FA W FA Cup 4th Round

Manchester United 2:1 Leicester City

Post-match discussion

Almost every time we won the ball we passed back to the CBs.

Winning is the ultimate goal but without quality play we will never progress forward.

When evaluating the game, keep in mind that Leicester are almost guaranteed to be relegated yet they played well against us.
They played shit, we played even worse most of the game, making them look half decent

The number of times a midfielder got the ball and first thought was to pass it backwards was incredible. The goal is the other fecking way!!!
Leicester had SO much time on the ball in the centre of midfield it beggared belief.
First half was as bad as it gets.
Someone will have to explain to me why you play your new left back at right back and keep Dalot on the left where he’s been genuinely awful for months. Makes zero sense and if it continues questions are going to have to be asked about Amorim. Football is often not that complicated, play a left footer on the left and vice versa, all this inverted winger stuff is bollocks.
We were bailed out by garnacho and the Lino.
Depressing…….
Every single word of this post is pure truth

I think it's more that the team works better counter attacking than when it is at home and expected to break teams down.
Probably, but I do think they support is more defiant and will support them right through the game. OT can go really quiet like any home ground if it isn't going the way they want it.

Thank God the linesman had enough of this shit football and decided to go home.

Just watched the full 90 mins this morning not knowing the result or how the performance was. My takeaways from that 90 mins:

1st half was absolutely abysmal. Didn't create anything and our general play even just the basic passing and moving was awful. Deservedly went a goal down and was fearing the worst

2nd half Garnacho's introduction made a big difference and the performance slightly improved. Got the equaliser through another of our subs in Zirkzee who made a good contribution off the bench. Then the winning goal in Fergie Time by Maguire despite him being offside, I couldn't care less just moreso happy we avoided extra time and potential penalties - thank feck for no VAR then.

Overally happy to be in the next round but another worrying performance in general.

We looked good when on the front foot and attacking relentlessly, that’s what led to the first goal. It was frustrating then after the goal to see Bruno doing the calm down gesture to all the other players rather than encouraging them to go again…calm down back to zombie football now please lads, don’t get too excited shizzle

Same thoughts I had at the time and for the few moaning about luck well things balanced themselves out when you take into account the Spurs winner in the League Cup tie v United would also be chalked off if VAR was in operation then.

I hope that weird decision to play a bunch of players outside of their favoured positions in the first half was some kind of experiment because it wasn’t a league match and because it was a weak Leicester side.

He corrected it in the second half and made good subs after that.

Maybe he’s trying to see just how versatile that XI was and how good they could be if you turned it on its head from what you’re expecting to see lined up? I’m sure there’s some benefit if they could pull it off and you can tangle the opposing team up in confusion with their marking and unsettle their game plan if players keep moving positions and therefore it’s not predictable.
Thinking a bit outside the box here, but at the end of the day, every single one of these guys has been a professional footballer for some years, and were at the top of their game in their respective youth programs. Amorim has to wonder how they can possibly be so mentally locked into a single position that they can barely function when moved to adjacent or mirrored positions. I know I do.

The worst thing about last night was the lack of intuition - every player took 5 touches and looked all over to find a pass. Proper teams don't even have to look.

Maybe a week of training together will help, but I'm not holding my breath.
Maybe playing players consistently in the same position would help as well

Not great, Ruben was even pee'd off going by the after match interview.

We were quite bad at home to a team that is in even worse form than we are which is really saying something.

It took an offside goal to beat that lot, don't know what the linesman was looking at, he was directly in line to see the offside but didn't put his flag up so thankfully we are in R5 due to no VAR.

I still say, and it might be still a small victory, but the way we played the last 30 minutes gives me some hope going forward. Only one team was going to win that game, even if it went to extra time, and it wasn't Leicester.

For years, right up until Ten Hag's sacking, the Bruno thread was dominated with posts about how he needs to rein in his tendency to play low-percentage passes as it's making us lose control of games. Now that we have a manager with a possession based philosophy, he his getting criticised for telling his teammates to calm down. I agree that the zombie football is a chore to watch, but Bruno is simply executing the manager's tactical instructions on the pitch, like a captain should do.
