Amorim has come in with his system and rather than adapt it to fit his players, he’s decided to run with it and will likely stick with it no matter what hardships he encounters. If Amorim changes his system he’s admitting he was wrong and managers like him don’t like to admit they are wrong. I could see Amorim, like ten Hag, being willing to die by the sword rather than change.
It's becoming apparent that rhe players he has are incapable of adapting to it.

He needs players who are fast, intelligent, technically adroit footballers. The current lot are as slow as coastal erosion and as thick as mince.

We don't have any money so pragmatism is the order of the day.

We can't allow ourselves to be drawn into a relegation scrap on the back of the manager's tactical inflexibility

Waste of an evening watching that, but I found it oddly addictive watching the whole thing.
Like a car crash in slow motion. We were absolutely awful, even worse than I thought we'd be.

Amorim's a little stubborn with his selections, but this loss is firmly on the shoulders of the players.
I can't wait to see 50% or even 75% sold.

Think we have to look at switching things around a bit. In my opinion we look completely unbalanced on the left side, with right footed players playing at LWB. We are such a different side when Shaw plays there, but we all know how often he will be available. Given he’s playing awfully at LCB anyway, would it be the worst idea to try Martinez at LWB ? He’s left footed and generally pretty comfortable on the ball. I’d try that with Yoro, De Ligt and Maguire at the back. That would give us a bit more strength in the air from set pieces too.

Dalot - I'm convinced our opponents know he's going to give him next to nothing with the ball and just give him all the space in the world

Zirkzee - wouldn't be sharp enough to cut a paper bag, likely his last game in a united shirt
Dalot is right footed and can’t go down the line and cross the ball. I don’t know why he doesn’t swap him and Amad over as WB

Newcastle’s midfield unit is an incredibly physical group(could outrun anything), and on their best days, they can pose challenges for almost any team they face. We(Liverpool) struggled against this team because of the physical prowess and athleticism of their midfielders, who are exceptionally strong and tackle hard.

He wasn't exactly secretive about his adherence to the system so you would think a competent football director would have worked out the players didn't fit. Unfortunately we sacked him for expressing concerns about it

Agreed, the players don’t appear capable of implementing his system and we can’t afford to get embroiled in a relegation battle. However, he’s admitting defeat if he scraps his system. He would also be admitting that there aren’t many players in this squad that can play his system and it will need a significant overhaul.

Don’t get me wrong, continuing to do the same thing over and over again in the hope that it will finally click is probably foolish. However, I think Amorim is more likely to go down fighting with his system than set the team up in a way like a Sean Dyche or David Moyes would do to ensure the team grinds out results.

Dream land stuff, I'm afraid.

That's on Amorim. He sent out two centre mids that have to be the slowest combination in the whole league, chucked a right sided player on the left and I don't even know what the justification for Zirkzee was or is.

It's also wishful thinking that anyone under contract will be pursued by anyone. We are stuck with a lot of this rubbish.

That first 30 when we looked like we'd never even seen a football before was worse than anything previous. Should all have wages docked. Watching crosses come in, couldn't make a pass.
Can't wrap my head around how it's possible to be that bad

That’s the worst 30 minutes I’ve ever seen in 30 years of watching United.
Make no mistake, this is a relegation battle. Defeat to Liverpool combined with Wolves, Palace and Ipswich coming in to form spells danger. This smells of Leeds “too good to go down 2004”.

Thought Hojlund did ok, Mainoo was dececent when he came on, harsh on any player being subbed off in the first half but somebody had to come off and he was absolute garbage so Zirkzee can't really complain.

Martinez needs to be rested for a while, he has now cost us more than a few goals in the last games, I know we are toothless in attack but when we are giving goals away it makes it that much harder.

This squad of players is shite, even the worst teams in the league have better players than us, tonight Newcastle were better to a man

Apathy... I'm back to feeling nothing towards a club I'm supposed to love and have joy from or even anger. But nope... nothing, I didn't catch the first 5mins because I was busy and as soon as I saw 0-1, I just felt nothing. Not disappointment, anger or sadness. Just apathy.

I'm still 100% behind Amorim, but we really need a complete haul of the players. I say it again, Woodward, Murtough and ETH has set us back at least 2 years with their transfers and money spending.

Where on earth was he going to find a decent pair of CMs that could do the job? I'm sure he knew he was taking a risk, and he adjusted it by bringing on Mainoo but he hasn't exactly got a lot of options. However, the team looked so feckin cowardly and undriven. They shouldn't need a peptalk from a manager to give their all, they're paid very well and playing for Manchester United. The name should be enough for them to make an effort, but it feels like players see this place as Disneyland.

I agree about Dalot and Zirkzee though, they're not suitable at all.

Me neither mate, it was just an expectation that newc would score and dominate. We seemed to turn up and just hope they were off it and we'd get a lucky 0-0.

Terrible situation.

We used to have Fernandes giving us a moment of magic, Rashford with goals when he’s in form, the finishing of Greenwood… we even had a limited player like Fellaini that we could resort to as a plan B and who could actually defend in the air. This combination allowed us to fight for Top 4 almost every season.

Now, we don’t have any of that.

By buying players that make us and the players excited. A proper striker would be a start.
All I want is players that try. Run and run and run, TRY and make chances

At 2-0 down today they still played so slow, almost as if they didn't want to try and make a chance incase they broke out

The fact that a manager came into the side when he had no time to train a new system. He literally asked to come at the end of the season so he can work over the summer to train the players on the training pitch.

Ruud should have stayed and gone through an interim mode. We could have announced him as manager and let him finish his season at Sporting

Holy feck. I'm glad I missed the game tonight. Sounds about as bad as it has ever been. When a Liverpool mate of mine messaged me to say he was genuinely concerned for United and was putting allegiances aside to make the point, I knew there was cause for great concern.

If Oddschecker is to be believed, BetVictor have us at 14/1 for relegation...

By not forcing a formation on a playing squad that don't suit it, have shown no improvements since its implementation, an inability to keep a clean sheet, very little hope of doing one of those things called a goal and have seen awful results to go with the lack of progression for the system. Yes, this is his preferred (or should that be only?) formation but if so many of this squad are so bad and so many are supposed to be leaving (seriously, unless these blokes are out of contract, who in their right mind would look at Martinez, Dalot, Hojlund etc and think "yeah, we must sign them"?) why are we persisting with a formation that doesn't work and doesn't suit when so many of this current squad aren't even going to be there come August when the season begins?

Looking at that lineup, there was no intention of winning that game. It wasn't even a Mourinho horror show of sticking everyone behind the ball, his selection hung out Casemiro and Eriksen to dry. They're not my favourite players by any stretch but I actually sympathise with them for being sent out like metaphorical lambs to the slaughter, to be overran and devoured by a proper Bruno, Tonali and Joelinton. Tactically, it was suicidal and that performance and result was written on the wall when the teams were announced. You say what could he have done? Started with some legs in midfield in Mainoo, played a style that might not have been easy on the eye or particularly attacking but nullified the threats of Newcastle's midfield. To be so locked into one style, one formation and one plan, if you can call it that, is crazy and the alarm bells should be ringing. This isn't Championship Manager, you can't just set your formation and watch Maxim Tsigalko score 75 goals in a season whilst you win every trophy there is to win without ever having to tweak your system.

Very realistic odds as well. B356 are offering 66/1, in case you’re looking for some sort of emotional hedging.
I’m on at 325/1, 250/1 & now 66/1.

Fair point, but do you really think it would have made much difference in the grand scheme of things. Ruud just benefited from not being ETH in those 4 games. He was our mini bounce.

To be fair, Dalot is still right footed and can't go down the line and cross the ball then either.

We are in a relegation battle and there’s no denying it.
Southampton at home is a 6 pointer
