Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

I think a lot of people going to hold back from buying a PS4 until this seemingly high failure rate settles down. Maybe the next batch of PS4's will be better.

I don't know what the rate of failure currently is but even IGN and another gaming site (forget the name) reported broken machines. I was watching Towelliee's stream last night on Twitch and his PS4 was 'fecking crazy hot' as he put it.
I still wish id pre ordered though obviously when so many machines get sent out there's going to be a few failures. As soon as they come back in stock i'll be buying one.

If it's around 5 to 8% failure rate, then no, the next batch will not be better, it's normal. If they have shipped 1.5 million, then you could see 75000 units that are dead or will die. The "reports" of failures also say that they are breaking for different reasons, not the same reason. Faults can occur in procured components, assembly, shipping, storage conditions, etc. 5% is quite normal, a console has never shipped before with the Internet that we have today, thus why certain people think that this is abnormal: it's not, and the same will happen to the XBone next week.

On report I've seen regarding overheating was due to the fan not spinning up.

Again, the engadget review claimed that it ran really cool even after a days worth of gaming... I suspect that those units were faulty.

Yeah exactly, I agree, it's certainly a worry.

8% is huge I would have thought.

Surely a new release of any new electronic item should be no higher than 1-2%

What is iPhone and iPad fail rate?

DOA isn't even a major issue (if it isn't abnormally high), as far as I'm concerned, it's those units that fail just after your warranty has run out. I'm looking at you XBox 360/HP Laptop

My girlfriend bought a Galaxy Tab a few weeks back. Turned up and the wireless didn't work, had to send it back. The replacement was absolutely fine.

It happens. Even good companies with a good reputation have failures in their products.

Well aware it happens. I work for an IT supplier. Less than 1% of what we sell is DOA.

8% would be a total disaster IMO

Mountain out of a molehill time again I see. Worst thing about it, have to do it all again next week with the Xbox One.

It doesn't matter about the 360 launch. This is now, if there is a major issue with the consoles Sony have fecked up badly.

I think it's worth remembering that people who have perfectly working consoles will not be sitting on Amazon writing a review. I don't know how many Amazon have sold but I'd imagine it is hundreds of thousands. 200 odd bad reviews isn't a big deal.

Yeah, it was like when I ordered my galaxy note 3 from a random website. Had untold amount of negative reviews and nowhere near as many positive. I went and took a look at carphone warehouse reviews and they were even worse

The fact is, people will more likely write a bad review than a good one.

I'm saying there are teething problems with virtually any new products of this kind on the market these days. It isn't a big deal, just take your machine to your retailer and exchange it for another one. As you would do for anything else.

From what I've gathered, a large amount of the issues seem to have been caused by the 1.5 firmware update rather than the hardware itself. Failures, crashes, bricks etc are inevitable on a console launch, obviously those who were desperate enough to get a PS4 to get it on release day will (understandably) go apeshit when it doesn't work properly out of the box. They'll all be replaced so in the long run it shouldn't be too much of an issue, the Xbox launch will have similar trends I'm sure.

On the flip side, however, I was watching a lot of the Giant Bomb PS4 stream yesterday and it certainly wasn't easy going in terms of functionality and being able to access certain features. A large part of this was undoubtedly caused by the issues with PSN (predictable yet frustrating) but it will all be ironed out within a few weeks.

Is there one out that shows the power of the ps4? The new Killzone perhaps?

The new Killzone couldn't be on PS3/360, but it definitely doesn't close to reach the potential of the PS4.

Annoyingly, both of these consoles do feel somewhat rushed. Both feel like they could have benefited from a few more months and a Spring launch - I guess they wanted a piece of that holiday action.

The Wii U would have benefited from it aswel.

I feel the same. It seems like only yesterday that the PS3 came out, and from what I've seen online there's nothing that blew me away yet either, at least nothing a pc couldn't handle with ease.

It's seven years since the PS3 came out, eight since the 360. By all accounts that's a pretty damn big gap in generations (six between PS1 and PS2, and PS2 and PS3) so in theory there should be a big difference, it's just that ... games are sort of peaking now, how much further can you take them without reinventing the wheel?

Games are not peaking, I don't know why I keep hearing this...

Also, to those worried about the apparent poor quality of these launch consoles, just sit back and wait.... no one is actually forcing you to go out and buy them.

True, the only interesting thing I've seen lately were the Oculus Rift 3d glasses thingy, I reckon that'll be the next best thing in gaming. I'd love to try that one time, it looks amazing and a completely different gaming experience.

What do you supply?

Big difference between computer components and consumer electrical devices...

Don't people realise launch games are pretty much always amongst the worst games of a consoles lifespan? You're not buying a PS4 to play the games that come with it, you're investing because over the next few years there will be far superior ones that properly utilise the consoles. Launch games don't need to be particularly good to sell a shit ton of copies, people buy games they would never normally buy because they're the only ones available.Imagine the number of people buying Knack who wouldn't go near it if it came out in a years time! There is very little reason to buy either console at the moment, other than because they are new and shiny.

Worrying amazon reviews. I'd definitely consider cancelling my order had I pre-ordered.
