FA W FA Cup 4th Round

Manchester United 2:1 Leicester City

Post-match discussion

Rubbish performance overall. Felt like the players didn't want to be there. Leicester had us pinned in and utilised space far more effectively than we did, particularly in the first. Subs changed the game and we did well to turn it around. Thought Yoro grew into the game as well and performed well. Decent performance from Dorgu as well.

Becoming a key feature in every game that we have to make a half time substitution, regardless of opposition, to make positive changes. This should only really be happening infrequently in those games that just haven't gone to plan. It's currently our norm. I just think the fitness levels of this team are levels behind what is needed to be competitive.

Hopefully with 8 days before Spurs we can recover and see better level performances from Amad, Fernandes, Ugarte, Maz, Dalot etc. They just seemed gassed to me.

Chris Sutton was right, even if he wasn't confident

It's amazing how many surprise results there have been in the Premier League this season, but the one constant has been that United have been awful throughout.

I have absolutely no confidence in this prediction but, based on how poor Leicester have been recently, and also their heavy defeat by Everton last time out, I think the holders will find a way of winning this tie in 90 minutes to make it into the draw for round five.

One way to lose the locker room is to play strange lineups with positioning that doesn't make sense. Amorim playing Dorgu as RWB and Dalot as LWB could be one of those things that players start losing confidence in the coach. It just doesn't make sense for so many reasons. One, Amad is better as a RWB so not playing him there is weird. Two, we been starved with good crossing from the left since Shaw was hurt and Dorgu would help that situation. Three, Dalot doesn't add enough attack and we have a terrible attack at the moment.

Maybe Amorim loves Dalot and doesn't want to leave him out. However, he needs rest and rotation and this would have been the perfect match. In addition, Dalot could be a decent RCB or LCB when needed so he will get playing time.

Sad to see Mainoo struggle. I still think he could be a good AM and we should try partnering him with Bruno. Collyer and Ugarte can be the DMs.

Don't lose the locker room and the fans, Amorim.

Football is about risk. If Amorim continues to sacrifice creativity and attack for possession, I don't see him lasting at United. He will be out of the door by end of next season.
Almost every time we won the ball we passed back to the CBs.

Winning is the ultimate goal but without quality play we will never progress forward.

When evaluating the game, keep in mind that Leicester are almost guaranteed to be relegated yet they played well against us.

I hate that it doesn`t seem the players are allowed to attack until we are a goal down and chasing with 20min to go. We can attack, we can create problems for Leicester, but we choose to just pass it backwards all the time, just trying to keep it safe… IT DOES NOT WORK RUBEN!!
I'm sure Amorim knows this, that's why he berated his players at half time for the lack of urgency and also made the subs.
Clearly he wants us to attack and dominate from the kickoff.
There's something holding us back in going for the jugular and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Probably the single worst performance of the Amorim reign honestly. Was right up there with any of the garbage Ten Hag served up. So fecking timid through the middle and in build up, with only Amad/Dorgu looking interested in actually getting us into the final third.

Also shocking on his part to invert both fullbacks while we also get embarassed in the middle of the park. My goodness that performance pissed me off so much. Only reason we won is because Leicester are terrible and got tired towards the end, and because of that we could finally get the ball into the final third enough to let Garnacho and Amad run at their fullbacks.

Garnacho was good, Zirkzee was good, Amad in the second half was good. Also shout out to young Lenny, thought he was dominant after the switch to LCB and far more aggressive pushing up. Great to see.

Issue with the first half was the super slow build up. Always passing backwards and waiting for opponents to get back into formation to defend. They seem to be afraid of making mistakes.

Need to move the ball forward faster. Don't wait until we are behind to start taking risks.

Turgid. I don’t know how we’ve come to playing a DM and 3 CBs at home to Leicester but that was one of the most lifeless performances I can remember.

Offside or not (ok, yeah he was by a mile), we owe Maguire a debt of gratitude for saving us from another 30 minutes of that.

How do we have an entire midfield who flatly refuse to move the ball forward?

Yikes, that was tough to watch. Of course still get excited for a Fergie time winner. Very happy we are alive in the Cup.

How many times did Mainoo and some others receive the ball and just pass it back with room to turn? Hate that. Need the olde Mainoo back somehow.

Forgot to mention thought Yoro played well. Seems to be gaining more confidence.

I don't know if we're still playing a high line or not -- because the team is really too boring to watch. But, perhaps the emphasis on players doing everything except score means this is what we see (if we bothered to watch!) -- slow, plodding, conservative, non-attacking soccer.

Or maybe it's that plus a lot of out of shape players....

That celebration by our players tells you all you need to know - It has been some time since we last won a game so it's something worth celebrating for.

I don't know about De Cordova Reid, I was beginning to think that the United players had been smoking de Córdoba weed last night...

Wish we had the ability to utilise Garna like this. He's a different player when coming off the bench. Mostly cuz of how tired the defenders are and how much fresher Garna is. Lively performance, still needs to improve decision making in the final 3rd.

On another note, he put in so many crosses in such a dangeroud area, wrong footing defenders but there was no one bursting into the box or being in that position from our team. We've conceded so many goals like this, even under ETH and today as well! We need to start scoring those ourselves too!

At half time it was "I didn't think things could get any worse, but that was absolutely awful. What is Amorim thinking!? I think this job is too much for him. He's not a Man Utd manager."

At full time it was "Thank goodness that didn't go to extra time. Thank goodness there's no VAR. The linesperson did us a huge favour. What is Amorim thinking!? I think this job is too much for him. He's not a Man Utd manager."

I hope that weird decision to play a bunch of players outside of their favoured positions in the first half was some kind of experiment because it wasn’t a league match and because it was a weak Leicester side.

He corrected it in the second half and made good subs after that.

Maybe he’s trying to see just how versatile that XI was and how good they could be if you turned it on its head from what you’re expecting to see lined up? I’m sure there’s some benefit if they could pull it off and you can tangle the opposing team up in confusion with their marking and unsettle their game plan if players keep moving positions and therefore it’s not predictable.

I think it is the players mentality. In the game against Crystal Palace, Maguire will pass to Bruno then Bruno will pass back to Maguire then Maguire will pass it back to Bruno. It is not once but several times, can anyone tell me what is the purpose? Players are playing scare. What we have are mentally weak players, I am not sure when we are able to compete, maybe forever.

The number of times a midfielder got the ball and first thought was to pass it backwards was incredible. The goal is the other fecking way!!!
Leicester had SO much time on the ball in the centre of midfield it beggared belief.
First half was as bad as it gets.
Someone will have to explain to me why you play your new left back at right back and keep Dalot on the left where he’s been genuinely awful for months. Makes zero sense and if it continues questions are going to have to be asked about Amorim. Football is often not that complicated, play a left footer on the left and vice versa, all this inverted winger stuff is bollocks.
We were bailed out by garnacho and the Lino.
Depressing…….

I think the most concerning thing about that first half was that Leicester were awful yet deservedly leading.

Garnacho coming on changed the game, fortunate winner but it did feel as though we'd probably nick it in extra-time if went that far.

The worst thing about last night was the lack of intuition - every player took 5 touches and looked all over to find a pass. Proper teams don't even have to look.

Maybe a week of training together will help, but I'm not holding my breath.

We do seem to be getting a nice bit of luck in the cup competitions which I think you need at some point.

I've been convinced for a while that we are going to continue to suffer and finish bottom half in the league but somehow win the FA Cup and Europa League.

I think that comes down to initiatives in front. If there aren't any, the safe pass back is the correct choice. No coincidence that this changed when Garnacho came on and gave us a second outlet (Amad always seems to be trying, at least). Then in turn that lets Bruno and the back 3 get more involved in the final third. Every time we have a spell of attacking pressure, that features. It's like a threshold we need to get over to be in a position to create anything. I don't think that happens simply through passers and carriers being more adventurous. But maybe it's part of it.

For sure, last thing we need is a team 2/3 divisions below us and coming to Old Trafford and out playing us.
Like everyone else.
Recently we just seem to have been better away from home. The home support seems so tense and is transmitting to the players while the away support just sing their support constantly throughout the game.

I think it's more that the team works better counter attacking than when it is at home and expected to break teams down.

If you play inverted wide players then their first touch is always going to go back on their stronger foot, and then they are facing the CBs so they pass to where they are facing as a low risk pass. It doesn't make any sense to play two inverted wide players on the same side.

Quite worrying how Mainoo can take a night off and still not get pulled until after 60 minutes following a rollocking from Bruno.

Garnacho helped, but things really started to move once Mainoo was subbed.
