The Mc Nair substitution wasn't bizzare imo because I think Van Gaal plans to start him in the League Cup.
So I have a question here:
My observation was that Depay especially in the first 30 minutes looked rather lethargic. He wasn't even making the moves to charge down on the midfielder playing the second pass. The Southampton players were taking the ball too easily from him. Whenever he is cutting in he looks to shoot and most teams have figured that out. He has no plan B there. This is the second successive PL game where he has looked pedestrian.
Didn't he assist Rooney against PSV when he cut in? I've seen him try to slip it into Martial or Rooney a few times when he cuts in and doesn't have a shot, in fact him and Martial have had some pretty nice 1-2s. Looks like he has a plan B when he cuts in to me.
I do agree that he hasn't looked quite as sharp but I think there are two reasons for that;
1. He is not completely fit yet
2. Teams are double teaming him every time he gets the ball now
