Liverpool 0:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Mon, 17 October 2016

If we'd played like that against City, we'd have gotten a draw. If one of our gazillion chances against stoke had gone in, we'd be sitting up at the top of the table now. Margins are very fine.

8 games into the new regime, and I am very content. People expecting miracles, should all just calm down. Good point on the road.

We played them off their own park. That first half was absolutely incredible from a tactical point of view, we pressured them so so well and they didn't get a sniff. They couldn't string two passes together. When you get a chance go back and actually watch the first half hour again.

In the second half we started the same but gradually began to sit back and defend for our point. Only then with Liverpool pushing up and us tiring did the gaps began to form and them to start creating chances. Thank feck for De Gea.

If we had a fully fit Martial and Mkhi we could've actually won that game comfortably. That's one of the best starts I've ever seen at anfield, for me it beats JUANFIELD. The pressure...

Surely surely a midfield 3 like today is the way to go.

We saw how you can stop Pep's City and today we showed how can you stop Liverpool. Get in their face, don't let them run behind your defense, defend deep and in numbers, press and don't let them play their thing. If only we were a bit better up front but I'm not complaining.

Micki should get some game time on Thursday and hopefully Martial will be fit for Chelsea.

I'm not looking to moan at all

I'm desperate for us to have a great season

Well look for the positives, then! People forget we often had to do that under Fergie. Even in seasons when we ended up winning the league. You used to have a great sense of perspective. Away draws against rivals were perfectly acceptable but a lot of people still lost their shit but you were usually very sensible. Don't change!

Tonight was a solid performance and a decent result. We dominated the first half and they did better in the second but, ultimately, Liverpool dropped 2 points. Really not a night to be down on our team or our manager.

Both teams looked terrified at times and considering how fragile we are at the back you should be disappointed that you haven't managed more in front of goal. I'm more disappointed because of how poor we were in the first half. Sturridge, Can and Firmino couldn't get the ball to stick and it took Lallana coming on to really get us going. Herrera and Fellaini did well to disrupt things but we missed the forward thinking we normally have with Wijnaldum and Lallana in ahead of Henderson.

Aren't you slightly disappointed that you didn't show a bit more ambition against a poor defence? You're the first team we've managed a clean sheet against in the league this season and Karius was a bag of nerves.

Still it's a better point for you than it is for us, assuming you get a result at Chelsea.

Oh yeah I've already said we didn't punish you. Just one corner despite a fairly dominant performance for 50-odd minutes. Not good enough. Crossing was poor (usually didn't even put crosses in in crossing positions). Finally put cross in and Ibra misses a sitter when keeper is star jumping in front of him. Poor stuff.

Just find this sneering attitude from Liverpool fans completely misplaced. Onus on you to attack and you didn't. United will definitely attack far more at Old Trafford, I'd be happy to wager on it.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho on BBC Sport: “It is not the result we wanted but it is a positive result, it is a result that stops a direct opponent getting three points at home so not a bad result.

“The game was difficult for both teams but for longer periods it was more difficult for them than us.

“We controlled the game not just tactically but the emotion of the game, that was probably the quietest Anfield I had and I was expecting it to be the other way.

“I think was a positive performance.

“If you analyse the game see the reason why did it, playing Young and Fellaini. We had control of the game – there were two amazing saves by David de Gea it’s true but they were out of context.

“The reaction from their crowd was permanent disappointment. People expected us to come here and be really in trouble, which we were not.

“The team was always comfortable, we lacked a little bit of sharpness in more attacking positions. There was a moment I thought about playing Rashford in the Pogba position behind Zlatan but then the kid had cramps.

“This is a point that stopped them winning three. Other candidates for the title have easier fixtures at moment and it is important to keep close to them – our opportunity to get five wins in a row will come.”

Only Rashford and Valencia clocked a higher top speed than Rooney today. Its baffling how fast he is, given how slow he looks

Statistics like that are relative. One of our fastest players (Martial) wasn't playing. Our CBs were never going to clock high speeds because they sat deep, and they're both faster than Rooney. Shaw also played very few minutes and was sitting deep, and I'm sure he's faster than Wayne as well.

Jose post-match reaction:

- United started well, were in control of the game for long periods
- Liverpool chances were against the run of play
- United influenced the atmosphere in the stadium
- The players abided by Mourinho's plan from a defensive point of view
- If Zlatan scored his chance, it was "1-0 good bye match finished"
- Wanted to play Rashford behind Zlatan but he had cramp, so had to be subbed off
- Having 35% possession was part of the plan
- Liverpool are a good team, "not the last wonder of the world" like the media thinks.

Here it comes, the old ''we're manchester united, being pragmatic shoul be beneath us''...
Nope, not really ... Not sure what you are responding to. Pragmatism is not part of this discussion I am afraid. It is about what you build to. If you build a team that is capable of going out and playing, it is going to go out and try and play. If you don't, it is going to go out and react. We are sadly the latter and that's not sad because we are entitled Manchester United. It is because we are rich and big. Any team that has those two advantages should rightly set their standards higher whether it is Manchester United or whoever.

Spot on from Jose.

I think it's becoming obvious where our faults lie, hope we reinvest in our attacking options (or play Martial and Rashford!)

It was a great time to play us, we are a complete mess in midfield at the minute and you've started the season well. If it was the other way round I'd be fuming.

I'm really not upset with a point I said before it was going to be tight.

I'm looking at the bigger picture.
Chelsea, arsenal and spurs away 7points
You guys at anfield 1. I think any team would take that.

I'm sure the players are satisfied and that this will be a morale boost. We will get to the playing well regularly soon, right now we need to stay close to the leading bunch. Pogba and Zlatan getting destroyed on the forums is nothing that I didn't expect but I'm pleased with them. I remember Ronaldo not excelling at Anfield every single time. It's a difficult place to play, all of our signings (bar Mkhi who hasn't played almost) have been very good this season for me. Happy with the result and the manner we executed the manager's plan. Good point.

Happy with the result although the actual gameplay was poor. Defensively solid, but that's expected when you play with 2 fullbacks and 2 wingbacks at the same time.

Fellaini played well, Herrera was immense, but at the end it still took 2 wonder saves from De Gea and a fantastic tackle from Valencia.

Their defence looked weak, especially their goalkeeper, so I'm disappointed that he wasn't tested more.

Suppose I agree with all of that, but still disappointed we didn't try to win the game more.

Good comments, and I like the last part. :)

Seems some are happy with this result, I don't understand it though.

Last season you took 6 points from Liverpool in the league, they were also missing two key players and played extremely poorly. To have one shot on target and practically play for a 0-0 for a club the size of United, is just wrong. Also don't think Liverpool have been as impressive as being made out this season.

Could understand it if United were top or it was an important game later in the season. Whilst DDG was the sole reason United got a clean sheet.

Good enough result. Utterly rubbish in terms of excitement but that's how big games pan out. We still lack creativity in general. Need Martial and Mkhi to really step it up in the coming months.

I think games that get as much hype as this usually end up tense affairs. Blame the media.:)

Completely agree

We had the better chance tonight. Liverpool are currently a far better team than they were last season. Anfield has always been an extremely difficult place to go.

I'm happy with a point because I didn't think we would get one.

Liverpool is a derby game and it's always been tough. Literally when we were at our peak, I still was happy with a point at Anfield. Fergie was happy with it too. This revisionist idea that we'd never be happy playing like this at Anfield is nonsense. We're usually shite here too. Furthermore, Liverpool are a much better side now than they were over the past two seasons.

Given the number of people here who were predicting a defeat, I'm surprised there are so many still moaning about the result.

People who predicted 4-0, 4-1 etc hang your heads in shame. You need more faith in Jose.

All due respect but save us your sanctimonious act.

United proving again the myth of the Anfield crowd.

Literally only make atmopshere when the team is in some kind of ascendancy or winning comfortably.

Absolutely no support when team is struggling and most need the support.

Mourinho is right about the scousers, they're just a bunch of flat track bullies. I know we didn't play that well but they looked bang average.

Just landed at Chicago, so missed the game, but 0-0 seems a bit of a disappointment really, I expected us to win.

Be interesting how the neutrals viewed the match, as on here, you just don't get a good feeling, other than 0-0 at Anfield, I'll take that.

We played much worse at Anfield last seaaon.

It's a good point.

We didn't play for a 0-0 either. We just set off to be more solid defensively but really didn't park the bus. Just that our attacking players were poor.

We need this sort of rigid defense in most of our big games but with a bit more flair upfront.

Has anything been said about M & M? When they're expected back?
