EL L Europa League Round of 16 1st Leg

Liverpool 2:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

I know I'm just a mere female, so can someone explain to me why Rashford who scored four goals in two games is put out on the wing, and Martial who has been used on the wing virtually all season is brought into the centre?

Not knocking Martial at all, but why interrupt Rashford's momentum?

Coz the plan is to play like shit. Make players look stupid and then tell the world that they aren't good enough. What was the Carrick sub meant to be? Mata+ Herrera in midfield - 4 wins. So it's time to sort that problem, right?

How we have fallen, playing a mediocre side on a Thursday night and are lucky to get away with only being 2 down. Liverpool thoroughly deserved there victory tonight. They didn't have to work very hard for it either. De Gea was the only positive performance tonight. There is so little to enjoy from this United side, embarrassing display tonight. The board have let the club down by not getting rid of LVG. We had time to do it but they had no balls to make the call. I just wonder where we would be if Jose had came in after the Stoke game, even the Norwich game. A whole transfer window to do obvious things like getting a center back to partner Smalling. Bring in a new striker ect. So many problems at the club at the moment. I wish the senior players would play with as much heart as the younger lads like Rashford, Varela. Spineless performance from a joke manager.

It really is. I don't think there's anything that compares to what's happened to United in the history of international business. Perhaps Enron, but at least those guys were ambitious.

Enron was an orchestrated scandal. This isn't orchestrated. And it's happening in plain sight. We are run worse than Newcastle.

I take it my decision to stop watching this game after the pen was justified then haha

Meanwhile I've just sat through an awesome episode of breaking bad (I'm a little behind I know) meaning I'm not even angry From watching another gutless performance like the replies suggest here
No not at all, cause it doesn't matter whether we won, or lost, you still look like someone who can't support his team through the shite.

EDIT: haha

I'm starting to hate De Gea. He's a pain in the arse! Good win but there's still a job to be done. If we score at Old Trafford I think it's over.

Neither of us will win the Europa League I don't think.

Only positive is its one game down till the Dutch fraud goes. Players were a disgrace.

Entirely unacceptable from the players and coaching staff.

We did better with kids against Arsenal. Play the fecking kids, at least when we lose it'd be understandable and we might find a gem here or there.

Honestly don't feel that bothered when we lose anymore. It's just entirely predictable the games that we will lose. Everyone is just waiting for LvG to get sacked so United can start rebuilding, but as always, the useless cnuts we have in charge aren't willing to sack a manager early because of how expensive it is.

We made them look good. Schneiderlin is possibly one of the worst cms I've seen play for us. He offers absolutely zero in all departments. Martial is not experienced enough to hold the ball up, was constantly running under the ball and no one bothered to break with him from midfield if he did by some miricale bring it down. People like Varela, rashford, fellaini and depay didn't have that bad of a game, but when the fecking spine of the team martial, Schneiderlin and Smalling are sh*tting the bed when the ball comes near them, I'm not sure what anyone could of done in that team.

Terrible game, absolutely awful from us. Thought the ref was crap, although they deserved nothing less, the two goals should never of stood. Not sure how, if a foul starts outside the box and goes in, you give a pen. Was offside for the second, but what the feck was Carrick thinking.

Words fail me. I'm a staunch LVG supporter, but tonight, the players are not bothering to do anything, not talking or performinv and sadly that falls to the manager. He has to go before the summer.

First BIB - Schneiderlin was good before he came to us - too many players are failing at OT for it to be coincidence. Did you see Di Maria last night? This is more than just under-performing.

Second BIB - Why???

It's over already, congrats. There is no character in the team and the fans have given up on Van Gaal. We're not turning this around.

Lets face it the club we knew is dead, it's been annihilated from within. I barely feel any emotion with this bunch, or even football in general any more. They appear to be wearing United kits out there but it can't possibly be the team I grew up supporting.

You score an early goal against us on the night and it'll crank the volume up and anything could happen from there. I'm not going to assume anything until it's over.

I only watched the last 20 min or so on my cellphone and I must have banged it in frustration about 10 times.

This is not good for my health.

LVG post match interview:
- United could not cope with Liverpool pressure, atmosphere was fantastic
- DDG excellent
- Liverpool scored two 'cheap' goals - penalty harsh
- Henderson aka 'the guy who gives the pass from outside' was offside
- Fellaini was one of the best players on the pitch :lol:
- We have to create a similar atmosphere to Liverpool in order to win in the second half

Given up, don't feel anything anymore, cannot believe we've let it go on so long.. Woodward and the board fully to blame now

I genuinely despise him.

I went into this hoping to only lose by 1 goal. To lose by 2 is disappointing but I'm not tearing my hair out. And that is a very very sad thing to say.

We made a very mediocre Liverpool side look like CL winners, is there anything more to say? We deserved nothing and LvG should thank DDG because the latter saved him from utter humiliation tonight.

Tactically, LvG messed up everything by trying to outsmart Klopp. Putting Varela to track Coutinho all around the pitch was a woeful decision. It left a huge gap on our right wing for Liverpool to exploit with good off the ball movement and late runs in the box. Furthermore, it gave Moreno the freedom to make forward runs all the time. On the other hand, Rashford had to operate more or less as a wing back which was something that isolated Mata and Martial upfront and didn't allow us to expose Moreno's weaknesses at defending.

The change of formation wasn't a good choice either but a reminder that sometimes all you need to do well is the simple things. He thought he would fix the problem with Coutinho by changing formation but Liverpool were simply targeting Carrick's (at CB) week feet during the second half. If there was a place for Carrick today, that was in a midfield of three with instructions to drop deep and cover for Smalling when the latter was forced in the wide areas.

But what baffles me most is the way to set up to build attacks from behind. Now, we all know that Klopp likes a very high and aggressive pressing and we also know that LvG wants us to build our attacks from the back. Who did we have to get the ball forward? Hold your breath, Scneiderlin-Fellaini-Rojo and Varela. With the exception of Varela maybe, this is a recipe for disaster against a Klopp side.

Mata, Memphis and Martial were non existent but they were very isolated too and they had no one to give them the ball either. Mata is a player who needs enough space and time on the ball to do his thing but when the team doesn't provide him that, we look like playing with one player less on the pitch. Martial isn't in good form after his return from injury and Memphis was his usual self. But both are very young and inexperienced to lead the attack and carry the whole team on their shoulders. Others should do that and these "others" are nowhere to be found in our squad.

Let's hope we keep it plain and simple come Sunday, right Louis?

There were only 3 changes tonight from the line-up that beat Arsenal. Tonight's starting team probably had a younger average age. The idea that we beat Arsenal with our kids is fantasy

Exactly - they were brilliant, then they're dropped, and now they're likely to be as demoralised as the rest of the players. It's like the manager is doing a hatchet job on the whole squad.

Rio and Scholes getting well and truly stuck in - and I cannot disagree with any of their points. I hope someone uploads the post match rant.

I'm starting to think LvG knows Mourinho is replacing him, so he has decided to feck things up as much as he can out of spite.

We'll approach the game the same way and fail to create feck all, but at least we'll do it a backdrop of noise.

Enron was an orchestrated scandal. This isn't orchestrated. And it's happening in plain sight. We are run worse than Newcastle.

Well, I think the lack of orchestration is indicative of an orchestrated attempt to bring down the club's (fans') expectations. We're slowly getting used to the idea that we're not top dog and can only spend a max of 30m net in the summer. What happens next summer? Net profit on transfers? The club needs major investment and the owners, the management and the players must know that.

Carrick and Herrera were dropped from tonight's line-up from the Arsenal game. They're not kids.
