Southampton 2:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 20 September 2015

Disgusted I missed this. Was in pub in Dublin today and of course they had the all Ireland final on all the screens. Don't care much for GAA, all I wanted to see was the united match. Over the fecking moon with the win though!! Such a massive opportunity after city losing earlier. Is Martial really the next big thing?

I disagree. Watched the replay and thought it was a clear dive and a pathetic one at that. He anticipated Smalling's challenge and tried to win a penalty.
It was definitely a dive. Credit to the ref for not giving a penalty although he would've done well to give a card as well. I think retrospective punishment with video technology should be introduced to stamp this kind of stuff out.

I think this sums up our game and the fact that we didn't play well like I said.
http://www.whoscored.com/Matches/95...eague-2015-2016-Southampton-Manchester-United

Most (51%) of the game was played in the middle of the park with out meaningless passing sideways and the least amount (21%) of the game was played in the third of the pitch we were attacking.
Of course most of our possession was played in the middle of the park. For much of the match Southampton sat back and were very compact and then relied on the counter attack to score (which they were very effective at in the first half). It's difficult to go forward when the whole team drops back into a defensive shape although there are times when we could definitely move the ball quicker and Rooney in particular was guilty of slowing our play down when we were 3-1 up. We did a great job of nullifying that counter threat in the second half though.

So they sat back yet they were in our last third more than we were in theirs...

Yep, agreed.

Strange game, some positives things (de gea, martial, schweinsteiger) but you can't be happy

Pellè looked like Rumenigge...

I agree that we had no significant weakness, the reason was because we normally played the risk-free pass showed by the fact that we played 0 through balls throughout the whole game.

The problem was attacking, and imo we just didn't go forward with any great intent.

Where do these bullshit stats come from?

If Schweinsteiger's ball to Memphis before Mata's goal isn't a through-ball, then through-balls don't exist.

Watching the highlights, checking out the league etc, have to say, delighted to see the worst United team in 20 years 2nd only to the greatest team to ever grace the Premier League.

Feels good man.

Had a go at the journos at the end for saying our defense is not watertight.

"You don't think about what you are saying".

Took us 10 games to get to 13 points last season so we're 4 games ahead of that this time and we didn't get two away League wins till like November so there's definite improvement.

That's a great way to look at a very satisfying win today.

I'm pleased with the resilience they showed. Coming off Shaw's injury and a tough loss midweek we started flat and went down a goal. Still we fought back. This time we had an answer. Substitutions actually improved our chances of winning. Great finishing and a few magic moments. Young players providing crucial goals. The emotional ups and downs of a hard fought match.

I'm happy to experience so many of those classic Manchester United feelings again today.

Seemed to have taken offence when someone asked about the defence not doing well!

Not surprising, it is like an unbroken record. No one commented on the midfield getting dominated in the first 30 minutes. Which resulted in poor passing and considerable pressure. It also assumes if one side play well the other side played gash.
Darmian had a hard time on the right, Rojo on the left and Blind was finding it difficult against Pelle, yet the Saints only really had 4 attempts at the goal. So hardly a shit performance from them considering their protection.
The effort Pelle had which hit the post was similar to the PSV second goal caused by a poor clearance.
Like he said 2nd half Valencia did a job on the saints LW. We never saw a lot of Mane so the defence though not brilliant do not need the negativity thrown at them. Even Pelle was quiet 2nd half, bar the last few minutes.

Just got back from the game, absolutely fantastic atmosphere in the away end today, again. I thought for the first 20 we were terrible and when they scored I thought it was game over, if I'm honest. But from the first goal onwards we were fantastic. Martial is really something for us to get excited about, I was really impressed with his all round performance today. De gea fantastic and a few other really good individual performances.
Great win.

Just me or does Koeman look like Madeye out of Harry Potter?

I'm happy with the 3 points as City and Arsenal dropped points so it was important. I'm very happy for Martial as he is as cool as you like.

The disappointing thing for me is our defence was shaky and it doesn't do any favours when you sub Darmian who has established a understanding with the defence which is already feeling the loss of Shaw. We need stability at he back so just replace Shaw with Rojo or Young and leave Blind where he is at CB. I'm not sure why Rojo came off but why bring on McNair and put him at CB and move Blind to LB when we could have just bought on Young for Rojo and not unsettled the defence even more?
That was a puzzling decision. I thought Rojo was doing relatively well at that stage of the game.
I think he was probably just tired. After all it was his first start in a while, players rarely play 90 minutes after returning from injury. I even called the substitution in the line-ups game. :)

It was really frustrating watching us the first 20-30 minutes. Our forwards actually did a decent job of closing down their defenders and putting them in awkward positions. Sadly our next lines of defence weren't too bothered with helping out so Fonte (or whoever was carrying the ball) had an easy pass available.
I'm very happy we managed to turn it around and at the time thought a Southampton goal would actually give us the kick we needed to get going. That's obviously disappointing we aren't ready from the start. Our second half was very good until the last 10 minutes, I thought.
Schweinsteiger is brilliant, as is De Gea though his kicking seems to have hit a bit of a slump. I'm impressed by Martial, he looks a proper player.
So nice to win after having gone behind! I honestly can't recall when that last happened.
Brugge at Old Trafford.
I didnt think he dived, he was travelling at full pace, tried a skill move to get past the defenders, screwed it up and tripped. He never made any claim of being fouled. No protestations to the ref of any sort. No dive.
Clear dive. He didn't trip himself or anything. He just didn't bother to put his foot down when he saw Smalling coming in.

Positives
  • Getting those 3 points that were vital after City, Arsenal, Pool dropped points
  • Martial - he is a top class talent and still raw but there is something about him that just oozes class and composure.
  • De Gea - My GOD how lucky we have been that he did not go to Real this season. He might be the reason we might win some silverware this season.
  • Magic Mike - Smalling becoming a rock for us at the back and will be vital cog this season

Negatives

  • Talk about we going for title from LVG. Purely from a performance perspective we are looking too lethargic and pedestrian. Points might say we are 2nd but if we do not improve our overall game and luck starts running out, we just might be fighting it out for 4th position again
  • Rooney!! What the eff he was doing I have no clue! Deserves to be dropped from the squad itself and give Wilson some time on the bench. I am surprised he has not been on the bench. At the current rate he is far better bet than Rooney
  • Slow start to the game. Don't know why we start so slowly and let the opposition dictate the game. We wait for a goal or a nervy 20 minutes before coming to life
  • LVG with his bizarre substitution. There was no need to get McNair on. Probably the more logical would have been getting Fellaini on to give Martial a rest. Plus the big guy would have been good at defending crosses and corners.
  • Absence of through balls and taking a chance on your attackers running behind opposition defense.
On a side note, Carrick and Blind had an off game and I expect them to come back stronger in the games ahead.

Thoroughly enjoyed the game. Bit disappointing that we conceded two goals but it was good to be entertained again. Martial, De Gea, and Schweinsteiger were all very good. Hopefully we can keep the pressure on City now.

The sky is the limit with Martial. Every time he has the ball I'm sitting on the edge of my seat. Well taken goals...that turn for the first goal as he sold the defender and the anticipation for the second.

Was very impressed with how we turned it around after the first 20 min. Southampton were chasing shadows. 45 passes before the Mata goal. I can't remember the last time we did that it was like watching Barca. LVG also deserves some credit for putting Valencia on. We looked more stable at the back.

Great Victory. I'm feeling so confident with this bunch. We could bag second for sure and maybe even push city for the title.

Why not ? from about 25-80 mins was all us. The slow start was very very concerning however, could of been two down from the get go.

Think he's really trying to give him minutes.

Cracking result that, didn't watch it live. Going to have a sit down tonight and watch. Anthony fecking Martial, welcome to Old Trafford mate. What a rush he must be on right now.

The frustrating thing is that we do a lot of things right but it's obvious to see why we struggle yet we dont see an improvement. Too often we play the ball backwards or our players turn around instead of facing the opposite team and look for space and to create chances. If we would do that and play the ball quicker, we would really be a very good side

Rojo came on against PSV because of Shaw's horrid injury and it was his first minutes for the first team this season. He's not yet ready to play full 90 minutes I think, so the sub makes sense. We were also 3-1 up as well.

I noticed Rooney in that 45 passes goal, i don't know who passed to him from defense through two midfielders and he could turn an run into attack but he just passed it back and the player who recieved the ball back was really pissed at him for doing that. But yeah in the end it resulted in goal.
But the players reaction tells you that this is not a LVG idea to just pass it back or sideways but some of our players just don't want to take risk. I think we are working on that.

The Mc Nair substitution wasn't bizzare imo because I think Van Gaal plans to start him in the League Cup.

So I have a question here:
My observation was that Depay especially in the first 30 minutes looked rather lethargic. He wasn't even making the moves to charge down on the midfielder playing the second pass. The Southampton players were taking the ball too easily from him. Whenever he is cutting in he looks to shoot and most teams have figured that out. He has no plan B there. This is the second successive PL game where he has looked pedestrian.

Got such a buzz from this match. Before hand I'd have taken a draw, and late on I thought I might get what I wished for!

Obviously Martial and DDG were outstanding, and are quite rightly getting all the plaudits. I gave Mata my MOM. Here's my reasoning; All the possession football in the world is a waste of time unless someone steps up and tries to actually do something with it. For me, Mata was the one who did this. He went hunting all over the pitch for the ball and when he got it he was bursting to create something. Everyone else seems frightened to give the ball away, he wasnt. I thought he made the difference. AND he got an assist and a goal. I thought he was great today. I was especially impressed because I thought he was poor v PSG, so showed character to put in such a confident, positive performance

I would drop Rooney based on that performance. Herrera behind Martial with Mata and Depay flanking would be lovely.

You may have a point, but he wont drop his captain, and rightly so. Wayne will always give everything to the cause. He'll have off days like yesterday, but he'll never shirk the challenge, he'll come back fighting and thats what we need

Rooney and our general play are two different things though. With Rooney it's like playing with 10 men, he's that bad. I wish our general play was more forward, faster and more couragious

"I didn't see Tadic in the second half after I brought on Valencia, you?"
 Rekt. Tadic was quality though, if you look at the fundamental difference between Mane/Tadic and Memphis/Mata the former dribble at people and are always going forward in their play. So many times Mata dribbles backwards and Memphis kind of holds up the ball and dabs it up field in spurts. Tadic rinsed Darmian a couple of times in the first half and it just reminded me that we are rarely taking anyone on and trying to get into the box with the ball at feet. The few times we have, Memphis has scored and looked very dangerous.

What made me so happy about the win, we recovered from a losing position away from home, and went on to kill the game the classic united way, apart from a hairy 10 minutes when it got edgy when it became 3-2. To win a league title, we got to show that character to win games when we go behind in games. Another thing that has got me excited is martial, he has that game changing ability to score out of nothing, a striker who can run at defenders, has the strength and power to make defenders think twice, the worry? he will have to sit out some games because the manager needs to protect him from burn out. So while I am happy that Martial looks like a world class striker, will we look toothless again without martial? that could happen. If depay could bring more magic to the team without martial starting that could help, the defense is a worry especially losing shaw for this season

I really like the look of Depay and he's clearly trying lots of different things but I'm not sure he's quite ready yet for the Premiership. There's clearly flashes of brilliance there and it was his shot against the post that set up Mata's goal but, yeah, he's not quite what I expected yet.

If we can continue to play him and get results then that's great but, in the tougher games, he's going to have to work harder and be more aware of where he is positionally. Watching him play yesterday compared to a player 2 years his junior in Martial, it's clear that Martial is more developed currently.

I, like many, found the first 30 minutes really disappointing. But the way the players turned it around and took control deserves a lot of praise. Really pleased with the performance after that and, as I said after the PSV defeat, there's definite signs that we're looking to combine possession football with more pace and power. It's a work in progress but it's definitely improving.

You watch us draw 0-0 against Sunderland now...

I think we were pretty lucky in general. Our first came from nothing and really knocked the stuffing out of Soton, the second was completely out of nowhere right at the start of the second half which dug a steel cap in while they were down. The third goal came from our usual patient build up so that was a genuinely scored and crafted goal. One we try and carve out. By that stage I think they were completely gone as a unit, you could see the belief had gone.

Felt like a bit of a strange game to me, that is for sure.

It was a good game, first 25 minutes every time Southampton were in on goal I thought they was going to score. At one point I couldn't see how we were going to get back into it but a lovely composed turn and finish from Martial saw to that.

We dominated for the majority of the match, some of our play in the final third was a joy to watch at times. Some of the best we've seen under van Gaal's management.
