You can get one right after delivering the SecretPotion to Jasmine. There is a Safari Zone you can then access from Cianwood, they're commonish in the right section of the Safari.
Is it true you can knockabout with your Pokemon outside of their ball in this?

Can I get a Squirtle at some point as well? This is a tough choice now I have Torchic. Is Cyndaquil in this game?
You get a choice of Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle at one point in the game. You can get the rest by asking the kind folks on here if they've got a spare if you really want them. Cyndaquil is not in the game unfortunately 
Won't be long before Cyndaquil and Totodile are available.
When I got Gold I traded all my starter Pokemon to my brother's Silver and then back to me so I had all three.
I've done that a few times, tbh, Gen One was the only one where all three starters were bloody awesome, the rest I was happy with one, perhaps training a second later, or using it on a separate run through.
This Tierno guy just needs to get out of my life completely. I mean who does he think he is trying to give me a nickname without even knowing me? And now he's trying to battle me with a fecking crayfish pokemon thing.
I've been quite pleased with a few. Only gens that I've not liked all three have been 2 and 4.
Listed in order for each gen:
Gen 1 - Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur
Gen 2 - Cyndaquil, Totodile
Gen 3 - Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip
Gen 4 - Piplup, Turtwig
Gen 5 - Oshawott, Tepig, Snivy
Not played 6 but from what I've seen I think it'd be Chespin and Froakie. Don't like the look of Fennekin and its evos at all.
You're not too far off my faves there, I didn't much like Treecko(well, Sceptile), kinda mixed on Snivy and Tepig. Well Gen 5 was weak for starters IMO, Oshawott was my fave, but it's third evo was ridiculous. It just didn't fit with the earlier forms.

I wasn't a massive fan of the Gen 5 ones but I found them all sort of acceptable. Can't be doing with Chikorita or Chimchar though.
