Gaming Pokémon Strumfest

Always wondered if the cards from my youth are actually worth anything, was on the brink of giving them to my youngest cousin as a gift. Given the fact that I was quite into this stuff, never played it and only collected cards I should probably give them a proper look after reading through this thread.:wenger:

That's a good way to look at it, you better go and buy some more :D

I don't need encouraging. Proper fcuked myself though as I'm working nights this week, will be getting woken up by the postman almost every day after a couple hours sleep.

Ah, that will be a bit annoying. Stick some earplugs in and the postie will leave a card for you to go and pick them up. That's what I do with 99% of stuff that I get.

I used to buy and sell Pokemon cards full time. Had and bay shop for 18 months.

Best card I ever had was a Japanese Pokemon Players Club Flareon. Had the Vaporeon too. Flareon selling anywhere between $450-$600 online now.

Had to register as a business and all kinds! Got a message off a mate the other day to say his brother has replicated my set up and is doing brilliantly. Got a picture of about 25 unopened booster pack boxes from all different generations. I want to sit and open the lot!

He invested in some very sensitive scales and can work out which packs the holographic cards are in, apparently working out quite well for him.

Here is a video I put on youtube.

It's 6 years old and the quality is from a camera phone at the time. Apologies. It's had 42k views which surprised me a bit.

The Vaporeon is the first card I show then you can see page upon page of so,e nice cards!

Did you sell the Vaporeon for that much ($450-$600), or is it after you had it that the value went up that much?

I picked it up for about £120 and managed to shift it for about £250 6 years ago.

For those that don't know, you would report in to the Japanese Players club as often as you could and play other kids to get points. There were rewards for reaching certain tiers in the form of cards. I think at the time I had these cards only 20 or so people had achieved the Vaporeon level and even fewer got to the 3rd highest which was Flareon. Can't remember what was 1st and 2nd at the time. Umbreon I think was one and god knows about the other, you may see a Unicorn before you see that card!

By the way, I stopped because ebay were really slashing my margins on the stuff I sold loads of and I got offered a good career opportunity. Selling restrictions and mandatory changes to my operation caused by ebay was a bummer though. I was making about £1100 profit a month sat at home at one point. Try explaining that on a CV though!

Damn, nice stuff.

What was the most valuable card you got from a booster pack? Of was most of your business buying and reselling single cards?

I think from the EX Holon Phantoms and EX Crystal Guardians packs in 2006 there were 3 'Gold Satar' cards in a full set. I think the likelyhood of getting one was about 1 in 80 packs or possibly greater than that. I managed to get 2 in one booster box and they sold for about £45 a pop.

Brilliant, he's a scam artist!

He is exploiting a flaw in the design and going to great lengths to establish which are the valuable packs but I'm sure many would see him as a scam artist. He takes the Holo's, sends them to get graded and put in a sealed plastic pack with the rating on it then puts them for sale.

Nerds. You should all play a proper card game like Magic: the Gathering like us cool kids.

Even when i was like 11/12 when the cards first came out I never got round to playing them. I think I got some free CD-ROM from Woolworths with the card game on which was a laugh.

I remember a shop opened near our school called Yankee Trader and the guy sold all kinds of stuff in there from the US and loads of pokemon cards. One of my mates landed a job in there working 3:30pm-6pm when we were 14, dealing with the huge queues of people wanting cards and got paid 2 Booster Packs an hour the jammy feck!

I assume he's selling the packs without holo's to chumps on ebay, unlucky for them. The more I'm buying and getting into it the more I'm thinking about getting into the grading and selling game. Looks like there's money to be made and a good way to fund a collection too.

Ah, now I see where you are coming from. He sells a lot of complete sets and he opens the packs himself but I assume he is selling some. That's actually pretty harsh, if it was my mate and not his brother I would have a word.

I didn't really realise how expensive the cards could get. My son has a holo Blastoise that looks like this

and it seems its going for near £20! I'm locking them away from him... its too rare for him to play with!

My encore for Pokemon cards seems to be over (for now) (yeah right) but these are some of my favourite cards I've got right now in terms of artwork after a recent spate of sadness:

Obviously still going to buy loads more....

Gotta up your storage game man! I had bought a couple of A4 folders to store them in, with the cards being in individual sleeves too, but they sent me the wrong one and after seeing a video on Youtube I decided I was going to store the holo's in Toploaders instead. I can't explain it but I really like being able to hold them all in a bunch in my hand (again, this sounds so sad) and flick through them rather than them all being in pages of a folder. The packaging that the Toploaders come in is great for keeping them in afterwards too.

Each card goes into one of these, and that goes into a Toploader (you can see the packaging that's useful for storage). Having bought a few variations of the sleeves and having folders etc, this is my storage of choice. It's really clear and also rigid for perfect protection. I'll put all non-holo's into sleeves and folders by set I think and keep the holo's separate.

It would be cool to have them in those toploader things. The only thing though is it would be a bit tricky to find somewhere for me to keep them, by keeping them in the packs I can just store them all in one box.

Would probably use them though if I was more dedicated rather than just buying them for the excitement of opening the packs

For comparison, rough prices for Pokemon booster boxes (36 packs):

- Base set = £400-£600
- Base set 1st Edition = £3000-£5000 (not seen one sell though)
- Fossil = £200
- Fossil 1st Edition = £250
- Jungle = £200
- Jungle 1st Edition = £250

Neo are so rare I haven't been able to see a true price yet, and I saw a Base set 1st Edition single booster pack sell for £180.
