PL D FA Premier League

Manchester United 1:1 Chelsea

Post-match discussion

Easy to see why we struggle to score.
The one that Bruno blasted into the heavens when he had a clear view on goal with the ball sitting up perfectly was pathetic for a guy with his technique.
Zirkzee must be the slowest striker in England!

Obviously not great but by comparison to ETH it was a leap forward

People need to remember how bad we were a few matches back, Ruud is not there to turn the team around, he is a sticking plaster for a few games, he cannot suddenly start implementing new things it would do more damage, we have tightened up at the back and in midfield, we are creating better chances, not that we deserved a win today but he had several gilt edged chances to score, different types of chances than we were creating previously.

Today we played well enough to get a draw, and could have easily snuck a win, a few weeks back I would have had us losing this game without any doubts, wins against Paok and Leicester and I do not think we could have asked or expected more of Ruud all things considered

I honestly hate our ex-players. They aren't useful in anyway. They attract so much pressure, yet take any opportunity to undermine the players, yet their always so unwilling to address managers.

He'll always be a legend.

It doesn't mean he's always right or the answer to our woes as some posters love to say. He would not do a good job as assistant or coach here due to that attitude.

And trapped into this "tough guy" persona. They thought that managing was easy, and they ultimately failed. Now they're just taking an easy job of judging others.

Also, knocking down on United just sell.

At least the ex-Liverpool pundits are loyal. I don't know what it is about our ex-players that makes them come after the team. Yet, the fans can be just as bad, they lap it up. The caf is full of manager lapdogs who shit on the players.

Casemiro seems a better finisher than Rashford, Garnacho, Hojlund, Zirkzee and Bruno and that is just ridiculous.
How can we have so many forwards who dont have the compsure to put the ball in the net.

It's a very boomer way of looking at football that a lot of caftards love. Whilst they try to look oh so progressive at the same time!

Felt we dealt with Palmer's and Jackson's threat very effectively

I always thought a change to a system with 3 central defenders would be difficult and strange for United, but after the last 1,5 years I’m now really looking forward to it and to a complete change in everything we do and have a well structured and coached team. Van Nistelrooij is really trying his best but I can’t wait for Amorim to start.

We absolute sh!t the bed in the final 3rd, Garnacho was very lucky it wasn’t him hooked for Amad as he was dire. Mazraoui by far the best player on the pitch

We had the better chances, but overall a fair result. Its going to take a while to get the muddled thinking out of these players and some confidence back I think.

Defence ok

Midfield hit and miss

Attack pretty woeful really.

1-1 probably a fair result. Garnacho had a very bad day, Hojlund spent to long fighting with the CB's forgot that he can play football aswell. Rashford was ok but looked pretty sulky and uninterested.

Zirkzee was laughably bad. Not convinced Ugarte is the required quality.

Maz had a good game looks a good signing.

Amorin has lots of work to do.

Is that correct?
Yes he’s poor at direct PL free kicks and needs Amorim to tell him Rashford is far better and should take all direct free kicks if he’s on the pitch.
This was the game that vindicated everyone that wanted ten Hag out. No doubt we'd have got "three niled" again if that joker was still here.
Totally agreed the Delusional one cost us at least 5 to 6 points this season by just the teams he selected and the in game substitutes that he made. Now we have to hope RVN wins his league game against Leicester, which is no guarantee they way our strikers are currently playing and then hope Amorim brings his over 70% win rate to the team, highly unlikely with this squad?

Were be lucky to improve from 30% to 45%?

Garnacho needs to play smarter. His shoot first mentality needs to be harnessed a bit. He is exciting and a threat but sometimes the pass is on and he forgoes it

The hopes I had about a new manager coming in were pretty much snuffed out after watching the snooze fest this afternoon.

We're light years away from competing at the top level.

We cannot keep playing with the same formation and hoping that "this" time we'll be able to squeeze a better performance from enough players to win the match.

4-2-3-1 is not working for us. We've tried it. We've tried to buy new players which fit the system-it still doesn't work.

My only hope is that Amorim makes those systemic changes in our formation and it works.

Soulful vibe in OT. Of course there are issues. Some players seem too wayward. Chelsea have the ball away a lot. Would have been nice to win. Glad we didn’t lose.

No, one in the Premier League, 3 for Utd in total and about 10 in his club career I think.

It's not great, but even the very best free kick takers in history (which includes the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Beckham) are getting around 60 goals from free kicks in their careers. So if we were to spread those numbers over the number of seasons they played, even the very best would make little difference to their teams overall goal tallies direct from free kicks....there are many things to complain about Bruno for, but not scoring free kicks would be one of the last for me, it's just not a steady enough source of goals for any team to be worth worrying about.

I know Ugarte is catching a bit of flak but his hassling and constant pressuring in the middle is key to us not being overrun like usual - he does a decent job and I’m certain he gets even better.

He isn’t a player who pings passes though or creates so people need to get rid of that thought.

I admittedly watched the game while talking to friends but the post match commentary seemed really negative whereas tbh I thought we did alright. Got stuck in, showed some grit and 1-1 against a very good Chelsea side isn’t a bad result.

Zirkzee needs skipping out asap.

I think this game was good in showing us our gaps and the things we have.
  • We have a good defence, but no left back
  • Casemiro is useful for games against smaller teams, but the gaps created due to difficulty covering gaps may require us to sign another midfielder (as a third option), and Casemiro come down to a 4th choice.
  • Mazraoui is a good player and has the type of technical ability we should be looking for
  • Our wingers are a problem. In big games and moments, we need players higher up the pitch with the dribbling/passing ability to take advantage of space. Neither Garnacho or Rashford do this well enough, and Amad still needs time.
  • Bruno's passing is a big asset for us, and he may benefit from being more of an attacker,
  • Hojlunds energy and holding up are good, he should get the season to see if he can work with Amorim to become a solid scorer, if not, he can be used as a back up.
  • Zirkzee has a lot to prove.

As a team, our attack is a bit of a problem. The players there either need to be developed or shipped out but at present, it isn't good enough
I agree with what you’ve said but how come Amad needs time but Garnacho just doesn’t do it well enough? Surely it should be flipped given that Amad is nearly 3 years old that Garnacho

Weird to read some of the positive takes in this match. I'd say almost all of our positive moments came from some moments of chaos. Credit to us to reacting to such situations fast but apart from that, I'd say that Chelsea was clearly the better team from two rather bad teams out there. We just don't play together as a team and I really really hope that Amorim finds something to get a tune out of these knuckleheads. Todays game made me rather skeptical to be honest. Again a few weird moments from key players, again mostly outfought by an opponent who made us look like the away team in our own stadium, again Bruno losing his head and focussing on complaining while the game was going, another weird moment by Martinez that could have had him sent off. And what was that substitution - subbing Ugarte while Casemiro is almost out of steam and then putting Lindelof into midfield? WTF?! I mean, he did suprisingly well but pretty sure we would have suffered from that change had there be more time on the clock. Can't help but thinking the club is cursed...

Meh I'll take it, expectations are way out of sync on here. Chelsea could have gone 3rd today (remind me where we were). Sky piling on the doom trying to drive the narrative.... Wonder if Chelsea get any criticism? They were the favourite after all
Good post. Delighted to see Bruno score. Decent interview post match by the captain too. Posts in here are 80% entitled horseshit. Please feck off to City, most of you.

Thankfully we might have a manager that will not put up with these nonsense performances.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why we play so bad as a unit, there is just zero structure to our game and the players are either not that good or completely lost in what to do out there.

For all of Chelsea's "dismantling" of United (Red Nev's word), they only really threatened from two set pieces. De Ligt got a few good blocks in.

We constantly look one or two passes away from brilliant chances. That Garnacho one at the end, slide in Amad and he's got an easy square pass for Zirkzee to mess up.

I'm taking encouragement from today.
Same. Good to hear positivity in the Caf. That’s what, as we speak, Ruuud - and soon Amorim - will be trying to spread among the team too. Love thd vibe between RVN and the OT crowd.

Its the best we could do without any decent attacking players. This is what Ruud meant when asked if we had a good squad and he said we have to get the best out of the players we have or something along those lines. You cant win sht without some star attackers. I think they tried though. Even Rashford tried but they are just miles off.
Sublimely brilliant post - except that is not what Ruud said. At all.

Let me preface this by saying I think we made the right choice selling him…but my god how much different would this team be with Mason Greenwood. We are just so devoid of finishers. He could be a Palmer like figure that carries this offense. Instead we have to watch Garnacho put his head down and take 14 shots a game without looking like he’ll ever score.

Top of the table Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1 recently in Anfield.

Liverpool in that match had 9 shots on goal, 5 on target and 42% possession.

Feels a bit harsh to me that, I thought Ugarte had a decent game, we looked off it first 20 when they looked stronger in CM but other than that thought we looked ok.

He had an okay match. We need outstanding midfielders though. We'll never get out of this rut until we have midfielders like Keane, Scholes and Carrick. I just don't see a great first touch and quick enough play from him. It worries me that we just have a pretty good midfielder in him.

Even free kick taker. Bruno has scored 1 free kick at Utd!!!! One!!!! And he stands at the front of the queue every time. Some one should be having a word
Think CR7 was mocked exactly for this. He had scored some brilliant kicks taken in PL before 2008 and just remained the first in line for FK at Real till 2018. At one point, he had no FK goal in some 100-150 attempts. Nobody ever asked him to give it to someone else.
