Manchester City 1:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Uninspiring performance with quite a bit of luck. I didn't think i'll see such a bad City while Guardiola is still there. What a mess they've become. OMG. Bernardo Silva said after the match that they played like U15's players and he is right.

David Beckham literally received death threats and he still turned up every week for us.
He came back after the 98 WC as public enemy number one, and responded with his best season for us, won the treble and was probably the best player in the world. That’s what you call mentality.

Avoided 3rd league defeat in a row today. It happened 5 times in PL era, 3 times under Fergie: october-november 96/97, may 00/01 (last 3 games, league won before that), december 01/02 (when Fergie announced retirement); 2 times under van Gaal: april-may 14/15, december 15/16.

That’s not true to be honest. We used our defence to control the game and created the better chances. We should have won that game and we did. Our weakness from set pieces was visible again.

Big games are cagey and the fact that we didn’t play a basketball game to just “do something with the ball quickly”. Very happy that this is the outcome after only a month with the new manager with very little playing time.

Finally there is a change we have the right guy in the role.
If you’re satisfied with those chances, great. One header at goal in the first half is basically keeping the ball but doing nothing with it.

The amount of possession we had was encouraging, and the lack of chances City created.

Think we've stopped rushing everything like we did in ETH, showing a lot more patience in possession.

Ultimately our attacking play is still a worry. Amad header from Bruno's cross felt like our first sight of goal around 70 minutes gone. I feared the game would end up like Arsenal where it just drifts without us every landing a punch, but we kept going for a miraculous turnaround.

City really are terrible aren't they, it's baffling what's happened to them.

Did anyone see Big Zerk gives the City fans a machine gun send off after the big game? They weren’t impressed.

Papering over the cracks.

We're still in a bad league position and against a woeful City side in bad form.

Huge result, yes I know we are miles away from competing but still going to enjoy it

It's just what he's always like. He shouldn't be put on United games. Some of the comments about the players would be fine on here but are bang out of order from a professional pundit who is meant to be analysing the game objectively..

Exactly. I'm pretty sure at one point he said something along the lines of "I don't know about Manchester Derby. But from United's point of view it's more like a Donkey Derby!" I mean this is in a game with more or less shared possession. A game we were never out of despite being 1 nil down and one in which we went on to win. It's totally over the top. And you can't imagine him making those comments about any other team he was commentating on.

Unbelievable performance with a spine that should would not break. I can't believe all the naysayers still being so negative on this board.

That signings comment was doubly dumb as he said "it's not quite comparable to the Casemiro, Antony window but it's getting there"...Casemiro was really good that season, Antony scored some important goals and we finished 3rd??

It was also literally 2 sentences after praising Mazrouri.

For someone who is supposedly both a football expert and a United fan he really is a clueless cretin
I wouldn't really trust his comments when it comes into building a team, tactics, and players management. Because his track record at Valencia speaks for himself. Let's just leave it at that. He was a joke manager back in the day.

Is he a knowledgeable bloke about football in general? yes because he played for so long. Does he really know what's right for the club to fix the mess they found themselves in? not at all.

The thing that annoyed me more than Neville on commentary was Mike Dean, saying the penalty appeal from Hojlund wasn’t a penalty in a game like this. Ref the match and not the occasion, ridiculous statement from him to make. Dias didn’t get the ball and took Hojlund down, would’ve been soft but it’s still a foul. Outside the box and it’s a free kick anywhere else on the pitch.

Still a long way to go in terms of maintaining performances and improving league position but the result yesterday was fantastic. Wasn’t our best performance but we nullified City very well, Haaland didn’t have a look in all game.

Never rated Amad after his loan spells and the chances he had when he did play for us, happy to be proven wrong. Seems to be progressing brilliantly and fits this system well. High work rate and fantastic on and off the ball, he’s matured and developed in a proper player that we need.
Was sad to see Mount go off and felt for the guy when he was close to tears after all the pain of injuries he’s suffered over the last year or so. I think he would be fantastic in this setup for us, just needs to lose the Phil Jones curse.

Still think we should sack him and hire Gary O'Neil?

It's a big call and I expect Brexit Jim to deliver. RR Martin entering the chat has ensured options are not enervated.

Amorim is three games in and already on thin ice. Can't even defend a corner. His dropping of Rashford is a serious concern, and Bruno should be sold unless we can coax Nuno from Forest.

Desperately need to return to 451 before our relegation fears become realised.

Dark times and the crucial sacking of Ashworth may prove yet fatal. Ellipsis...

 You know that winning games remedies the bad league position issue right? And as bad as City are, we out played them from 10 minutes onwards. Such a weird thing to be annoyed about, United winning the derby.

Amorim alluded to the way they were acting on and off the pitch, how they were training etc. He didn't really go into specifics and spoke more generally about standards that everyone had to meet.

Post-match, he refused to be drawn into specific criticism and said every week was a clean slate so once they trained well etc they'd be contention for the squad like everyone else.
Which was the right, composed way about doing it. ETH got the Sancho thing wrong when all a manager in that position needed to say is 'I make the selection, players need to work hard'. Doesn't need to say anything more/specific about individual players. Amorim got the summation right.

Too obvious, need to try harder

The game wasn't high quality, but the performance was decent most players had a decent game which was the base for us winning, I would have expected old United after their goal to cave in and concede more but we stuck at the game plan.

I thought Ugarte, Amad, De Ligt, Martinez, Maguire and Mazzauiri all had good games and if you look at possession stats it was almost 50.50 which is something we've never been close to at City in years.

I do think there's a danger of viewing that performance through the prism of us being shit and the assumption we all had that we would definitely lose it. I think that was Nevs problem, he was all set to trot out his negativity that he couldn't row back when the shambles didn't materialise. He doubled down and looks silly now

It was pretty much a text book away performance against a top team. Keep the ball, frustrate them, silence the crowd and be in the game till the end where you can try to nick it. If Arsenal had produced that yesterday every pundit would be wanking themselves silly about their maturity and professionalism

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting we're 'back' or anything and no doubt city's form contributed to their lack of urgency yesterday but even so judging the game purely on its own merits we were the better team and deserved the victory in the end

In the light of day I think the most pleasing thing for me was how we stuck to the task, didn't drop our heads and we didn't shift from the system. Clearly they're listening to the new guy

As patchy as their recent form is they're still city, so I did find it impressive we went relatively toe toe with them in regards to possession and such.

Has to be the first time that's happened since 2013? Only Liverpool have managed to pull it off consistently.

What a great team display, all the players gave their all, we completely nullified them and it was remarkable to see we had more of a possession and seem to attack them more in Ruben's 1st derby. Other than corner we defended brilliantly and they didnt have an idea how to attack us.

Amad is brilliant, he gave them trouble all night long and crowned it with gaving us a pen and scoring a winner.

Beautiful morning.

We played well but were still reliant on a Nunes brainfart to equalise.

I was heartened by Amorim's post-match interview in which he accepted there was work to be done. We do get complacent frequently. Hope we can now kick on.

Depends.

I can remember him taking a corner in the first game of the treble season and a resounding cheer going up when taking it. He loved it.

Roy Keane was cheered by us after the difficult Saipan incident in '02 but it got worse for him. Had a meltdown during Sunderland away and Fergie gave him some time off as a result.

Rashie's got to cut his own cord and I sincerely hope he can kick on.

Good thing you're a newbie so you cant post that much.

Even possession AND we had higher pass accuracy. That's got to be even rarer. Granted, we pass around a lot at the back, but so do they.

Ratings are so funny  Mount avg 5.0 for getting himself injured after 10minutes.

Great result. Performance alright, but nothing more. Should have been a dull 0:0 seeing neither us nor City not being able to create anything of note. First we gift them the lead, then they gift two goals back. Awesome result for confidence
If the result is all you take from this match you see football very, uhm let’s just say, differently than I do. To me it showed a well drilled team working for each other keeping spirits high even after going behind and on the up, improving every game. I haven’t been this optimistic about the team in ten years and this performance added to that.

Whats up with this place, on this page only there are 3 posts similar or worse than this one.

I haven't seen a full match of City this season. Wow have they dropped off a cliff. Where has thier intensity gone. I'm jumping aboard the conspiracy that they have come off thier peds

Meh.

There will be plenty of posters willing to type similar nonsense, anyway.

Which is kind of the point...

I think you have to take the Amorim games as a whole rather than in isolation.

So far, so good, in my book. Controlling games and beginning to mould a core group of players. Corners are a concern, but nobody's perfect.

Even with their erratic form, city are a dangerous team and we neutered them effectively. Cut Haaland off with a solid display at the back and refused to be over-whelmed in midfield.

We need to start taking our chances, though, it's the primary concern.

Miserable fella.
You can't fix everything at once. If you can't see the improvement in our play style compared to the Eric era, then go find a different sport

To be fair Bruno should’ve scored from Hojlunds through ball and we should’ve had a penalty. Even though City are in crisis it’s still a solid derby performance when we create more than they do. What we saw yesterday was a losing team on the decline and a wining team on the up.
