FA D FA Cup 4th Round

Cambridge United 0:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Fri, 23 January 2015

Exeter were non-league and did it at Old Trafford.

This is the lineup United played that day. Howard, Phil Neville, Brown, Pique, Spector,Eagles (Ronaldo 63), Djemba-Djemba, Jones, Miller (Scholes 63),Bellion (Smith 76), Richardson

We could have Van Basten or Ronaldo in our line up and not score.

We are that devoid of creativity.
They would probably be instructed to make at-least a hundred passes for game. As risk-free as possible.

Not a bad result,we are still in the cup and this is the FA Cup so bring on the replay,we've lost to worst clubs in the Fa cup in the past.I actually enjoyed it(proper cup game)

To which worse clubs have we lost? I can't really remember.

Phil Jones set piece specialist... I really feel like I've seen it all now. When he took that free kick di Maria was standing over I felt like crying

Having a team that totals under £1million or plays in a lower league is not a sign that they will automatically be shit. Look at Southampton for god-sake, a well-drilled and hard-working team who currently sit higher than super Man-United who should win every game because they're called Manchester United.

Is that Van Gaal's fault or the players that take their foot off the throttle? I'd very much say the latter, because players where making mistakes today that they really fecking shouldn't be. That is not LVG's fault!
Van Gaal. I back him fully but it's very much in line with every single game we've seen the last few months. He doesn't like his teams to take risks with anything, so it doesn't matter who we play against, it'll be the same boring stuff. You can't play football without taking risks and this is almost the complete opposite to how Fergie always wanted us to play or what he told his players.
You always hear the likes of Rio, Keano, Neville, and others talk about how when playing for Manchester United, you have to take risks and make things happen. Playing it safe doesn't cut it. Herrera and Di Maria are the only two who do it but get criticized when they lose it. Of the current crop, they're the 2 after De Gea who would be automatic starters under Fergie.

LVG is a clueless prick who has no idea how to cope with the aggressive, physical, fast pace of English football. Tactics all wrong, performance dire, typical, and predictable.

We're going nowhere under him.

Chris Foy had an absolute nightmare game. He kept on doing his best 'let the underdog get away with everything' impression, while blowing the whistle for the tiniest 'fouls' we apparently did. Disgraceful.

Oh, and yeah, we were utterly wank, but it's getting a bit tiresome writing the same after every game.

No so disappointed with this draw. We get another game. When is teh replay?

Yeah, they spent a fair bit of money in the summer you know.

Can't fault LVG's tactics tonight.

If you look into it, DDG had nothing to do and their only chances were from set pieces. Hit and hope one of their goliaths gets their head to a ball.

What I can say is that we have a few very cowardly players that are afraid of committing or fighting for the ball. Di Maria, Valencia, Januzaj all culpable, and they should all take a long hard look at themselves about what it means to play for Manchester United.

Their pitch was like a fecking bombsite and the conditions were dreadful, and on a pitch where every Cambridge player was throwing their body in the way things will always be difficult, no matter who the opposition is.

Second half we did better and retained the ball well, it was just the final touch that was missing. It's not all doom and gloom, Rojo was really good and Herrera did very well when he came on.

I'm not worried, these things happen. At least we're still in the competition. It is the FA Cup after all.

The only excuse that can been justified is the one that states United were yet again shite. Not how well Cambridge played, not the referee, not the conditions. The players and the manager must shoulder the blame 100%, it is not good enough and shouldn't be accepted as anything other.

Credit to Cambridge, they were really well organised, defended well and generally wanted to fight more.

That said why the feck are we so reluctant to play the ball forward or a through ball? The one time we do in the whole match Falcao almost scores! The there is Phil Jones, good tackler, good at blocks, decent at heading and that's were it stops. He can't pass, even 6 yard balls he gives to the opposition, definately can't cross so why is he taking corners?

Wilson overall is simply not ready yet to be starting, he offers nothing during the build up phases.

There are thankfully some positives from the game. This is the first time this season where I think Januzai should now be getting a chance to start next game, before he has been poor. Rojo plays like a fighter and a solid defender and we need that in the team and finally Di Maria did decent I think, got himself more involved than previous games.

Overall I am starting to get the feeling that Van Gaal doesn't understand the United way, yes he's all about results (and thats a good thing for sure) but he needs to realise that is is not just about the result but more the manner of the result. As in how we play to win.

Possession with we are decent, maybe more so than previous teams, but possession means nothing without penetration and thus chances.

At least we'll still sell more shirts than them in their local Sports Direct.

di maria is going to have to pull his finger out over the next few months. body language is interesting

You are not helping your point with the Southampton example. Pretty much everyone here agrees we should be playing a heck of a lot better and be above the loles of Southampton if we have hopes to fight for the title soon.

So disappointed and not just because of this game. I'm a LVG-fan, but he just has to get this team playing some good football again. And soon!

They had 11 men behind the ball every time we attacked. The pitch was horrendous, the weather appalling and it was a typical FA Cup match where they throw everything they have into every challenge to make it as difficult as possible to play. We weren't good but it's really not that big a shock.

We'll beat them 6-0 at Old Trafford with the extra space, there's no way they will be able to be as compact or cover as much ground as they did today on their matchbox pitch.

Pleased to get the replay in the end, midfielders and strikers just weren't good enough and although it's great having so much possession it's pointless when you can't actually do anything with. There is just no tempo to our play, no balance, no pace and too many platters who just aren't very good.

The excuses are on another level. Keep deluding yourself though.

HA. Yeah! I mean, what has Van Gaal ever done in football?

We desperately need a centre half who is comfortable with the ball at his feet. Once again today moaning about our build up play, it's too slow, it's all well good dominating possession but stats like those don't win you matches.

I'm just trying to show that having big name players doesn't mean one team should instantly be able to beat another team. Southampton are above us not because they have £250M worth of players, but because they know what they're doing, like Cambridge did today.

We've seen this type of performance from United before. It is troubling this time because the torrid play we saw today has been present in many games this season.

Not panicking at all, but LVG needs to pull his head out his ass and utilize his personnel correctly

When a team has everybody parked with their seat belts on, the last thing you need, as the attacking team is two strikers. You need creators, wingers, overlapping fullbacks, intelligent players. Fellaini and Wilson were absolutely anonymous - they're just not suited to the type of game we saw tonight. They're best when the game is open.
