Liverpool 0:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Mon, 17 October 2016

Just landed at Chicago, so missed the game, but 0-0 seems a bit of a disappointment really, I expected us to win.

Be interesting how the neutrals viewed the match, as on here, you just don't get a good feeling, other than 0-0 at Anfield, I'll take that.
It'll be rewritten as a bus parking effort.

It wasn't. We stifled Liverpool and they looked like Van Gaal's United.

I think games that get as much hype as this usually end up tense affairs. Blame the media.:)

I wasn't expecting a swashbuckling performance from us. But we need to create a bit more. And we showed against Stoke/Leicester/Soton that we are capable of. Think we just had the plan to be cautious and get a point at any cost. Defensively and tactically from that point of view, we were great. Lacked pace and definitely missed Martial provided he would have been in form. Similarly all the unnecessary fuss about Gegen this Gegen that and Liverpool's attacking prowess was too much talk. In the grand scheme of things, it is a decent result.

I've given Valencia MOTM and 10/10 just for that last-ditch tackle...

35% possession and only created a single chance while spending so much money on our squad. We are just not good.

Oh yeah I've already said we didn't punish you. Just one corner despite a fairly dominant performance for 50-odd minutes. Not good enough. Crossing was poor (usually didn't even put crosses in in crossing positions). Finally put cross in and Ibra misses a sitter when keeper is star jumping in front of him. Poor stuff.

Just find this sneering attitude from Liverpool fans completely misplaced. Onus on you to attack and you didn't. United will definitely attack far more at Old Trafford, I'd be happy to wager on it.
I think Ibrahimovic was assuming someone would be coming in at the back post. Yeah I was expecting more set pieces from you to be honest. That's where we've been weakest all season and you've got the players to threaten.

I hope you do come out a bit more. It might give us a bit more to work with up top but we'll see where both teams are at when the game comes about.

Good comments from Jose. Makes me feel reassured, so hopefully the same for the lads. We'll be fine, but we need to be patient and let him do his job. And I agree with him, we need to be solid and stay in touch at the moment. Yes it would be great to win everything, but let's not put any more pressure on the manager and players in the meantime.

The last 25 minutes or so were probably a bit bus parky.

I thought we were the better team up until the hour mark though.

Seems some are happy with this result, I don't understand it though.

Last season you took 6 points from Liverpool in the league, they were also missing two key players and played extremely poorly. To have one shot on target and practically play for a 0-0 for a club the size of United, is just wrong. Also don't think Liverpool have been as impressive as being made out this season.

Could understand it if United were top or it was an important game later in the season. Whilst DDG was the sole reason United got a clean sheet.
We fluked a 1 goal win at anfield last season despite getting overwhelmed for most of the game. We got shat on in the cup game. While I'd love for us to suddenly overnight turn into an all conquering team, it would be a bit far fetched. So I'll take this point away at Liverpool looking at the football we've played over the last 15 months.

However yes, with time I'd expect us to play more dominant football, for sure.

Read the first few pages of this and am flabbergasted. Any rational being would have said we'd get done today. We were dominant ( if not completely effective ) for so long. Good point, better performance.

LVG's good league results at Anfield were an aberration. I thought we had a good, professional performance despite being a bit threadbare on the wings. You need players such as Martial and Mkhitaryan if you want to pick off teams on the counter when defending deep.

Happy with the result.

Considering we havent beaten United in the league since the 3-0 with Suarez, and its the first game back after internationals. Ill take it. We looked nervous.

The 'old liverpool' (assuming we have changed for the better) would have won this game then lost/drawn to West Brom to "make up for it".

Mourinho slowed the game down, and instead of us panicking and losing our heads like last time, we played it cool, we realised we werent going to get our fast game going and just went with the flow. Dominated second half, could of had two.

Anyone got distance covered stat for this game?

Jose was right about the atmosphere there tonight. They believed their own hype and thought they'd trounce us within 20 minutes, miles worse than anything we'd serve up against them at OT. Decent point but we need to get a run of wins going soon.

It's that sort of self entitled attitude that has us in the post Fergie rut in the first place.

Us "being Manchester fecking United" doesn't exactly transcend into the real world. Anfield has always been a nightmare to play at, we lost here a lot under Fergie and most of our later draws/wins with him were played in a very similar fashion to tonight. Right now Liverpool are also in much better form than us.

get off your high horse.
Before you start telling people to get off their high horse, you might learn to understand arguments and respond to them? This has nothing to do with entitlement. It is about the simple fact that finances and status in football come with expectations. I was saying the same about Chelsea and Liverpool under Rafa. Same about Real in those games against Barcelona when they set out to nullify them. I have the utmost respect for teams like Atlético and Inter and the way they played/play because they have to compete with riches and resources beyond them. If you however are one of the richest and biggest clubs in the world, you have to aim higher even if you don't pull it off, your aim need to be making others pragmatic against you. You should be the one setting the tone to which others dance to.

As for your point about our performances there under Fergie, I agree with you, we never played well there and it is unfair on that basis to judge Mourinho on how he fares at Anfield. His history however suggests that this is the norm rather than the expectation which I'd be very happy to be proven wrong in the future. The other point is that under Fergie, it mostly felt like we were outfought or that the game was simply too awkward and tense. Tonight felt like we specifically set out to stop them as though they are some mighty force. The sad thing is that José was in fact right in this approach, the question though is why is that all we can do?

Disappointing.I believed beforehand that we are better than Pool and should we.
I still believe it.
We stifled them well but we offered very little attack wise.
I think our best 11 would include Martial & Mkitaryan.
Liverpool are nothing special.

Well we beat Klopps Liverpool in anfield last season

And it was by far a more positive performance than tonight

I'm not overly complaining though

I'm relatively pleased with the point. But it's such a forgettable game....I'm finding it hard to remeber a Utd performance quite like this before
It wasn't really a far more positive performance. We had zero control of that match and were helped by awful finishing by Liverpool.

Not the same Liverpool as last season and we played even worse in that game and stole a win, we were also missing key players in Mkhitaryian, Martial and Shaw. Also you seem to have conveniently forgotten our two European performances against Liverpool last season where we were bringing on defenders despite being 3-1 down in the tie.
We're re-building, we need to not be deluded about it and think just because we're Man United we should do this and that. Of course in a perfect world we'd love to go toe to toe with Liverpool and attack from the offset but we came here as massive underdogs and a pragmatic approach was probably the best one.

Also De Gea had two saves to make, considering that was against a Liverpool side who have on average about 10 clear cut chances a game, that's not bad.

Also we didn't exactly have a great performance there last season in the Europa League when it mattered.

Happy with that point, thought we were really good first half and the way we started surprised me. A few have said Liverpool were rubbish and havnt played that bad since Burnley but I think that's because of the way we got in their faces.

I loved the start, the tension, passion showed, I don't get why people are complaining it was boring, I didn't breathe for minutes on end then realised and had to take a deep breath :)

As for not being happy with a draw away at anfield, nonsense, it was a good point.
Pointed out during the match that Fergie won 30/63 games against them so it's not as if we are used to winning there anyway, bar the last couple of seasons.

No you couldn't, as both shots were hit as well as they could be under the circumstances and both were saved by a keeper, you know, he is officially a player as well and he did his job.

Early on in the first season with Mourinho in charge. Coming up against an in form Liverpool at Anfield. 0-0 I will take it.

I wasnt talking about Coutinho's.
And the other was Firmino's, whos touch let him down. Second Half was ours. you stopped pressing

MotM Valencia for that tackle, saving a certain goal.
2nd Ander.
3rd DDG.

Thought Poga had a decent game. Would like to see the distance covered by him versus others. He was being asked to do a lot of running, and looked tired when we had the chance to break.

Ibra had very little service apart from that one chance which didn't look easy to convert.

Was hoping for Martial to come in for Young at some point who offered very little going forward. Rooney sub was pointless, and could have cost us.

I thought Rashford and Blind had poorer games.

Don't see the point in comparing previous results. 3 of our last 4 league wins against Liverpool were against Rodgers, the 4th one came in an equally boring game and was won after a deflection off the bar against a team that wasn't fully Klopp's team. People are also forgetting that shite Europa League tie, our first European game against Liverpool. Looked pathetic in the away game and could only get a draw at home thanks to a penalty.

This season they've got the more settled team, we're still wildly inconsistent.

Where was Player of the month and signing of the Season MANE today? Some of you not giving us enough credit.

Drab game. Defensively spot on, Rash is lost on the wing and didn't look comfortable at all - especially first half. Pogba still not settled at all. Zlatan was deprived of service but generally was more Miss than hit today.

Shame off the bench we didn't have Martial or Mhki to try stretch Pool. Take the point but we need to be more fluid up front.

Herrera is a loveable bastard.

So much for the scouse tonking is though :D

United should be disappointed that they didn't create more chances than they did in the first half. You had your tactics spot on and didn't allow us any room whatsoever which is the right way to play against us, especially in the beginning of games. Barring one awful Zlatan miss and some long range shots you didn't really create anything. Contrary to most people I thought it was an entertaining game, really high intensity and both teams looked like they knew what was at stake tonight.

Second half was a different story, many will probably disagree but I think we're unlucky not to come away with three points after the chances we've had. You'd expect Can's shot to be saved by most competent goalkeepers but Coutinho's wasn't a goal only because De Gea was between the sticks, fair play to him of course for the exceptional save. The game completely changed when Lallana came on, tonight clearly showed that Sturridge has no right to be in our starting XI and I'd accept any bid above £20m for him in January or next summer. I'd rather see Ings or Origi play than him at this point. All in all I'm pretty satisfied with a point, still only two points behind first place with West Brom, Palace and Watford coming up, two of which will be played at Anfield.

Fellaini, Valencia and Herrera were very very good. Pogba was atrocious and Zlaten was poor as well, I'd like to see Rashford up top if I was a United fan.

I find the comments from people who are shitting on our performance perplexing. Mourinho set the team out to play a certain way against dangerous opponents and succeeded. We were never going to go gung-ho or play expansive football.

Whether you like it or not, Klopp's Liverpool are a force to be reckoned with. At Anfield too, nonetheless.

This is the same team that beat Arsenal 4-3 away, thrashed Leicester, drew with Spurs at WHL and beat Chelsea away. I consider this to be a good point for us.

We should have taken advantage when we were on top in the first half. About the time they subbed in Lallana, you could see the balance was tipping in their favour and I feared the goal was coming for them. They seemed to have more penetration with their possession in our half than we did in theirs so I'm happy that we defended well and didn't give away a silly penalty or free kick on the edge of the box which I was expecting us to. In hindsight, it was a solid defensive performance from us and good to see that we could lock up shop against an in-form team. I expect a very different game against Fenerbahce and a similar but more threatening performance when we have possession against Chelsea. Jose needed Pogba to do more going forward tonight. He did well for the Ibra header but didn't do nearly enough for me.

Defensively very solid but we tired in the second, understandably. I am happy with a draw considering the kind of form Liverpool have been showing.

MotM for me:

1. Herrera (who had a great game)
2. De Gea (two great saves)
3. Valencia (for that tackle)

Are any of you concerned about your form out of interest? 5 points from 15 now and one win in five with Chelsea away next. Chelsea is a must win now surely? I'm not trying to WUM, just genuinely interested to hear your thoughts on it.

Dont have a figure, but saw it on the post match.

From memory:

Henderson was on top slightly short of 12k. Our top 5: Fellaini, Pogba, Herrera all very close behind at around 11.5. Iirc, Ibra was fourth with 10.xx and Young 5th just shy of 10k.

Thank you.

Martial wouldn't have added much on the wing. His passing choices often leave a lot to be desired and, in a game of low possession, he would have frustrated as much as Rashford (who suffers from the same problem).

Martial up top instead of Ibrahimovic, however, would have stretched the game a lot more.

Watching that game, I think we're crying out for decent passers in the final third. All our attackers are prone to making the wrong choice far too often. They take risks when a safe pass is the correct option, and play safe passes when testing the defender is the right way to go.

The only time I feel I can trust the man in possession is when Valencia, Blind or Herrera have the ball. That's not good enough.
