Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

It's here, the week is here!

Here's what I don't get. For a digital download there shouldn't be much disparity across regions, should there? Games here in Canada or the states are $59.99,yet you guys pay 62 and your pound is worth 1.7 CND.

You really wouldn't think so, because it's a bit ridiculous how much more they pay. I think Australians have it the worst too. I think the PS4 costs something like 100 or 150$ more in europe then in canada and the states

I can honestly say if the ps3 was going to cost me that much more I wouldn't have bought at launch.

The ps4 US process don't include tax whereas the European prices do. Or something.

I don't know why sony make us pay more though. I guess translating to British English is expensive

Ghosts and PS+ secured for £55. The beauty of Amazon gift cards worth £10 costing £5 and knowing enough nice people who bought them on my behalf.

Good to read some info on this, cheers. So that 62.99/game is the final price you folks actually pay? Though 20%...that's intense. After tax, a $59.99 game here goes to $65.99 (10%).

One thing I remember from this summer is that when people posted in the Steam Summer Sale thread the prices in pounds were usually significantly less than in dollars. Ie a $2.49 game for me was being posted at 1.29 or 1.49 in pounds. So clearly in some cases North America and England are paying similar prices, but in other cases the UK appears to be getting ripped off.

Still no thoughts on the new consoles huh?

My Ps4 impressions thus far:

Controller - Fantastic, apart from the rather short battery life. Sony finally realized that triggers are important, it feels more solid than the ps3 version and the thumbsticks being concave is much better.

Physical Device - Absurdly small. It almost looks weird on the shelf where my ps3 used to sit, because the space is so hilariously excessive. Probably not a bad thing for ventilation though. USB ports at the back are a bit hard to get to because of the way the console slants. Very quiet.

UI - It's still blowing my mind that I can simply pause whatever game and go immediately to the home screen. Long overdue when you consider multi-tasking functionality on other devices, but still very handy. The twitch stream stuff is cool, I've actually found myself watching for a few minutes before going to sleep once or twice. Not something I'm really into but it works very well. Playstation Store is much faster, updates aren't the annoyance they were on the ps3. Current lack of a Youtube app and media playback via external usb is annoying, hopefully the update for those won't be too long. Web browser is better, but I'd still rather just pick up my phone/tablet instead.

Games - I've got and have played Battlefield 4, Fifa 14 and Killzone Shadowfall. 64 player Conquest mode on Battlefield is unlike anything I've seen on a console before. Only thing that feels decidedly "next gen" imo. Killzone looks fantastic but I haven't played enough to say more than that. Fifa is Fifa, just slightly better looking and with more animations.

Not sure if that's what you're looking for, feel free to ask for any other details if you want.

 Sounds good, how good do the games look/play compared to high end PC or PS3?

Assuming you're talking to me and not Dan about Angry Birds...

I have a..maybe medium to high end PC? It can play the newest games like Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite at almost Ultra settings. I usually bump a couple things down to keep the framerate at 60.

My PC Specs in the spoiler
i5 3570k quad core cpu at 3.2 ghz
8 gb RAM
Nvidia GTX 660 2GB gpu
SSD/HDD storage
Windows 7 64 bit

Killzone I'd say looks as good as anything I've played on my PC, and it definitely outstrips the best looking PS3 games. I've played Fifa 14 on PS3, the differences between the it and the PS4 version are negligible. Gameplay wise though, I find Fifa plays better. Haven't played previous Battlefields on consoles, I did play a bit of Battlefield 3 on PC. The PS4 version looks better than that did imo, but it's hard to tell much of a difference.

Would you go out on a limb and say that the first party games look on par with high end PC graphics and third party on par with midrange PC graphics (on average/so far)? Not trying to put words in your mouth, just trying to get a tangible idea until I get my hands on one...

Yes to the first part, not really sure for the second. The only first party AAA game so far is Killzone (haven't tried Knack, not too interested), which yes to my eyes looks as good as high end PC graphics, assuming you consider my PC high end. But Battlefield 4 falls in the same category really. I'm trying to decide which of Killzone or Battlefield looks better, and I'm not really coming up with a definitive answer which should tell you how close they are. I think I just like Killzone's aesthetic better.

Fifa yeah looks markedly below high end PC games, but I can't imagine EA put a whole lot into the first iteration of FIFA on the next gen. I would assume something like Need for Speed Rivals or Assassins Creed 4 looks much better, if we're talking 3rd parties.

My first impression of the ps4 graphics as a whole was "This looks like a high end PC game". I should note that Resogun, which is free for PS+ members, in its own way looks incredible (and tremendous fun as well). Little particles flying everywhere, very cool stuff.

Had no interest in next-gen but am getting tempted to invest. Going to see if there's any about on Friday, so probably no chance but we shall see.

Sounds good, graphics from 1st and 3rd party will get better no doubt, not sure by how much, but from what you are saying it seems like a decent start (ignoring ea being lazy shits).

It's £35 on xbox one

It's strange, just can't imagine who would buy it at that price. I'm all for digital distribution but not at the prices i've seen today, I can't understand why the same game is more expensive on one console than the other.

4 days. I think I'm going to camp myself in front of the store around 1.5 hours before opening so I can get my hands on a bundle with Assassins Creed and Killzone for €470. I have FIFA14 already and will upgrade Battlefield 4 for €10, I will pick up NFS Rivals and possibly NBA at launch too and will have Contrast and Resogun from PS Plus. Games overload!

Some games on the Xbox One are £45 btw, and the exclusives count as 'Day One' editions for the next 2 weeks with added content.

Not great pricing, but cheaper than retail for launch. However, as they get cheaper at retail they'll probably stay at £45. It's ludicrous.

Yeesh they're all over the place aren't they? I had no idea European game prices were so different. I guess that's a pretty good price for Forza, seeing as it's probably one of if not the best game on that list.

Digital pricing has always been a con in the UK, I think I only brought 2 games digital last gen and one of those was only because it wasn't getting a full European release.

I'm only getting digital games through special offers or PS Plus, there's no point otherwise. I did get Killzone and Tearaway digital for Vita but they were much cheaper than retail copies and far more convenient just stuck there on the card without the need to carry a cartridge around.

I would go digital on most games but I can only download 7gb a day before it slows my net speed down for hours and hours

I'd like them to release discs with the digital copy on with a code, will never happen though

I'll probably download to a USB stick as a back up plan but I'm gonna attempt to download using the system

At least you guys get the fecking macine this week.. Sony moved Iceland from Europe closer to Japan, we wont get the machine until January... Last time I checked we were in Europe! Sometimes it sucks bigtime to have the total population of Coventry!

Import one, it'll work fine and won't cost a bomb.

I'm going to spend the next few months trying to resist buying a PS4 until I inevitably buckle and get one. I can't wait to pair it with my Vita and PS+

I was going to resist for a while but there's no point. I am going to get it within the next 6 months anyway and the price won't drop, actually the bundles that are being offered at launch are great value here. If I can manage to get my hands on the one that includes both Assassins Creed IV and Killzone I'll probably pay less than I'd in 2-3 months (less than €480).

The fact that I just got a job today which has more than doubled my salary obviously helps making such decisions too.

I agree with your logic but more time waiting simply means more time to save some money for the console and less guilt about buying one.

Congrats on the new job, I'm hoping for one myself in the coming months and that will also play a big part in my purchasing habits!

So you got the job? Nice
Yeah, not the one I was after September-October as they changed the position on offer for something much lower but I applied at a few other companies and I just came to agreement with one of them today. Starting mid-December, plenty of time to make use of my PS4 by then. It's not going to be easy after New Year as I'll have to put plenty of hours and learn a lot of different things but it's a great challenge.

Good luck, patience is key as I have learned. The fastest recruitment process concluded with the best offer after all the dross I had to go through before though, took 3 days before first interview and final decision on their part.
