Cheers:
  • Madrid's incompetence/arrogance in the DDG transfer saga. Thank you!
  • Martial the Man
  • LVG sighting on the touch line
Jeers:
  • Our left flank against a fast forward
  • The last 10 minutes
  • The Rooney conundrum

Absolutely disgusted with some of you here, looking at you in particular @krazyrobus and @Sigma

Its never good is it? A win when all our competition lost vs a very tough opponent, ye thats pathetic. Lets go online and bash LVG for taking home 3 points.

If you look at my past posts you will see that I have always defended our performances, but I thought this performance was as good as the Tottenham one, or the Aston Villa game, I don't see anything that different in both games, apart from the goals scored.

Don't think because there was 5 goals in the game, that it's any different.

You are confusing winning with performance. I said the performance was shit, not the win was shit or the situation was shit.

Anyway, moving on from that, The only thing that separated this win from the defeats against Swansea and PSV were a poor back pass and offside call. Do you think we can expect those every match...

This is the line you back up: "Shit performance. 3 shots on target...1 offside goal, 1 freebie and 1 well crafted goal. Even our supposed strength, our defence was shit today."

Thats not defending our performance when you back up "shit performance".

You are putting words in my mouth mate:

Amazing this thread is dead after a win. It would be 10 pages plus had we dropped points.

And do you expect a tackle like Moreno's not to receive a red card/penalty every match? You can say stuff like this about every match.

Part of the philosophy is pressure without the ball which forces mistakes. Its no surprise this happened multiple times for us already.

I agree our defense wasn't good today. But to judge 11 players performance on the behalf of 2-3 players in defense is wrong.

Impressive we managed to win and (almost) look like we were doing it comfortably considering we had to carry two or three players.

Swapping Schweinsteiger for undead Carrick in this team is a bit like swapping a ferrari for a unicycle with a flat tyre. Darmian looked like a pub player...in that he'd come straight from the pub to the game. Blind is also not a centreback...which I suspect I'll say a lot this season.

On the plus side, our first two subs addressed two of these problems and our third was at least an attempt to address the third. It's weird having a striker in the team who scores goals and makes runs and stuff...I thought United strikers were meant to stand around and be completely useless? Also thought Depay was good again and Mata better than he has been. De Gea is class but we knew that. Should have been playing all season. Schneiderlin had his best game for us so far too I thought.

Rooney was a bit crap but unsure why he's the lowest rated player, when Carrick lasted two thirds of the game being the only player on the pitch making Rooney look comparatively good. At least Rooney was awake.

We won a very entertaining (and pretty even on the whole) game of football... isn't that what footballs about?

I think the main thing that seperated this from the Swansea game was having someone up front who kicks the ball into the goal when the opportunity to do so is there.

Martial's goals were very much in the style of an old great-Denis Law. He's got that electric turn of pace and sublime close control in the penalty area as well as an eye for goal. I said a couple of seasons ago that De Gea plays like Peter Bonetti and today his reflex saves were reminiscent of the old master at his best. Schweinsteiger is pure class and we were markedly better after his introduction. Schneiderlin turned in a very good performance and so did Valencia when he came on. I expect him to start the next game at right back. Memphis came in for some undeserved stick I thought and Rooney, while still out of sorts, played some intelligent football at times but he really has lost a great amount of pace which I don't think he'll ever get back. Mata isn't a right winger but he's a wee magician when he's further infield. Still a work in progress from Van Gaal but at least we didn't resort to lumping balls up for the big man. Where will Fellaini fit into this new United?

Wohoo - 2nd place with 2 points behind City. That's all I care about really. Best league position since SAF retired?

Yo said it yourself "Thankfully someone who sees it as it is." which states you fully agree with his saying "shit performance".

I agree with it to an extent. All 3 of our goals were lucky but I don't think our defense was bad, just the left hand side.

People moaning when we created a bunch of chances and were a bit unlucky and now people moaning when we get a bit of luck and capitalize on it while being the better team for the majority of the match :wenger:

It wasn't perfect but we're only 2 points off of the wonderful, unstoppable, and immovable city. Just take a couple minutes off from your fecking moaning and enjoy what is very obviously progress in a huge transition period.

No laptop + dodgy iPad rivers means I missed the game. Cannot wait to watch the highlights, sounds like a fun match.
I don't have Sky Sports so have taped it on MUTV. I couldn't really comment on the play, so am actually looking forward to watching it. All I know from what people were saying is that Rooney is shit.

The comparison of the Moreno tackle, something rare that MAY have directly influenced the result versus the offside call and bad back pass, something rare that DID influence the result is not valid.

If you call our pressing today the reason for the mistakes that is hilarious. Our pressing was very lethargic today, the mark of a good press is how often the opposition keeper kicks long, DDG did that far more often that Stekelenburg. And yes I am aware that it is probably due to the heat and the midweek match.

Secondly, pressure without the ball does not result in wrong offside calls.

Either way, my point is still valid if you are going to have to rely on offside calls and bad back passes for wins, then we will have to get used to more Swansea and PSV matches and less Saints.

Massive three points after what happened with PSV but meaningless position when the opposition is not pressing and no position when we are attacked . wtf is this?

So true.

God it feels good to have an actual striker playing up top. Now if we can have an actual AM playing as the AM please.

First thoughts:

Great result but extremely painful to watch. Specially first 20 minutes. I couldn't believe what I was watching. I was really getting ready for a rout. We were overran and second to everything.

Thank feck that ref missed Mata's offside. But I will take nothing away from the main man - Anthony. Took his goals very well. Extremely exciting prospect to have. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

Keeping David De God is heaven sent.

Rooney - for god's sake LVG, show some balls now and leave him on the bench for a game. I'm not having our clubs captain and top earner fecking about pretty much most of the game and still walking in to the team while we have Herrera on the bench.

We created nothing really but found ourselves 2 one up. I think it's fair to say Carrick and Schneiderlin represent our most offensively timid CM combination. Mesmerising 3rd goal.

That is a gross oversimplification of what happened but carry on with using it to suit your argument

How is it? Once Memphis took the shot on how the hell could anyone predict where it could have went? it went off the bar, and came straight to Mata, that's lucky.

or unlucky the ball hit the post in the first place. and their first goal should be chalked up to lucky as well.

This game shows the problem with instant opinions on here. People need to wait til the end until judging the performance I think, because after 30min I was in a right huff, but we turned it on and it turned into a good performance and a very good result.

You make your own luck.

I mean, you could say all 5 goals today were "lucky"

Our first was offside, and a tackle put the ball in Martials path. His second was a poor backpass. Southampton were lucky that the rebound for their first goal went straight to Pelle. They were lucky for their second goal that nobody bothered to jump with Pelle.

Yeah the last one's a bit of a stretch, but it's a bit baffling how nobody decided to mark him

We had a 45 pass build-up prior to that and Memphis cut in and almost put it into the net, we built that opportunity and Mata was in the right spot to put it away.
