

Rooney shocking. Defensive formation a complete mess for 25 mins and poor in the last 10 mins. Blind's lack of pace horribly exposed. Carrick and Schneiderlin failed to protect the defence.

I don't know who writes these live updates or threadmarks but tell me something about jinxing...

We blew hot and cold. Started off bad and Southampton were easily the better team in first half. Second half, after the second goal, there was a clear gulf between them and us. Only in the last 10 or so minutes, they forced us into backfoot again.

We had 3 shots on target, most of our play was in front of them and between are midfield and defense. It was pretty dire, idk how can you say an different.

We had 4, think McNair at the end. We also hit the post.

We were bad for the first 25 and the last 10, but excellent in the middle and that won us the game.

The 5 minutes stoppage time was absolute heart attack material. Gave MOTM to Martial as the boy is just naturally world class already at 19 and with some worldly composure. But i was truly torn as those saves from De Gea were just gob smacking.

Pluses:

Martial - Brilliant
DDG - Saved the game for us there a few times
Schweinsteiger - Was great when he came on
Valencia - Was surprisingly good after coming on

Minuses :

ROONEY - Awful awful awful... I seriously hope he manages to get back on form, but it seems unlikely
Defence - Seemed shakier than usually for sure

Overall a good win and 2nd place only 2 poitns behind City is great! Also we have a lot of easy games coming so that's great news. I'm happy.

To be honest Im not over the moon about the performance. De Gea's stunning save and Martial's composed finishes got us the win, but we were to pedestrian for me. Speed of passing and moving not good enough. The shape just doesn't look right to me.

Not among our best performances but a great result away, against a strong team. We had two standout players who happened to be in the two areas that matter in football - the penalty boxes. They won us the game. Everything and everyone in between was subpar (well, except BFS but he's always the exception).

Glad we got the points but we could've just as easily lost. The score probably papers over the cracks that we are inconsistent and certain players like Depay and Rooney seem to weave in and out of matches.

I'm happy with that. Yes we were poor until we scored but from there on-wards we really dominated the game, besides the final few minutes of course. Martial is looking like an assassin in front of goal right now, never would have expected that having seen his goal record before this. Concerned about how much more fragile our defense looked this game. The Shaw injury seems to have disrupted our organisation there. Didn't help that Darmian came off too. Unlucky for Memphis to hit the post for Mata's goal. It was a good move that deserved a goal, and it would have helped him.

I never get all bothered about fees, so the fuss over Martial went over my head, I was just waiting to see what he had. I was expecting something very raw and naive.
What we have is a born to score striker, different type of player, but hes like Ruud, time just slows when he has the ball in the box.
Hes got a way to go, like all youngesters he drifted in and out of the game a bit, but hes what we have needed, an out an out goal scorer.

for the match, woeful for 25 minutes, played ourselves into the game and got better as it went on. I imagine the second goal would be Van Gaal's idea of the perfect goal, but we got way to complacent at 70 minutes, and thats where their goal came from.
Overall, really good from us for large parts of the game, still a work in progress though. I think Martial and Memphis need some time to get some understanding still especially.

Last 6 shots on target = 6 goals. That's an incredible stat. I'd guess never been done before?

Rooney should get another chance in that role (in case he's still shaking off the injury) but then he needs dropping. Herrera would have been far better there.

Great game. So what if we had dodgy periods and didn't dominate throughout? This is the Premier League in 2015 - every team is capable of making the opposition look poor at times, that's just the competitive nature of the PL. What matters is that we won and showed just how good we can be when we get things moving.
