Manchester City 1:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

It's a big call and I expect Brexit Jim to deliver. RR Martin entering the chat has ensured options are not enervated.

Amorim is three games in and already on thin ice. Can't even defend a corner. His dropping of Rashford is a serious concern, and Bruno should be sold unless we can coax Nuno from Forest.

Desperately need to return to 451 before our relegation fears become realised.

Dark times and the crucial sacking of Ashworth may prove yet fatal. Ellipsis...
Obvious WUM. Nice try though.

If the result is all you take from this match you see football very, uhm let’s just say, differently than I do. To me it showed a well drilled team working for each other keeping spirits high even after going behind and on the up, improving every game. I haven’t been this optimistic about the team in ten years and this performance added to that.
And I am happy for you. I guess, I lost a bit of enthusiasm during the last years, maybe it'll be back, maybe it won't. I consider myself just as a little more cautious than other fans, not jumping to conclusions when the substance is thin. (Which is not a criticism). Because lets be honest, such posts were here in the hundreds and thousands for Ole and ETH. I am very happy with the result and I won't criticize the performance because it was a decent one, but more than that - not sure a neutral would agree to that.
To be fair Bruno should’ve scored from Hojlunds through ball and we should’ve had a penalty. Even though City are in crisis it’s still a solid derby performance when we create more than they do. What we saw yesterday was a losing team on the decline and a wining team on the up.
This bias's working at its strongest. Nothing wrong with it but I think it is good to notice when it happens. I don't like the outbreak after one negative bad result (even the rather recent trashings) because it is just one game and you can't take too much from one single game, even less from a result.

I’m not at all saying we’re where we want to be. Not at all. But you have to judge the team based on the situation. And this game showed improvement in terms of structure - especially defensively - and belief. It’s clear that the players are learning Amorim’s system even if there’s still a long way to go.

That’s what I mean, I don’t judge the performance on the result here. Had we lost I’d have said the same. And my optimism doesn’t just come from this game, but from the gradual improvement I’ve seen since Amorim came, his statements and how the players have reacted.

For what its worth, I agree that signs of progress are there, I am also quite optimistic about the current outlook. Guess we are closer than it appears but just use different words to express it

It seems so. Also, I agree that knee jerk reactions are worth very little whether after a loss or a win.

I know this is not the City of previous years, but that was a good performance of Man United. More than 48% of possession is always a good sign when you play city (specially away), because their game relies on possession.
The equalizer could have come earlier (clear pen on Hojlund and that 1x1 miss by Bruno...) but MU continued to be organized and more dangerous with the ball in the second half.
Carlos Fernandes has to work out the set pieces, in particular the corners kicks, and he has to do it fast, because that has been the achilles heel of the team.
Overall good performance in a very tactical (dull...) game and excelent result

One of the best bits of yesterdays derby was that I didn''t feel we were overwhelmed at any point. Once they went ahead City seemed to lose some of their intention and as they game wore on they were pushed back more and more.
We had a couple of good chances, Amad's header and Bruno just pushing the ball wide, before the last gasp 2-3 minutes of the brilliant Amad show at the end.

Watching on telly it was hilarious to see the guy behind city's goal with the yellow plastic coat waving his arms like mad to put off Bruno at the penalty, he made the perfect target for Bruno!

In the last few days, to me, the collective comments from Pep sounds very much like he's working his ticket! Yes, I know he's signed another contract, but maybe he knows what is coming 'down the pike' and wants to be well away.... or perhaps its just wishful thinking on my part?

Sorry if i've missed it , but whats the talk around town about what happened with Rashford/Garnacho?? Im hearing in some videos its becoming well known what actually happened? Im assuming it was one of them leaked the team to Luckhurst.

Also, Kyle Walker is an absolute bellend

I see... Andy@Alerton is now posting on caf as a newbie

I do think there's a danger of viewing that performance through the prism of us being shit and the assumption we all had that we would definitely lose it. I think that was Nevs problem, he was all set to trot out his negativity that he couldn't row back when the shambles didn't materialise. He doubled down and looks silly now

It was pretty much a text book away performance against a top team. Keep the ball, frustrate them, silence the crowd and be in the game till the end where you can try to nick it. If Arsenal had produced that yesterday every pundit would be wanking themselves silly about their maturity and professionalism

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting we're 'back' or anything and no doubt city's form contributed to their lack of urgency yesterday but even so judging the game purely on its own merits we were the better team and deserved the victory in the end

In the light of day I think the most pleasing thing for me was how we stuck to the task, didn't drop our heads and we didn't shift from the system. Clearly they're listening to the new guy
It's not just Neville though, we're taking a lot of snide little asides in the media, even when we win. I was listening to the athletic's main football podcast's wrap up of the weekend and they were very disparaging about not only our performance but our team in general, and the impact Amorim has had.

I mean I get it, the game was pretty dour until the final few minutes. But in the same way the comic goals hid what was otherwise a good performance against Forest, it feels like City's run before the game deflected from how much we actually controlled that match. We played it on our terms for once, not City's.

Maybe it's just because those guys on the podcast don't actually follow United that closely (they didn't have any of the United cadre, like Whitwell, on the panel), but you don't have to look that hard to see that we're starting to look much better than the chaos merchants we were under EtH at the beginning of the season.

I really couldn't understand a lot of the negativity yesterday, even before the goals. Yes City are going through a bad spell, but so are we! We have a new manager, system, we are in the bottom half of the league and yet we go to the Eithad and are better (all be it marginally) from start to finish for the first time in maybe 10+ years. They couldn't press, or get in behind us, which is such a stark contrast to how these games usually go.

Losing the game would have been massively disappointing because they were clearly there for the taking, but I'm not sure how many were picking us before kick-off and that was before some of the off-field stuff and gutting early injury

Does this mean we have "turned the corner"? Absolutely not. We are too far gone for one result (either way) to have a massive effect. But it was a positive step in the right direction.

We deserved it. The stats don't lie.

The new commentator on ManUtd youtube channel, maybe it's the same as MUTV... who is he? Kept calling Amad "Emet". Not a lot of excitement after he scored the winning goal as well. Annoying.

I think there was one under Ole, Rashford hit the bar, where we genuinely outplayed a very good City team. As opposed to one in crisis.
They were a bit of a mess in that game, they ended up miles behind Liverpool that year. The next year we beat them at theirs again though, and they did win the league and were on a hell of a run at the time.

It gets worse.

There was a problem with the Uber, so we still got stuck in the traffic
Where were you going to that you needed to get an uber and beat the traffic? The walk back into town is only 20 mins.

On a seperate note, I think that's the most carried away I have gone at a game when that winner went in. Had some fear when I started get messages that I had been seen several times on sky during the celebrations

48% possession against city, when was the last time we were even close to sharing the possession with city!

Are you kidding? Not overwhelmed? Before 80th min, we only had 1 clear shot on target (almost), and bad miss by Bruno. We were defending well but offensively was like a car with a flat tire. The only good point was we didn't give up throughout and kept on running. If it wasn't City's clear mistake, we could have been 3-0 down by half time and much worse final result.

What did City do?

What mistake was it that could have been 3-0 to City before HT? They had no clear cut chances and the Foden shot was the only one where they came close.

We had a stonewall penalty denied (no surprises there) and were quite comfortable throughout the game. At no point did it feel like City would overrun us or we had to struggle to get the ball back.

Our pressing was on point, our passing through their press was also very good and we will only get better from here.

On the balance a draw would not have been the most unkind result, but if anything we shaded it and deserved the win. I have no idea what made you think we were going to be out before half time. That’s Owen level crazy talk.

What game were you watching because it sure as heck wasn't this one

Normally in these games, it is like a walkover or no contest. United will play well in 5-10 mins then City will dominate and create chance after chance. They will win comfortably 3-0 but with Amorim, the players were patient and as soon as the City pressed, we were able to bypass their front 3. I am very optimistic of the future even we miss out of top 4. Next season with new players and players having better understanding of the system, we will concede less and hopefully score more. We may not win the league but I believe we will be quite close.

3-0?! Were we watching the same match?! Whilst I agree we offered little in attack until Amad's header and then Bruno's chance, I don't think City troubled us either.

If anything they were lucky to be ahead at HT. The goal was from a deflected cross that fell kindly. The only other real chance was Foden's deflected shot that Onana turned round the post, although it might not have even been sneaking in anyway.
