Gaming Pokémon Strumfest

Right nerds, I’m playing Ultra Sun which is my first game since Gold, way way back.

A couple of things... I discovered Wobder Trade which is the most thing ever, but I have gotten a couple of rare Pokemon through which are apparently hacked.

The most notable are a guy called Marshadow which looks cool as feck, and a shiny Mew. What do I do with these? Do I keep them anyway? I feel like I’ve cheated even though I’ve done nothing outside of the fans mechanics.

Secondly, how the feck do I cope with this overwhelming amount of new Pokemon? I don’t even recognise the Gold ones that well.

Aside from a Pokemon called Hawlucha which is the coolest I’ve seen so far, my party is pretty much some of the cooler ones from Red.

Final question, without spoilers, how do I go about making sure I don’t miss any of the rarer Pokemon?

I went on an Ebay spree and have on of every generation since Gold (including Heart Gold which is annoyingly expensive) so I’ve got a lot of Pokemon to play until the Switch one.

Play lots of gen 7 random battles on pokemonshowdown. You'll get roasted at first but after a while you'll start to cope with most of the pokemon, abilities, items etc.

I passed on Ultra Sun. Played Sun and hated it tbh. The amount of cutscenes every few steps and hand holding was way too much for me. No Pokemon game previously had that problem to that extent. Felt like they were proud of the 3d models of characters and trying to push the player to like them. Funny enough started enjoying it in the post game content when I finally can roam the extra routes and battle without hand holding.

Gen 7 is the least favourite for me.

I'm enjoying it to an extent but I don't really like the 3D as much as the 2D, and I do miss the format from Red/Gold (and I presume the games inbetween?). I guess that is easier for me to say since i've missed out on about 5 games.

I have Platinum, Omega Ruby, Black, Black 2, X and then Heart Gold arriving so I have a lot to catch up on. I guess if I had played these first I would have been border of the original format.

One thing I wish they did was limit it to newer Pokemon only until end game at least as I just can't take all this shit in.

Also, I wish I hadn't spent so much time Wonder Trading as I feel like i've gotten Pokemon that would have been much more enjoyable to get out 'in the field', especially with the amount of games I have to play.

Up to you what you do. If you feel that strongly then either release them or put them back on WonderTrade for someone else to enjoy.

This month you can get Latias (Ultra Sun) or Latios (Ultra Moon) on Mystery Gift by the way. As for not missing out on any of the rarer Pokemon it is tough to say without spoilers but I don't think you have anything to worry about until towards the end of the game and by then you'll have an idea of how to get them.

HG/SS is the best in the series for me. It took everything great from Gold/Silver and added more new contents on it. It felt like it will never end.

Honestly I think Gen IV gets too much undeserved stick imo. Platinum and HG/SS were great. Didn't like Gen VI much except the mega evolution. Omega Ruby was decent though.

GenV has the best story in the series and the sequel attempt was pretty good.

Playing Pokémon Fire Ash at the moment.

Basically, you're Ash, and it follows the timeline of the Anime. In it, you go from Kanto to Johto, etc, to I think wherever it's up to now. I don't watch the current anime or play the current gens so I dunno. You can use Ash's team, which I am, or your own I believe.

As a fan of the earlier seasons of the anime I am really enjoying this. I still want a version of this that plays like Pokémon Generations/MMO 3D, though.

@Woodzy I felt the sun/moon games to be the worst of the 3d ones, like you say overloaded with cut scenes abd there are a lot of Pokemon dropped on you. I find X/Y and AS/OR much better games, and now I struggle with the 2d games as the quality of life in the newer ones is much better.

Although heart gold and the black/white games are great too.

What is this thread about? I've been playing ROM hacks on my phone recently. Is that what you're all on about with Fire Ash and stuff?

Pearl and Heart Gold are definitely my favourites of the non-retro ones. I didn't really get on with the 3D in Black/White and I haven't played any since. Looking forward to Let's Go though!

New Mythical Pokemon Zeraora available via a download code from GAME from now to 15th November in the UK:

And in the US at GameStop from 19th October to 9th November.

I'm not able to get to a GAME store to get him but for anyone interested there's the info.

The Pokémon Company says that the big cat-like dude will arrive at level 50, and it will carry the special Air Balloon item with it. The Air Balloon nullifies all ground-type damage; that’s a big deal for competitive players who would otherwise never pit an electric type against a ground type.

Woke up early before work so snuck in a couple hours of Let’s Go.

Honestly removing random encounters is my favourite change they’ve made in a long time, it’s just so much more enjoyable to play. I’d be more than happy for that part to stay for the game next year.

Nice, still awaiting on mine. Bloody Royal Mail.

Fine. I'll buy let's go eevie.
One question though, can I level myself to overpowered proportions? That's all I really do in these games.

That said, you should look up crystal clear. It's absolutely brilliant.

Must be the biggest graphical update since Crystal to Ruby/Sapphire, the game looks stunning. Won't be able to play until after Christmas but it looks really good, being able to see wild Pokemon outside of the long grass is such a cool feature.

The pokeMon you start with is definitely OP it feels like already, from reviews I’ve read you can definitely make your team pretty much invincible. It’s much less grindy as you get lots of XP from catching Pokémon. It’s for sure not a hardcore RPG but feels some good nostalgic fun. Will definitely check out Crystal Clear.

It does look great, the world feels much more alive and it’s really nice to see the locations I remember from being a kid updated like they are.

Yeah the review I read said it was probably a little bit too easy.

EDIT: Which I guess makes sense if their idea was to get hold of a lot of Pokémon Go players who haven't played the core games previously.
I think I'll hold out for the game next year(?).

Yeah for sure if you go into it expecting a challenge you’ll definitely be disappointed, a “proper” Pokémon game it definitely isn’t. I’m really looking forward to what they do with next years proper game now.

Saw you playing it at 7am this morning when I had a quick go on Axiom Verge.

Cool to hear you like the random encounters being removed, that's one bit I'm looking forward to most. I mustn't put off getting it too long.

For me, the lack of random encounters was a big negative. But hearing people are happy about them makes it okay for me to check out.
I do look forward to starting my adventure with Mew as a starter.

It's just that with me not being a huge RPG person (especially turn based ones) it's not something I ever enjoyed that much, and always felt like something I put up with in order to enjoy the rest of the game. It's alright in small doses, but when it gets too frequent I get annoyed by it. It's good to have the option between this and the "proper" one coming later on! :)

I've no idea about starters or anything, I've just seen a couple of trailers and that's it, I'm going to go in knowing hardly anything about it

I'll just put it out there just in case: Never play the original Final Fantasy 1 & 2. Insane encounter-rates from what I remember.
I've also heard tons of people struggle with the encounter-rate in Lucifer's Call, even if it's hailed as one of the best rpgs of all time.

My personal breaking point was (if i remember correctly) on the PS2 game Magna Carta.

 Thanks for the tip!

I've got Final Fantasy III on the SNES waiting to be played, I thought I should give it a proper go some time. I played it once and died after about half an hour and had to start at the beginning again  That was a pain. I'll give it another go one day though.

I reckon I'll just stick to action-RPGs for the most part though, stuff like Secret of Mana/Evermore and Illusion of Gaia I can get on ok with.

Is it FF3 or is it FF6? FF6 was called FF3 in the US.
Either way FF6 is the one I think most fans of the series see as the best Final Fantasy game. It certainly is in the top 3 for me, below my favorite 8 and another nostalgic favorite in 9.

I tried a game that was named Koudelka, which was a precursor to the Shadow Hearts series. Died on my 2nd encounter and thought to myself: What the hell is this, I could play rpg games for a living, what did I miss?!

... I'll have to try it one more time soon. I was so stumped on it happening that I had to change game and forgot about it until now. :p

Action RPG's. I've said it many times but I'll keep repeating myself. YS 8 is as good as it gets on the switch in my opinion. Absolutely fantastic game.

It's the US 3, so 6.

Yeah it's because of the reputation I got it and have to give it a proper shot. Maybe it'll all click with me and I'll end up bloody loving it.

I reckon I'll have to stay well clear of any RPGs giving you trouble

I'll have to have a look at Ys sometime.

Let me know if you need help with 6. I'll happily be your "over the shoulder player 2" just to experience someone play it for the first time again.
I'm not sure if Koudelka was hard or if it was just me being drugged when I tried it. Been too long for me to remember which it was. I remember the feeling of being shocked at actually dying. :nervous:

Thanks I'll give you a shout if I need some guidance!

You have the perfect excuse to give that game another go now :D
